**XBOX ONE** Official Thread

No crushed blacks here either. Set the tv up properly instead of expecting it to look perfect out of the box and enjoy the console. The sharpening level and hdmi blacks both had to be lowered for a more natural picture.

I'll give it a whirl tonight and see if it makes any difference. Granted my TV is 2 years old but at the time it was voted one of the best for gaming and was pretty much top of the range but I have left stuff as "default." Will give it a try :D

Yup. Crushed blacks refers to the grouping of an exposed image to the extreme left side of the histogram. The data is crushed against the left side, reducing detail in shadows to just pure black, which obviously isn't right. Most TVs have dynamic contrast or even balanced contrast settings that usually end up sacrificing the shadow detail for punchier colours. Run the calibrator on the xbox one for HDTV sets and follow the guidelines and you'll avoid it completely.

It's just the usual rubbish story about someone who doesnt know what they are talking about, spouting garbage as if it was gospel.

Wonder what it's like if people run their tv out of game mode? Always thought those extreme setting were too strong, maybe it's something to do with that.

It's a similar affect but would affect just the blacks, so more of a gamma issue. Maybe it's just not playing nice with certain models of TV.

The blacks would be the first to go, being the darkest of the spectrum, that pic posted before seemed to darken everything down not just the black detail on the rocks. As above I wonder if the extreme settings on TVs are causing issues rather than the console. As PC gamers we all know what a badly calibrated monitor can look like, TVs are even worse especially with a sell me bright display setting on.

Btw I have all my sources running through my amp to my tv, apart from my 360 which required totally different settings on my tv to get the picture I wanted. Maybe people need to be more natural when selecting their setups.

Ordered Assassins Creed from Amazon yesterday morning as I am off work today, noticed the 1 month Prime offer for next day delivery so opted for that....and it doesn't arrive lol. Postman just came and went lol.

Useless! Just told them to cancel Prime.

What video do you work with as crushing blacks / clipping whites has been common vernacular in compositing for as long as I've been working with 3D (crushed blacks lose variation in dark areas, clipped whites lose variation in bright areas).

Edit: quoted wrong person

Never heard of the term, and worked for some local TV spots in the past, if its was a "crushed blacks" which sound like a lazy term or completely non specific, it would indicate to me that its gone and removed all details in the black areas, this isni' the case here, the details are still there but the contrast is not making them visable.

You know I think I'm running in game mode. Will post tonight if I can get it looking better.

That makes sense, it probably wouldn't be something you'd want to do for TV productions - James J has put up a much better explanation than me of what's going on.

Did the 360 have crushed blacks, not that it ever bothers me I'm just curious. I'm one of those players that slides the brightness way past the 'adjust brightness until the emblem is barely visible' :D

I have a Prime membership and I've never had anything delivered by RM, it's always come by courier.

So crushed blacks = contrast too strong.

It does give the appearance of strong contrast but crushed blacks occurs when different shades of grey get clipped so they show up black, so there is less gradation in darker colours.

Xbox 360 also messed with video output but not as severely, that's why PS3 games were said to look 'washed out' a lot, Sony didn't mess with the output so you got a lot more dark greys instead of blacks.

The sound is very weird on my setup , playing Fifa I had no commentary so I had to change audio just to stereo then playing battlefield if a jet fly's over all you can hear is the jet and if you fire your gun its cometely silent until jet fly's past its like it can only handle one direction of sound

How do you do save game management? One of my sons did first few Forza races on my profile and I want to start from scratch now he has his own profile.

They said its been sent Royal Mail and is untrackable so I presume its the post man. I complained and they have given me an extra month free.
