Hi there,

Does anyone know what Microsoft charge to repair an E74 hardware fault? It's a single red LED - bottom right corner.

Cheers

Right.....so why would anyone pay MS £85 to repair e74?

You have two options.

Put he £85 towards a new 360 and ebay the non working one for £40+P&P. Pretty much covers the new 360.

OR

Take it apart, whack the mobo in the oven to re-flow the solder and apply the xclamp fix. Total cost = not much at all and will 95% work.

I'm quite tempted to strip it down and get some heat around the ANA HANA/ GPU area. Just thought I'd see what the damage is having Microsoft fix it.

Brilliant - got the cases off, just need to nab a T8 torx bit from someone. :)

For these M5 machine screws - do they go through the original motherbord casing or do the screw heads rest against the underside of the motherboard with nylon washers?

Cheers

They just go under the MB, god help us if we had to do that, nigh on impossible.

Altho my kits had the screws with metal then nylon washers, so you are sandwiching the MB between the nylon washers.

Also, dont know wether this helps or not, but each screw I tapped the handle of the torx screw driver into the head of the screw, seems to cut into it and give a better grip, ya dont wanna mess up any of those heads lol.

Well, thanks for all the advice guys - it works! Cost me a grand total of 80p too. :)

I used a tin foil template identical to this, went in the oven for 3 minutes at 230 degrees. Cleaned old paste off using rubbing alcohol, used some AS5 and some M5 machine screws cut to size.

I didn't use any nylon/ metal washers anywhere - hunted high and low for these in local shops and found nothing. You can get away without them but you need to tighten opposite corners of the heatsinks and regularly hold it up to the light to see what the contact is like.

Be interesting if this holds as I was led to believe that the nylon/ metal washer sandwich was an integral part in making th repair last.

What the hell, i switched my 360 on today and i get sound, but no image. Tried everything. Really annoyed, i've hardly used it.

Is this fixable with the x-clamp / ovan bake thingy?

Yes. The GPU has "failed". The same connection breaks under the CPU that cause the RRoD can also occur to the GPU, but the rest of the console works perfectly.

Again, if in warranty, phone Microsoft. If not, oven and clamp it.
