XCOM : Enemy Unknown - by Firaxis Games - Thread

I suspect console controls will be far more forgiving in a turn based game.
True, but I can see them "dumbing it down" for the average console gamer.

I expect it to lose about half of the complexity, in turn making it X-COM for dummies.

I may be wrong, but that's how it looks from the screen-shots.

Ethereal mind-controlling a blaster launcher guy inside your drop-ship (with most of the men inside is pretty much the worst thing that can happen.

Apart from 2seconds later when you realise you have not saved it for 7 hours..........

haha :D

Had this moments before :D

Remember waking my whole uni flat, and getting grief for it, for going ballistic at 5am when this happened to me and killed nearly all my best troops in one go :p:D:p

Not overly concerned about the console buttons, not yet anyway.

Bought UFO: Extraterrestrials Gold during the Steam sale, this thread has put me in the mood to finally play it. Yeah its not XCom but it'll do!

The whiff of console provoked an "Oh..." from me. Still, think positive.

Oh it gets worse.

Only have one save, and discover that's corrupted. I never did finish XCom after that, but I did learn a lesson with PC gaming... Always have a back up save on the go. :D

My personal favourate was persistently failing to shoot anything down and not getting anywhere to begin with.

Whilst I am all for them remaining as faithful to the original as possible, there are a few little things that could do with some tweaks.

ie Armour is pretty much useless in the original, as are tanks. Also, the heavy plasma is so much better than any other weapon that it renders them all redundant (besides the blaster launcher and stun launcher, which have different utility anyway).

It would be nice if the weapons had some more pros and cons.

Can't wait for it though! :)

Anyone tried Xenonauts out of interest? It is in early alpha now...

i got the originals in the steam sale and have been loving every minute!

Nothing like blowing a hole in the side of a UFO with the guided cruise missile thing then spending a few turns just launching missiles inside it and listening to the death rattles of aliens, then going in and just witnessing the wasteland :D

Bring it on! I bet they manage to muck it up somehow though with "extra features" that they think we couldnt live without.

Just a line by line rewrite with new gfx will be fine k thx ta.

All this console whining, let us not forget that the original X-COM was ported to the original PS1 and suffered not at all that I can recall.

Was this also known as UFO - Enemy Unknown or was that a different game? If it is the same game then dayum is was a hard hard game... well it was for me at the time.

Yes, it was (I think) "UFO - Enemy Unknown" in the UK and "X-COM" in the US.

At least this time around I won't have to frantically swap over 3.5" diskettes every time I get to a crash site/encounter :)

Ahh yes I could never get anywhere with this it was so hard! I remember playing this on my A1200 (dayum that's going back some!), more than once I got my butt handed to me without even stepping two steps out of the drop ship due to some smegger of an alien camping somewhere with a sniper rifle (or something similar).

I remember playing Rebelstar Raiders back in 1984 on my trusty Spectrum!

This was followed by Rebelstar and Laser Squad before UFO. They're all classics so check them out!

I know this is just fanboy rose tinted glasses talking, but still... anyone else hoping that by the time this comes out we'll only have to wait a few weeks until someone mods the entire game so all aliens, ships, weapons, technologies, and missions exactly resemble the 1993 release?

I really like the look of the new version so far and if you want the old look then you can buy the full pack on Steam for like £9.
