Finally got round to playing Indiana Jones and gave up after a few hours. Really disappointed as I had high hopes having loved the films and wrongly assumed it would be a Tomb Raider sort of game.

I did exactly the same. I expected some action packed adventure game but instead I found myself sneaking around a monastery looking for clues

I thought exactly the same thing to begin with, but the game itself improves hugely after that first rather tame and boring intro to its mechanics.

Definitely an acquired taste though.

Pre-installed Atomfall yesterday. I've been out all day and was looking forward to trying it out this evening.

Just tried to do so and it says it needs an update of 6.87Gb. Eeek!!! That's either a good thing (developers on the ball with issues on release day) or a bad thing (bugs and issues that they missed needing fixed on release day)!!!!:D

Hopefully the former!!

Boring story, gameplay and a really poor menu system i thought. Started Avowed instead and now that's way more enjoyable, actually sat and played it for a few hours last night instead of playing on the PC.
Well Avowed didn't last too long either. Quite enjoyed everything apart from the combat, too much weapon swapping, controlling allies and dealing with multiple enemies in most encounters. Just became a button mashing chore which is not what I like in my RPGs. Atmonfall is my next one to try.

I bounced off Avowed too. Not the worst game I've ever played, but found the combat to be annoying plus the RPG elements were minimal. I did enjoy Indiana Jones, however, the gameplay is very simplistic and there were quite a few bugs when I played it at launch. Atomfall isn't really a genre I enjoy, so going to give it a miss even though I have access to it on Game Pass. I understand it's not a long game ie. maybe 20 hrs to complete.

Thought the same with Indiana Jones. Likely would have bought it on day one if it wasn’t on game pass. Luckily I dodged a bullet.
Started Atomfall today, didn’t think it would be my kind of game but thought I’d give it a go. Made a bandage for the dude at the start, slipped out the door with his keycard lost all audio. Quit the game, restarted the Xbox, loaded in my save and still no audio. I’m 5 minutes in, if that but it’s enough to put me off.

Gamepass must be a godsend for these studios. Their slice of the money from Microsoft must be all that’s keeping them afloat as surely people can’t be happy paying full price for the rubbish they are pumping out these days.

Yup, the quality control / ouput from MS first party studios is appalling given the resources they have. There are a few exceptions, but more often than not games end up being undercooked and/or buggy. It's in stark contrast to the experience with Nintendo and Sony games.

I wonder how the payment system works for developers? Do they get paid per download of their game? Or a certain amount of hours played or is it just a simple flat fee to put it on there on day 1?

I don’t think we can just blame gamepass or MS for the games as titles have been releasing broken as hell to meet deadline dates long before GP was a thing but games are definitely worse these days. In almost every respect, design, quality and imagination.

Don't have any links on hand, but I'm certain I read some developers say they received funding in advance of their game's launch.

I just a look around and can't find much info that isn't speculation. I read a good book on how the Spotify payment system works - in short a listener needs to pass the first 20 seconds and as an artist you need to hope Swift or Ed Shearin doesn't have a new song out that week but that's not really going to work for games. I would assume MS would have the exact figures of how many times your game was download and the amount of hours played, suppose they could even figure out number of people who have signed up just to play Atomfall that week, for example.

So you create a game idea and some early code, pitch it to MS. Tell them its going to cost $30m and you are 10% complete. They hand over the dosh and you re write and re engineer that remaining 90% down from what was going to cost you $27m to $17m. Game lands on time, you get a big payday, game sucks but who cares, you aren't relying on reviews or physical sales. Sounds too easy :D

How are people getting on with Atomfall? Not many places you can go without a fight and there are loads of enemies plus ones with guns, shooting draws even more enemies. Am I just going to the wrong places or am I expected to melee all the gun weilders?

I posted my thoughts about Atomfall in the 'What games are you playing' thread, so I'll just copy/paste:-

4 and a half ish hours into Atomfall. Really not sure about it at all. Aside from the annoying sound glitch, I'm trying hard not to be bored.

To begin with, the quirky/quaint English countryside setting is a bit different but in a good way. Kinda getting 'Everybody's Gone to the Rapture' vibes. Visually it's nice, but the landscapes and settings are becoming samey.

The combat is fairly repetitive but for me one of the biggest issues is plot wise, it just all seems a bit disjointed. Almost every time you speak to an NPC, you're given another snippet of story/plot which is the usual 'go here/speak to this person/then go somewhere else or come back to the initial NPC who gave you the hint or task'. These all soon mount up to the extent that because of a huge list of things to go and follow up, you soon get a bit lost story wise and loose track of where you are supposed to be, who you need to talk to and what you need to do once you've spoken to said NPC's. The stealth aspect of it to me at least, is very weak. For example, even with the skill which allows quieter 'takedowns' if you sneak up behind an NPC and try and take them out stealthily, the other NPC's in that area immediately know you have done so, even if they are a good distance away or in another room. I've decided just to kill everyone and go in guns blazing at all times as its impossible to do it quietly.

Maybe it's just me, but there's no 'flow' and as such no particular impetus to work through all the many listed tasks to complete. It doesn't even seem to be a case of it being distinctly divided into main quests/side quests. Now, I did read in a few previews of the game that it was designed as such and they wanted to leave it up to you to to roam and explore as you choose. So again, maybe I'm missing the point there. There's also no fast travel ability to speak of, and sometimes the map areas can be very confusing in terms of how to get from one specific area to another.

I'll keep at it for a bit longer, but it seems the more I play it, the more I'm getting disinterested in delving any further. It's certainly not one of those 2:00am in the morning 'just one more go' games, from my point of view anyway!

Let's hope they fix that sound bug soon :)

I quite like the go where you want aspect but everywhere involves fighting lots of enemies. As not many bullets are available I'm taking hits with most skirmishes where there is more than 1 enemy, with the limited healing items I can find / craft this is quite a struggle. All my places of interest are at the opposite side of the map meaning fighting or attempting to sneak to get there, as you mentioned stealth seems pretty flaky. I'll persist a bit more but unless this improves I can see me losing interest.

Heads up, guys - there's another Atomfall update been released today - 1.04

Changelog indicates fixes for audio issues and game crashes. Yaaaay!!! :D

Once you get all your crafting abilities it gets pretty easy. It’s just very tedious most of the time is running around one side to the other collecting things. I have just about completed it but I’m well and truly fed up of it now.

Sound still cuts out for me. Setting the auto save to 1hr fixes it just need to remember to save manually.

Yeah, despite the patch the sound still cuts out for me but it seems more random now i.e. I played for about two hours yesterday and it didn't cut out at all. Yet tried it this morning and 10 mins in the sound cuts out.

Found a decent farming location in Skethermoor - the Protocol Field Station. The enemies in there all seem to have decent weapons which means you can grab them and then store them in one of the Pneumatic Tube machines then head over to the Protocol Workshop near the trader called Bootsy who is upstairs in a house and trade any weapons you've picked up with him. Once I got the weapon crafting ability I managed to get my rifles and shotguns upgraded to 'pristine', thanks to the loot the enemies drop in the Protocol Field Station. The enemies in the field station will respawn, but it appears to get them to do so you need to leave the area entirely and then return.

I reckon this game would benefit from Fast Travel, it would make it slightly less irritating to play!

Just finished it done a couple of endings which is enough for me. It was ok kept me busy for a few days.

Back to Assassins Creed now……lol

I'm about to run out of storage space on our Series X 1TB.

I'ts got a 1TB Expansion card, and then every game I can I've put on a 4TB USB 3.0 SSD Drive.

I'll swap the 1TB card for a 2TB, but surely there is a better solution. My son is Autistic, so its a likely flash point if I have to keep moving games between storage so he can play them.... !
