X1800xt - How on earth to overclock?

i finally hit 10k in 05 by having 712core 792 memory @ 1.425v with fan on 100%.

cant get it any higher though and dont know how much voltage to give it.

any ideas?

I have not been able to make atitool overclock my x1900. Anything above 600 core and it goes crazy. Thats with 1.45vgpu + services disabled aswell.

CCC works fine upto 690/800.

3dmark 06 went up from 4,870 stock to 5,470 which on a single core cpu is quite good.

I dont think ATI CCC is actually overclocking your gpu that much, try your highest overclock with ATI tool and test it against the ATI CCC and your highest ATI tool one, I reckon the ATI Tool one should work.

I finally worked out how to use ATI tool and the problems with it.

Use ATI Tool to overclock etc use profiles and save fan settings/volts to certain profiles.

When in 2d mode and you want to watch a video or something load the default profile as any other profile will just crash the computer, I think theres a dispute going on between the 2d and 3d clocks as I think ati tool overclocks both and 2d should be left well alone, as any change to 2d seems to make your pc crash under videos.

Again I feel the need to chime-in and agree with Vegeta. Catalyst Control Centre Overdrive is a worthless piece of crap, and I think it's most definitely lying about the clock speeds it sets. This is an issue I am beginning to grow rather passionate about now.

The only other explaination I can think of is that Overdrive, being the child of ATi themselves, is more suited to clocking these cores than ATi Tool (which is still a beta version we're using), but that wouldn't explain why 3D Mark scores are higher with ATi Tool at lower frequencies at all.

I've set ati tool to start when windows does and load the default setting - this allows me to use windows without crashing, once gaming I set my gaming profile up, this has higher clocks/fan speed and volts.
When coming back to windows I tap the predefined key for another profile of mine called stock, this is the same as default however on default it doesnt allow you to set fan speed/volts so if you go from a gaming profile to jsut default, the fan speed and volts will remain but the frequences will be default speeds.

The predefined keys I used are SHIFT then F6/F7/F8, this way I dont accidently tap one when in game and crahs my pc.

What are the default clocks for the X1800XT? The spec shows it as 625/750, but ATI Tool reads mine as 600/700...

Also what are the X1800XTPE clocks?

ATi Tool will always show 600/700MHz as the default clocks because you need to use 2D mode all the time to overclock with it. Make sure you don't forget to set your voltages back up too (1.3v/2.08v/2.08v from memory, but I could be off on the last two.)

Ahha, so at the moment, my card is running under-clocked! Cheers:)

Gonna have a play with it later when I get back from the garage, see if I can break 11k at 05 with it.

My voltages are set to 1.275/2.097/2.097...

Well I have 1X512 Geil Ultra cas2 and 1X512 corsair xms c2pt, if I try going over 245fsb no matter what divider i'm on the screen doesnt come on.
So I took two ram modules from my little brothers pc, 2X256 geil ultra cas2 ram, I ran that and that allows me to goto any FSB my cpu is capabale of.
So basically I need either a geil ultra dimm or a corsair xms c2pt dimm so the ram is matching.

ahhh i see. Strange problem there though  .

1gb sets crop up in the MM for 50 quid quite regularly if you cant get a 512mb stick.

You didnt flash it correctly then, did it come up with an error message then say press something to continue? If so it didnt do anything.

Nope, I flashed it right...

atiflash -p -f 0 newbios.bin

All went through ok with no errors, just didn't change the default speeds... I'll try it again later:)

Just a quick note on ATI Tool, although its great for setting clock speeds and volts the artifact scanning isnt 100% reliable, my pc crashes under that at high frequencies within seconds, but I can play anygame for hours on end and its fines so it still has issues with x1800 cards.
