**XBOX ONE** Official Thread

But several third party devs have already gone on record saying that with their games one version will look noticeably better
I don't doubt that at all, I just wonder what the difference will be in real world terms. Slightly reduced resolution on the Xbox One (900p vs 1080p maybe)? A slightly greater draw distance on the PS4? A higher and more stable framerate on the PS4 (though we wouldn't really notice as long as 60FPS is achieved IMO)? Slightly better looking textures or lighting effects? All would be classed as "noticeable", yet all in real world terms would make virtually no difference, if any, to gameplay enjoyment (unless you're a true graphics nut, in which case go and buy a PC :D).

I know we won't know until the games come out, just wondering.

Yeah I don't think there will be any MASSIVE differences, i was just responding to Eliot who thinks there will be none.

It will vary game to game, some will probably just be resolution differences, some FPS, and some will probably have slightly different textures or AA. I don't think it will be enough to make one version seem almost like a different game.

I agree, the differences will be fairly minor and nothing worth anyone getting upset about. I think we all agree that the real power of both consoles will be seen in the console exclusives that come out 18 months to 2 years down the line, when the developers have had a proper chance to get used to the systems and what they can do.

Graphics really aren't the be all and end all some people (on both sides) are making them out to be. I still look at games like Gears of War and think they look awesome, and both next gen consoles are capable of blowing that away, both in terms of looks and in terms of size and scope. I really am very excited about what the next gen will bring us over the next few years as developers push the systems hard.

Personally, Graphics have reached a level now where i dont particularly care that much.
Hence why my purchase decison this gen was made purley on controller and exclusives

I dont know what it is, but i dont see the changes from this gen to next gen being anything overly dramatic. From the footage i've seen theres only a couple of games which look next gen to me Infamous Second Son springs to mind. I just hope im wrong and there is a leap in quality in most games.

I'm not so sure tbh. Halo 3 was fantastic. I felt 4 lacked the presence of the Bungie efforts. For me not having the familiar score was a let down. The Halo music was some of the best ever done and it really lifted the game. The end of Halo 3 when you are driving the Warthog and the Halo theme is pumping out is one of my all time gaming greats. I felt 4 lacked anything like that.

But with new hardware I'm hoping they can pull of another fabulous Halo like 2.

Am I seriously the only weirdo who doesn't like the Halo series? A lot of my friends started playing Halo 4 when it came out and I had never played any of the games so I bought all of them but about half way through Halo: Combat Evolved I just wasn't enjoying it anymore, I felt like I was having to force myself to play it I found it boring.

I loved the first Halo on PC, but for the online not the single player. Never played any of the others

You're not the only one. Halo MP in a private match with some friends I can handle. Halo MP with randoms or Halo campaign - someone please shoot me  That being said, Halo 3 sticky grenades are one of the greatest things in the (made up) world!

I also dont like the Halo series i just found it strange. That said the best part of it for me is the multiplayer campaign, easy gamerscore too ;)

Neogaf ripped him apart over his so called tech specs. Just go over there and have a look for your self.

Just wait until the digital foundry comparisons.

Hows about

Xbox One GPU:

768 GCN shader cores with 853MHz
48 TMUs
16 ROPs
1.31 TFLOPS
40.9 GTex/s
13.6 GPix/s
8GB DDR3 with 68GB/s + eSRAM voodoo
2 compute command processors
something between 2 and 16 parallel compute queues
GPU cache bypass: no

PS4 GPU:

1152 GCN shader cores with 800MHz ( GPU not confirmed, could also be more )
72 TMUs
32 ROPs
1.84 TFLOPS
57.6 GTex/s
25.6 GPix/s
8GB GDDR5 with 176GB/s
8 compute command processors
64 parallel compute queues
GPU cache bypass: yes
I suppose the thing is these sort of lists just concentrate on the pure GPU/Memory specs again that we've already gone over and always seem to magically leave out some of the other stuff like the HAS bandwidgth (30GB/s X1 vs "almost" 20GB/s PS4), CPU speeds, Sound and other support processors etc.

Whilst I'm not saying the PS4 isn't more powerful just repeating the same basic GPU specs really doesn't help. Putting dual ATI 7970s into an underclocked CPU using ropey drivers and a pants motherboard chipset produces very different results to putting it into an overclocked CPU with optimised drivers/API (lets face it DX11.2 is written by MS and they have some time and experience with it, if anyone can produce an optimised API/framework for the hardware DirectX is likely to be it), support chipsets etc. There's more to performance than individual parts, it needs a well balanced system

It's the all up real world results that are of interest I think. Whilst I think Albert post was pants for detail I do have some sympathy with his view that just looking at DDR5 and the GPU is not the whole story. Sonys refusal to comment on CPU speed concerns me a little as well, not least because they seem to shout about everything else.. I'm going for 1.6Ghz with a side bet that due to heat from the integral PSU and bigger GPU it may even be clocked a little lower.

Depends if you address the two memory stores in serial or parallel over separate buses (I'm not suggesting that's what they are doing btw).

I would love it if that's what they have done, all these "you can't just add them up" crap posts can stop then.

I wish they would stop now to be honest, no-one knows if that's what they are doing or not, yet people jump on him as just a PR person.

Tired of all this "spec" and speed **** to be honest. Both consoles are going to give us great games.

Several? All I'd heard is (i think) something like "need for speed" although i could be wrong. Which were the other games & devs?

I think some people just want to make sure they're getting the most bang for their buck, so want the more powerful console. Personally, I want the console with the best games. For me and my preferences, that's currently the Xbox One.
This - times a million wrapped up with a bow, in a bucket with two eggs... :D
