X-Com 2 - Announced

Performance is not great tbh. a little bit juddery in some scenes, may have to lower graphics to high.
Any tips for improving performance?

I wouldn't have a clue since I can get above 30fps on high in game (since the cut scenes are locked to 30fps max) and can hit 60fps in game on medium settings, and that's with a dual core celeron and a 1050Ti.

The only performance issues I have are hard drive related as I'm currently stuck with a 5400RPM laptop grade hard drive which is the only thing that tanks the frame rates when it's grinding away.

I'm sticking with vanilla X-Com 2 for the moment until I get the difficulty settings up a bit higher then rookie, although I did manage a very difficult avatar project facility mission with only 5 of my better troops (in a 6 person squad) being lightly injured (it wasn't actually that good since I had a council mission straight after which meant taking out some of the B team) which was better then I'd managed previously with two missions where I ended up with everyone being out for weeks and I was left with barely anyone available to actually make up a full squad (I actually recorded those two complete messes called missions thanks to the fact that I now have OBS studio set up to record without having much of an impact on gameplay).

And if anyone got an error message relating to mods and had no mods listed on the pre-start splash screen, then do a data integrity check on the game files and close and start up steam which should fix it (you will have to re-select the mods on the pre-start splash screen before starting the game properly).

For anyone starting a LW2 campaign, here's a few tips so you don't make the initial mistakes I did:

- Don't get over exited when you're allowed 8 soldiers on the first mission and repeat this for your second mission. 6 is plenty and you'll need those other starting soldiers real soon.

- Mix Squadies and Rookies when selecting your squad for you second mission. You don't want to be left with all Rookies in your soldier pool.

- Don't deploy a squad on a mission where the Mission Expiry time is less than the time needed to Infilltrate. What will happen is that when the Mission expires, you'll suddenly find yourself in combat against heavy resistance. 3-4 pods each with 4-5 enemies. Not fun when you have basic assault rifles against Advanced Troopers and Advent MECs,

Mother of god Long War 2 is a masterpiece - completely insanely hard, but if you like games that are going to engage your brain instead of click bait/click and bore etc then its for you - with the mod (as long as you don't mind difficult games), its probably the best turn based strategy ever created.

It's insanely hard if you insist that every single encounter must be taken on and completed perfectly, and unfortunately most games tend to train us that way. But yes, it's even better than Long War 1.

Can't wait to see what they do with their own game.

Mac OS gamers should be aware that the LW2 mod isn't Mac OS/Linux compatible yet, but it's being worked on.

It'll run (with a few UI glitches), but will crash to desktop on completion of the first "Gatecrasher" mission.

I picked this up a couple of days ago. I'm having fun, but I massively underestimated how difficult it is :O

I watched my mate play xcom1 a while ago, and it looked really easy lol.

I've got a lot to learn I think.

XCOM 1 is a lot easier than 2 I think. 2 requires different tactics (more ambushes) and resource management.
Hard to decide which one I like more though as they are both great games.

I subscribe to the Humble Monthly Bundle so XCOM 2 is about to drop in a few days time. I havent played an Xcom game for god knows how many years. What I want to know is.....is it best to play vanilla for a while or will it matter if I go straight into Long War 2. Any advantages to going in cold as I will have to just learn everything rather than unlearn and re-learn....If you get my drift.

What ever happens I am looking forward to it and so is my lad as he already has XCOM 2 and is installing LW2 this weekend.

:D

There are new things to learn. I wouldn't want to spoil anything though.
I'd play vanilla first, then add mods so you can see where it needs amending.

Long War 2 levels needs work IMO

Had 2 extract missions in a row where the level was bugged and the only way to get in and out to the floor with the cell holding the prisoner was a skylight. There's was no way to win.

I think Long War 1 had about 14 releases before they were done with it, and it needed them. Holding off for a bit myself cos of some weird issues I've come across.

That's why you "make doors" with explosives (it actually teaches it in the gatecrasher mission).

I can finish blacksite missions inside 6 turns with a "hard and fast" routine (once the first exo-suits are available at least). Large holes blown and all enemies basically bum-rushed, grenade spam to weaken+expose them and a sniper at the back mopping up. Everyone with a rocket on the suit, plenty of extra grenades and flashbangs.

Still miss my first play-through though, made my character pool from friends/etc, brother-in-law ended up a sniper and could flatten 7 aliens a turn with a little wind behind him
