How hot does the rad itself feel?

Might just be a better option to whack another rad in there, assuming you can squeeze one in of course.

Hi,
The rad feels hot yes... very hot.. I don't really want to spend any more money and anyway there isnt any more room... the only way i could have a larger rad is to get one mounted on the outside...

I have ordered 2 9500rpm 40x40x28mm fans that are at ~ 40db and move 15cfm which is a lot for a 40mm fan... It seems that a quiet and cool xbox plan has failed...

Also it is worth mentioning that this is the older xbox which has the 90nm chips not 45nm as the latest has... which doesnt help...

Seems that it gets far too hot though ... i mean i have a 2x40mm radiator with push pull fans on?!? And it gets 2 red rings after 30 minutes on the dashboard?!?! Something must be wrong??

A well known watercooling shop sell a kit with this radiator and only 2 of the fans that i have with it rather than 4 which i am using at the moment!?!

What's more likely? That they are wrong or my system isnt working properly?

Given that the rad etc are all very hot, then it would seem that you have fitted everything properly, so I think that can be ruled out.

It just sounds like that little rad is not enough to tame the 90nm chips.

Did you happen to email the shop and ask where/how they recommend installing the rads in case thats got something to do with it?

I'm assuming the fans are pulling in cool air from the outside? Might help but perhaps stick some small heatsinks on the waterblock?

Other then that, only other suggestion I can think of is a bigger radiator :(

Looking quickly around the web it would seem that most people using that rad are using very high speed fans. Go to YouTube and search xboxexpert and you will see what I mean.

What kind of heatsinks? You mean ramsinks??

Could you make 60mm fans fit with adapters? would give you the option of greater airflow through the rad wouldn't it - just not sure if there'd be enough room in there

I think that you may have the answer there... They would go on the outside... However, I couldnt just wack on 2 adapters as they would hit each other... it would have to be a 2x40mm to 2x60mm adapter which i would have to make myself :O I dont think i would be able to do that!
Any ideas?

Well I have ordered 2 9500rpm 15cfm fans now but 40db is a lot! :O
I would be easiest just putting a bigger rad in there but I can't keep using the college's laser cutter to recut panels for different grills... Its going to get embaressing!!

Ok... So I am considering buying a 50mm thick 80mm radiator that is mounted on the outside of the acrylic with holes cut to allow the ports in... The fan would be on the inside...

I would get another panel laser cut...

Good idea??

Just a thought, are you certain the problem you are having is heat related? I am fairly sure the E74 error is more likely to be the Hama chip (is that the right spelling?) to the rear left of the GPU.

How have you attached the waterblock, are you using the original X-Clamps?

Had another thought, could you move the pump to near the bottom of the 360 and position the little rad at the rear where the standard fans go? That way, rather than buying a different rad altogether, what you could do is get another of those little rads and attach it on the outside rear, a little like a rad-fan-rad sandwich :)

I don't think it is the E74 error i just get 2 rings... And I am certain it is heat related... it gets ridiculously hot!!
The Hama chip has a ramsink on it so I don't think that is a problem...
I am using good old fasioned screws not the dodgy x-clamps :p

Well I don't think that linked one will be small enough but it may be worth a try!! Would several ram sinks make any difference??

Problem with that is that the little rad hasnt got threaded fittings so I couldnt use any fancy 90 degree fittings or anything...It means cutting into the plastic case but you may be on to something there!! Ill take some close consideration to that...

One thing i am slightly concerned about at the moment is that my pump may be unhealthy!! :O Thing is it is not a conistant sound... Anybody else with the DDC hear any variation (only small) in the sound, as in it is whirring a bit..
Also it just doesnt seem that quiet... (the pump i mean).. Could have been damaged by temperature...
Or... COULD IT BE THAT THE LOOP IS TOO SMALL FOR IT???

Do you have room to add a second one of the current rads in there somewhere? That would double the cooling surface wouldn't it?
Also, as I think was suggested before, how about a proper reservoir, surely the more water you have the cooler it will be?
(Admittedly a lot, if not all, of the above is guesswork)

Obviously a bigger rad would be better but you've done such a nice job to the case it would be disappointing if you had to have a rad on the outside.

Hope you manage to get it sorted as I've enjoyed seeing what you've done so far.

Well, There isnt any more space... It took hours to fit this in as it was!!

Well that will only keep the temperature down for so long, when the water reaches equalibrium it will make no difference, it is more important to have an effective / sufficient cooling system?

Unfortunately, so is having a very loud xbox?

I have ordered some ramsinks which look pretty good to put on the rad to try to disapate more heat... that coupled with the 2 fans i am getting tomorrow should do a good job.

There are 8 of each below...

Also... Does it make any difference that the rad gets much hotter at the end than in the middle??

Edit: I am planning on getting some final pictures done before the weekend coming (15-16th Jan)

I just realised i have only put in about 1/8th of a litre!! And more worrying i put 2 drops of pt nuke :O

Considering its meant to be 1 - 2 drops per litre ... i have put in at least 8 times too much :O

filling was a pain so would it be worth using a pipet and replace loads of liquid to dilute it? or should i not worry??

What sort of sound does the pump make? Could be vibrations from the case. If it's the pump itself, then maybe there are trapped bubbles within the pump?

If the little heatsinks work, I think you should paint them red/black ;)
