**XBOX ONE** Official Thread

I will get one, before I get a PS4 as well but I'm in the same boat. I mainly game on PC and can't justify paying £450+ for something that may not get too much use. Fingers crossed for some good deals in January but I'm not getting my hopes up.
I think you're looking at closer to Easter if you're after any deals tbh, and even then it might still be too close to release. I don't expect either Sony or MS to drop the price of the consoles for at least 6 months.

You also have to bare stock in mind as well.

Day One Pre-Orders are sold out in many places, but Microsoft has said that they believe it won't be as hectic as past launches and you should be able to go into a shop on launch day and pick one up.

Given that the launch had to be scaled back in other countries because of a shortage of hardware, I would expect we will see it pretty much exhausted after the launch, with a trickle of new machines coming in. Stocks will then be ramped up for Xmas, as two brand new consoles by Sony and Microsoft will be the hottest Xmas presents this year. Given the number they will shift during that period, its highly unlikely there will be much stock to even discount in January anyway.

Well Microsoft's official stance for scaling the launch back in certain countries is because the software isn't ready for it, not that there's a shortage of hardware. If that is indeed the case then it means that there'll be more stock to distribute in those regions that the software supposedly is ready for.

Of course that's Microsoft's stance. I wouldn't be surprised if it really was because of manufacturing and stock limits :)

Only they know what is really the case. I would think with third party titles though, its down to the publishers of those titles to regionalise titles and get them through any relevant government classification body.

Regardless though, that doesn't change the fact that both the Xbox One and Playstation 4 will be the biggest selling items this Christmas, which is going to strain there being much in the way of stock in January.

It's to do with the localisation of the Xbox dashboard software (like Kinect voice commands and such), not things like games :)

Some more comments from Albert Penello on the relative performance comparissions of the two consoles.

The PS4 will not have the performance advantage over Xbox One that many people seem to believe. That’s according to Xbox strategy boss Albert Penello, who has taken to NeoGaf to correct what he calls some of the “mis-information” that has been poste don the internet.

Here are his technical points in full:

• 18 CU's vs. 12 CU's =/= 50% more performance. Multi-core processors have inherent inefficiency with more CU's, so it's simply incorrect to say 50% more GPU.

• Adding to that, each of our CU's is running 6% faster. It's not simply a 6% clock speed increase overall.

• We have more memory bandwidth. 176gb/sec is peak on paper for GDDR5. Our peak on paper is 272gb/sec. (68gb/sec DDR3 + 204gb/sec on ESRAM). ESRAM can do read/write cycles simultaneously so I see this number mis-quoted.

• We have at least 10% more CPU. Not only a faster processor, but a better audio chip also offloading CPU cycles.

• We understand GPGPU and its importance very well. Microsoft invented Direct Compute, and have been using GPGPU in a shipping product since 2010 - it's called Kinect.

• Speaking of GPGPU - we have 3X the coherent bandwidth for GPGPU at 30gb/sec which significantly improves our ability for the CPU to efficiently read data generated by the GPU.

“I do want to be super clear: I'm not disparaging Sony,” he added. “I'm not trying to diminish them, or their launch or what they have said. But I do need to draw comparisons since I am trying to explain that the way people are calculating the differences between the two machines isn't completely accurate.

“Hopefully with some of those more specific points people will understand where we have reduced bottlenecks in the system. I'm sure this will get debated endlessly but at least you can see I'm backing up my points.

“I still I believe that we get little credit for the fact that, as a SW company, the people designing our system are some of the smartest graphics engineers around – they understand how to architect and balance a system for graphics performance. Each company has their strengths, and I feel that our strength is overlooked when evaluating both boxes.

“Given this continued belief of a significant gap, we're working with our most senior graphics and silicon engineers to get into more depth on this topic. They will be more credible then I am, and can talk in detail about some of the benchmarking we've done and how we balanced our system.

“I think I've been upfront I have nothing but respect for those guys, but I'm not a fan of the mis-information about our performance."

As above,

Basically, The "XBOX" and "Playstation" consoles of this gen are FAR closer to each other in spec than ever before, Which can only mean
A)
Very good things for cross platform games

B)
Any gap between them in performance will be massively minor

This is a generation of features and software (OS and game exclusives) over hardware imo (excluding controllers that is).

Were never going to know for sure untill both consoles are released how they compare performance wise. As technical as Albert Penello wants to get he still works for Microsoft so you can take what he says with a grain of salt as you would with any Sony person saying the exact opposite.

I guess I'm now too late to order an Xbox One with Forza included? The cost difference between the day one edition and buying them both separately is insane! I hadn't thought pre-orders would have run out more than 2 months before the release date and had been putting off my order until pay day.

I still cant see a reason to buy either next gen what am I missing here ?
All the games are old gen because they have to work on the old gen.

This is like going from 720p to 1080p it's the smallest leap in console technology.

None of the games have to work on the old generation of consoles. Almost all launch games won't be on the old gen consoles. Then there is the fact that the new consoles will be a lot more powerful than the old ones. It will be a big leap, massive compared to the 720p to 1080p idea.

I've missed your relentless negativity :D
