x870e asrock phantom nova

Planning to get this for my 9800x3d build coming up. Any thing to keep in mind/remember when building? The reports of asrock boards and 9800x3d chips dying have me a bit concerned, but i assume most of that is fixed now? I plan to update to the latest bios as soon as i get the board.

I setup a Nova and 9800x3d yesterday and it was quite straightforward.

A few things to consider.

There is a lot of plastic wrap on the front and back that needs removing. I also found the USB3 header to be quite awkward to get the cable in and had a minor panic with a couple of bent pins. In the end I plugged it in before mounting the board.

My cooler uses different mounts that block the cpu lever so had to install the cpu first, so worth checking before you start.

I booted up with the installed bios v3.15 and Windows sorted itself out. I had to install the chipset drivers twice to pick up all the drivers and the wlan and Bluetooth drivers were installed by the asrock tool.

With a 5080 newly installed on Tuesday, I've had 3 or 4 occasions where screen has gone blank - nothing serious as a quickly cycle of inputs on the monitor sorts it. Hasn't happened when gaming, only when on desktop.

I've just updated to bios 3.20 to see if that stops it. Already installed latest nVidia drivers yesterday, which didn't solve the issue.

I've also read elsewhere that setting PCIE to 4.0 in bios might help but wasn't sure of the setting / menu I need to navigate to.

Anyone had similar or can give some advice?

I running a 9070XT and not experienced this. I did update bios to 3.20 straight away though.

Hopefully the new bios sorts it for you.

Unfortunately not - just played Wreckfest 2 for over an hour, no issues (never happened in gaming yet), but not long after browsing / Discord / etc it happened again. Everything is updated to latest, checked connections, changed settings on monitor just in case - no help so far... :-/

I see you have two PCs listed in your signature? Maybe swap GPU and see if you still have an issue?

It was a straight swap of the GPU - no issue with the 3080Ti previously.

I have a VR headset and separate USB screen connected at all times - I assume something is conflicting and driver update may eventually solve

This 'black screen' isn't as problematic as those reported by others - i.e. PC doesn't crash, doesn't happen in games, can be resolved by re-selecting DP input on monitor, etc.

Have you reinstalled the Chipset drivers, i had to install them a couple of times to clear "unknown devices"?

Also, is the igpu disabled?

Thanks for the suggestion. I did update to latest yesterday in fact - that cleared 1no. unknown device for me too.

I've had the PC on all day today and no issues - so fingers crossed. If it does happen again, I will try and narrow it down by disconnecting VR / USB screen and see if that helps.

Edit: I haven't disabled igpu - will do that also :)

I am just starting the build around this motherboard and have run in to first hurdle. This being that the Crucial T705 With Heatsink will seemingly not fit without me removing the lower thermal pad from the motherboard. As otherwise it seems I would need to exert a lot of pressure to be able to get the end of the ssd low enough to rotate the retention clip. Should it be ok to go with no lower thermal pad. Or is it best to try and get one of the thinner Thermal Grizzly pads. This ssd is listed as compatible on Crucial's website and the 4tb version is on the QVL on Asrock's website.
Hi what solution do you use in the end in getting this SSD installed as i have the 4TB T705 with Heatsink and X870E Nova MB aswell ?

Lots of talk about "CPU VDDCR_SOC Voltage (SVI3 TFN)" on reddit. I've got a Taichi Lite but its mostly Asrock boards which are effected. I'm talking about CPUs dying using the default settings asrock has in its bios.

I think this has solved the spiky nature of cpu v soc for me. I'm hoping this is a fix for the dying CPUs. I've just got expo enabled atm; this fix (to enable soc overclock mode) and set a static voltage of 1.1v for v soc; also set its corresponding load line calibration level to 2.

Hey all, could do with some help. Just updated to bios 3.25 that came out today.

Problem is my memory won't run at 6000mhz expo setting anymore. if I select that it saves reboots but still runs at 4800. If I select the 5600 expo it saves didn't hard reboot like above and runs at 5600.

I could revert to 3.20 but was hoping this had some fixes that potentially fixed the dying chips. I even tried manually entering the expo settings but it had the same behavior so am guessing maybe the memory is unstable at these settings in the new bios despite running fine for 3 months on old bios. I am also wondering if I am not entering the settings correctly for the manual settings as it's not clear how to do this.

Memory kit is.

Ok very odd, after much messing I have it back at 6000Mhz. Expo profile sets VDDIO to 1.35v I lower this to 1.25v and it boots fine. Does this make sense to anyone ? I will post in memory section later with a breakdown of values etc as I suspect I could do with some help setting these to better values.

Could be a really strange coincidence but since I got this board and charge my Iphone 16 Pro Max via USB-C on the board or via PC case my power supply makes an awful noise around the PSU fan area (NZXT C1500W PSU which isn't a month old) and PSU fan goes crazy. I can't replicate it with any other device. I've ordered another PSU in the interim, anyone else had any similar issues? So strange!

EDIT: Asus 1200W ATX 3.1 PSU arrived today and from limited testing can't replicate it so will have to RMA the NZXT PSU.

Funny just had the same thing on a new build using this board and the same PSU, not plugged an iPhone in though just usual USB devices like kb + mouse. Noise is from the fan constantly spinning up and stopping, if I take it out of hybrid mode the noise goes away.

C1500 was fine in previous build with a MSI board.

Will test it with another PSU to see if that behaves and doesn't do the same.

I upgraded my bios yesterday and no issues with Expo settings to 6000Mhz using the standard profile with my Corsair Vengeance RAM.

Got the Asrock Nova delivered today along with a 9800x3d and 64gb or corsair dominator - awaiting another m2 drive before I go for the build. I assume first things first and update the bios? All of these power damaged cpu's/boards was seriously making me reconsider this board

Video uploaded on 18 June 2025. PBO2 settings using Precision Boost Overdive with Curve Optimizer and Curve Shaper, which will be applied to an ASRock Motherboard X870E Nova WiFi. Though is not a solution but is more of a prevention on toasting the 9800X3D on a ASRock Nova X870E.
