**XBOX ONE** Official Thread

Still don't really know what Sunset Overdrive is but my god I want to see more of it!

A Microsoft spokesperson issued Eurogamer the following statement, telling gamers: "Will not target ads to you based on any data Kinect collects unless you choose to allow us to do so."

Why is Kinect collecting data in the first place?!

While I don't want to be accused of defending MS again, I fail to see the need for the "lol "

Surely MS making it perfectly clear that no information about you is transmitted without your express permission is a good thing. Am I missing something?

MS could easily clear up all the confusion surrounding what Kinect does and how explicit you have to be in what gets sent/transmitted. All they have to do is show someone setting up the Xbox One for the first time, showing them going through the menus and various options. This will show just how explicit you have to be (or not) in order for the console to transmit any data to MS.

I think people are worried that it's collecting this data in the first place, regardless of what the data is used for.

It seems likely there will be an option to 'Opt out' of sending data to Microsoft, but as usual things still aren't clear due to conflicting messages from Microsoft. That Albert Penello guy was saying one thing on Neogaf, while another Microsoft employee was telling journalists something completely different at the same time somewhere else. :o

I don't think there will be an "Opt Out" option, but rather an "Opt In" option. MS have stated on several occasions that you have to give your explicit consent to send your data to MS, which suggests that it's something you have to activate yourself, rather than something which is already ticked and you have to remember to change. That's how I imagine it will work, but that is of course merely guesswork on my part for now.

No idea! I thought the X1 wasn't get any ads on the dashboard if you paid for gold
Not sure when that was a case but right now the information seems to state whether the user has the opportunity to have normal ads or targetted ads - and also the quality/type of those ads (NuAds are the ones that use Kinect for additional interactivity).

Only concession I know is that the main Home screen wont have ads but media recommendations, but all the other screens will. Whether thats gaming-related or not I guess is up to MS and what advertisers they can court...

The XO and Kinect have some very interesting benefits for advertisers to exploit, what MS allow regards personal data (which may include biometrics) seems to be the hot topic for discussion, obviously the whole NSA stuff from a few months back doesnt help...

ps3ud0

I have no problem with targeted ads, if they can recommend me stuff (new music/films whatever) that I would like but didn't know about then that's fine by me.

I wonder how many people who are up in arms about targeted ads from MS feel about the "Hey we saw you looked at x product, how about Y product" when they browse Amazon.

I don't give two ***** about it to be honest, the 360 does it at the moment with tiles for games I might like because I have played X game.

I'd rather try the One controller myself before being all doom and gloom and criticising MS for not making the old controller b/c.

TBH I've seen more positive hands-on reports than negative, most seem to say it's an improvement on an already class-leading design. Personally looking forward to the rumble triggers and Kinect tracking.

I'm of the same mind tbh, will wait until I have a chance to handle one myself before getting all doom and gloom abou tit.

I'm the same. In fact, I'm that used to where they are on the 360 dashboard, I actually don't look at them any more.

I'm hopeful that with Kinect I actually won't even have to look at the home screens unless I choose to. I have this vision in my head of how it will work...

Come home from work. Open living room door, say "Xbox On". Let cats out, go upstairs to get changed, come back down and say "Xbox play Dead Rising 3". Get comfy on the couch, turn TV on, pick up the controller and find DR3 already loaded and waiting for me.

That'll do me nicely :D

That does indeed sound good. What I can imagine happening based on my kinect 1 experience would be (scottish accent did not work well)

Open living room door - say xbox on - say xbox on. - shout XBOX ON - put on american accent - ex bwax oan - go upstairs to get changed, come back down and say "xbox play dead rising 3", say "xbox play dead rising 3", should "XBOX PLAY DEAD RISING 3" press play game button xbox blade with an exasperated sigh. :p
