Hello people! I have an Xbox One S style controller which is faulty and 'sticks' in one direction when I play games. I purchased in a store around 8 months ago, sadly I no longer have the receipt and paid in cash at the time.

Considering the Xbox One S only came out around 12 months ago I thought Microsoft would be able to honor the warranty for me since its only been available such a short time. However when I contacted there customer service they will only replace it if I own an Xbox console which seems completely mad to me.

Any advice or things I should try before I rip open my controller to fix it and void the warranty?

First of all go to the store not Microsoft(unless it was a Microsoft store)
Microsoft imploys a lot of monkeys and they can be infuriating to deal with and often don't know their own policies.
In future don't pay by cash. A bank statement would have solved this issue.

I think you have no legal rights here, and will be relying on good will.

If the only thing holding them back from replacing it is you owning a console, then surely the obvious answer to just tell them that you do have an XBox.

I thought of this, but it relies on a serial number etc. Sadly my 'friends' who own Xbox consoles are too stingy to help me get a replacement.

I'm guessing Microsoft don't deal with controller warranties unless bought from them.

They only deal with consoles from any reseller.

don't know why you think MS should sort you out, you bought the item from the shop, your purchase contract was w/ them, as theirs might be w/ MS to replace stock they bought that was faulty.

Normally items have a 12 month manufactures warranty. Do you think product manufacturers should have no accountability when their products fail?

They did when I had a faulty limited edition 360 pad bought from Game a couple of years ago.

Mine also had the same (common) problem as the OP.

MS were great, as it was a LE they didn't even require the old pad sent back to them.

Got a brand new replacement, swapped the LE shell over, result.

Without any proof of purchase as the OP stated, somehow I don't think you would get anywhere.
Microsoft aren't disputing proof of purchase.

In fact generally I find manufacturers don't ask for proof of purchase, logitech replaced my mouse and Shure replaced my earphones without asking for proof. They know the product is under warranty because of the serial number.
