**XBOX ONE** Official Thread

The problem is prices will not drop if games are online only. They will stick at RRP and that's that.

Want a 5 year old game? That will be £49.99.

I highly doubt that's what MS were aiming for. I'm 99% sure they were aiming for a Steam-like model where prices drop gradually over time, with sales every now and then. If they didn't do that, they would lose the console war in a heartbeat.

This would actually make me consider a XBox 180.
Can't say I disagree with any of that. Perhaps that's what MS will aim for in time. I mean let's not forget, E3 was pretty much only a week ago and a lot has changed since then. Give them a few months and who knows where we'll stand when Gamescom and TGS come around.

Agree.

Steam-like for a console is the way forward. Some people can't see that. Does my head in.
I have used Steam i the past and its so much cheaper and better.

This wouldn't happen though as things stand. You can't do that because the devs don't make any money ion you selling it.

I'm not defending MS are their stupid logic but this is how they see it. Plus a have a few PC gamers who have explained a few things to me.
Why does DRM lead to lower prices when one of its main cornerstones its to increase the density of profit?

I just used your logic of making up numbers, so dont see why my option is wrong compared t yours

Do the prices of old games drop on Live then? because what I've heard is that many of the games on there are still the same price as release with very few getting price drops even a year on.

At the moment the Dev gets barely any profit. With DRM they would get more profit as their packaging cost would not exist. People forget that if you buy a disc you company has to buy the packaging, shipping and all the advertising in each individual company. That is a huge cost.

Get rid of packaging, shipping and they will make more money. They will then start to lower prices like the PC games.
Look at the music industry for example. Online the music is cheaper than going to the shops.
Below is an example

Can't be bothered no more trying to explain this to people. Like I said MS had a good idea by copying someone (not for the first time) but I guess people don't like change.

And what makes you think Microsoft are going to do the same? They'll wring every last penny out of you.

When PC games came out 10 - 15 years ago. What were the prices? I'm pretty sure they were about £35-£40. Im pretty sure that PS2 games were about £40-£45 at the same time.

LOL! No.

PC games are much more expensive now than they used to be. I used to pick up big name games for £17.99 on release for most games. £24.99 was considered top end pricing.

It's only over the last few years that PC games have started coming into line with console game prices.

So now you are saying that DRM will only mean cheaper pries once we fully go digital download only? When did you expect this to happen and what was going to happen in the meantime with pricing? Perhaps rather than use Steam as a DRM model we could have a look at existing console DRM models, namely XBL and PSN stores, that at least seems far more common sense to.

EDIT: Why is Now 73 so much more expensive? Its not even a new title? But DRM means it should be cheaper right? Less packing and whatnot as you advised

Well thats how much I use to get them at. Cant go and get every shops price.

Fair enough. I still believe that if it were then the prices would drop

I would also be all for a steam-like drm model. I just can't see it. We just have to look at the price of games bought online are now.

I know it would differ with the new gen but steam have to be cheap because of the multiple ways and places you can buy games. Microsoft would have the monopoly (at least for their own console) so I doubt the prices would be that reasonable. Of course they would lose the console war if their prices remained high but it would require common sense to lower prices, I'm not sure Microsoft possess this. :p

This would be absolutely perfect.

inb4 MS just re implement all the features/limitations they have backpedaled on a few months down the line after release and say they are right to in their T&Cs xD

As Kreeeee pointed out, how would they implement both? If you installed the game so you could play without the disc (using online checks) What's then stopping you giving the disc to a mate to play offline at the same time?

I didn't see a reply to this, so sorry if I've duplicated one.

Isn't what you're describing, exactly what you would have been able to do WITH family sharing anyway? If one person is offline, then they wouldn't have access to multiplayer which is identical to the 1 other person playing the same game as you as part of your XB1 "family". At the *very* worst, one extra person in your family would be able to play offline at the same time, hardly the end of the world when another 8-9 people also had potential access within your family.
