There will always be "chasing the dragon" computing, clothing, hifi, home cinema, cars, watches/jewellery, bikes and motorbikes, rowing boats to super yachts.

Just because a £700 9800X3D CPU exists doesn't mean you have to buy it. I certainly wouldn't spend that much no matter how fast it is or how many cores it has.

I think the OP has misunderstood the concept of buying a product which will last a greater number of years while still providing excellent performance. Many people like myself will only update the CPU every 3-4 years, sometimes longer. It's a false economy to buy a cheaper processor for now, to have to buy another is a year or so to keep up with newer requirements.

its almost like there is more than one use case for computers , and its almost like all these different use cases might have different requirements from the hardware involved.
and its almost like someone who does a lot of abc thing that requires more than average amounts of d,e,f system resource might then benefit from these companies
making different products for the said different use cases................................
its almost like the manufacturers have noticed this and then somehow as if by magic accidentally made a range of products which vaguely/generally
cover these slightly differing use cases and budgets.
next you'll be telling me there's more than one make and model graphics card or something utterly unbelievable

Buying overpriced products is the way to become rich

The market decides the price. Too expensive for you might be reasonable to me. Don't like it? Don't buy it! Freedom of choice is a wonderful thing

I can afford a 9800x3d

Or if someone gave me £600, I still wouldn't buy one.

Bought a 7700 Ryzen 7. That'll do for a while. I've gone past point of really expensive pc parts

Well exactly. You could however choose to shout at clouds about it :p Back in the day, CPU and GPUs were old hat in 6-12 months. Not just replaced but outclassed. Stuff like Hardware T&L would come along and make you shiny new toy useless
