**XBOX ONE** Official Thread

With regards to ads I got to say I've never seen the issue with them. Even on my 360 or pretty much anything for that matter I just flat out ignore them. As long as they don't take up majority of the page its fine they just get phased out in my mind.

My guess is people are worried about the Kinect seeing them fap off and so the XO starts pumping p0rn ads on their xbox :p

Two interesting rumors based on statements from Xbox execs seem to have surfaced this week. Firstly that X1 SDK can support keyboard and mouse and MS would be supportive of devs using them for specific games (RTS like Rome Total War/Civilization 5 etc springs to mind). Although not desirable for FPS games where everyone should be using a controller this could be a great move to bring a genre of games to the console that has traditionally been ignored in a meaningful way. I got over excited at the thought it could wean me off expensive PC gaming. I could have a relatively lower power small quiet PC for web/email/work etc and then plug it into the monitor via HDMI in on X1 on the desk allowing me to play games and work on one screen hot swapping between them.

Doesn't take much to get me over excited ;)

Second was a rumour that X1 will allow cross platform play for some games with Windows 8. This interested me for a couple of reasons. Given X1 runs a flavour of W8 it makes sense. If the rumours this week that Windows Phone and RT will merge it opens up the possibility of real cross platform gaming on X1/PC/tablet/Phone. Clearly the game will have to account for hardware but it's an interesting opportunity for an imaginative dev. It would also suggest to me that MS is going to get a lot more serious about games on PC using the Xbox/Live service which makes sense given GFWL is being retired (hurray!). I wonder if that indicates we can expect a substantial X1 update mid life t a variation of Windows 9 (or whatever it ends up being) much like 360 NGE.

All in all mainly speculation but interesting non the less and for me anyway I feel like I'm starting to get a view that MS has bigger plans for X1 than just recycling the same old FPS games but a bit prettier and faster. If all this stuff starts to come together X1 could end up being a genuinely great all round gaming & entertainment device, it just has to not sacrifice the core gaming abilities, which so far seem to be intact

Not something hardcore gamers who just want the most powerful flops dedicated to shooting stuff will be interested in but it's an interesting gamble on picking up a much wider gaming audience outside the traditional 15-30 male market. If the gamble pays off X1 could grab massive market share over the next couple of years although I still expect PS4 to dominate this Christmas as sales will be decided by the afore mentioned hardcore console gamers and pre orders :)

Just my ponderings for the day in no particular order and not particularly well thought through whilst I make my way through the first cuppa of the day :)

Just a note on the price of digital games on the Xbox One when it launches. I took a quick look at prices on the microsoft store and they all seem to be the same price as at other retailers (GAME etc.). So do you guys thinks these will be the prices of digital copies on the Xbox One considering they're from microsofts website.

I think the ads thing only bothers me because I remember the so much faster dashboard that wasn't full of the stuff. Hell I'd pay double for live each year to have a complete ad free version with just a games tab :D

The dashboard now takes a good minute to load on my 360. The NXE dashboard was so much better.
I wouldn't want to pay more gold to get no ads simply because I shouldn't have to pay more! Paying for a service should mean it's ad free.

The dash takes a while for mine to load as well, however, my mates on the same console (I swapped with my mate) at his house on Sky broadband it loaded instantly on boot.

I'm not sure it's anything to do with ads.

Why is Kinect collecting data in the first place?!

So that they can charge more money for advertising based on the fact that they can specifically demonstrate to the advertiser what works and doesn't work via various trends. It also gives them feedback about their advertising campaigns which perhaps they can't get from traditional media outlets.

From what I've read in the Microsoft statement, it will be used to track things like:

- How many people are watching the Ad.
- Whether people are actually watching the Ad, or if they lose attention or go do something else.

So its not something like your Kinect camera thinks you look fat, so you might get targeted with weight loss ads.... Its more useful to the advertiser in knowing that when their car insurance advert came on, everybody left the room, thus its a bit of a failure.

Similarly Microsoft can say to an energy drink manufacturer something like.... Our trends show that 87% watching a soft drink advert with action sports will watch the entire thing.

Takes about 30 seconds for me, but yeah it used to be much faster :(

So what's doing it then, if I disconnect from the net it boots instantly. It's only when it has to load all the guff does the system become slow or as slow as my internet.

I have no idea, he was on SKY broadband (not fibre) I am on BT Infinity.

It truly is a mystery. He went from 120Mb Virgin, which took a minute or two to load, to SKY and it loads the dash instantly, I have seen this with my own eyes too so he is not lying.
