X-Com 2 - Announced

Didn't happen in the old games? I have fired at an alien from the Skyranger at the start - only to miss and it to turn around and reaction fire a stun launcher and end the mission right there :p

Accidents did happen, yes. But there were two crucial differences:

1) You could disarm a soldier who had previously paniced, or had low morale. You cannot disarm your soldiers in EU. (You could also shoot them if the situation required it).

2) Friendly fire in original was purely accidental. In EU, paniced units actively target their allies. If EU was simulating "random fire hitting allies" then the chances to hit would be drastically lowered. But friendly fire shots rarely miss. Normally your units are positioned close and may be flanking each other. This gives them massive bonuses to hit each other during friendly fire.

This. rookie recruit panics, throws grenade on own team. Classic X-Com.

You're remembering wrong. Paniced units never, ever threw grenades. They could fire a /loaded/ weapon, or drop their weapons (including primed grenades). A dropped, primed grenade could explode at the /end/ of the turn.

Again, you could mitigate. I /always/ unloaded ammo from blaster launchers at the start of a mission. Then they couldn't reaction fire or panic fire them. Same with rookies at the back of the Skyranger. Unload their weapons so they don't try reaction firing through their allies.

NONE OF THIS is possible in EU. You cannot mitigate. You cannot do sensible things to reduce the dependence on the RNG. The RNG is KING in EU!

I'm looking forward to this sooo much!

I very rarely pre-order, and never buy DLC up front, so is it wrong that I'm very tempted to pre-order the digital deluxe?

EU made me rage after my best team got wiped several times out in a silly chain reaction. I uninstalled after that.

Watching this with interest, though.

Dropping the primed grenades must have what I was recalling, from the old game. It was a long time ago, and my memory is hazy at the best of times.

I am glad they have put in a character maker in the game now let u make ur own pool of soldiers I always spend time making my own. ;)

This and the enormous amount of character and weapon customisation are huge improvements over EU/EW.

Starting in Concealment and not having to worry about activating patrolling enemies on your first turn is going to totally change the way I play this.

I feel like installing XCOM EW while waiting for this

If you haven't played it yet, beat yourself against the wall that is the "long war" mod :D

DO play it on the suggested difficulty first (I'd even almost suggest "cinematic mode" option from "second wave" settings - your guys are REALLY not accurate to start with). It starts out feeling something like the highest difficulty setting in EW with LOTS of changes, more weapon tiers (rather than "mmm... I'll wait for plasma") and is vastly more tactical (e.g explosives only do full damage in the middle of the blast circle and damage drops off towards the edges).

I've finally got a long war game into the early-mid stages after about 4 failed restarts. It's a MUCH bigger... expansion than EW was over EU. You end up throwing rookies in for ages and accepting it's something of a meat grinder for them. You're then MUCH more attached to the guys that live to see ranks on them.

X-Com 2 customisation should be pretty awesome. I tend to re-name my troops after friends (Long war had an option to tune the countries soldiers come from so it made sure I could have more swedes and greeks as I got friends there/etc - I think x-com 2 lets you change the nationalities anyway) so a few options to give them a more personal look could help that immensely :)

I just seen a couple of vids on youtube made by Beaglerush/ChristopherOdd/TB, and I want 5th of Feb to be tomorrow... . Judging by how strong XCOM combos are from the start I can imagine how powerfull aliens must be at the end of the game. I always wanted sort of sharpshooter/soldier with strong pistols...and it seems it will happen this time, lots of fantastic skills and weapon upgrades for pistols...and that incendiary ammo, this all looks really really good.

As XCom 2 starts with the premise that you failed in the first game, I've been playing a Long War game on Ironman to lead up to release date.

It's actually great fun, I'm holding my own about 6 months in, but because I've had to retreat from a few terror missions I'm gradually losing countries and my funding is suffering. Currently selling elerium and meld to compensate, which I know is going to start hurting in a few months.

I did. :) To be fair I don't find it that hard at the moment but I'm only 3 or 4 missions in. So far no casualties and only 2 injuries. Shot down my 1st UFO on Sunday night so looking forward to that mission tonight. I equip most of my soldiers with laser sights for better accuracy and the alien amulet to lower the chance they panic.
