XCOM : Enemy Unknown - by Firaxis Games - Thread

Killerkebab, it's still a great game today. I play it from time to time.

The original just needs wheel mouse support, the ability to 'remember' how you've kitted out your troops in previous missions and a higher resolution

All this console whining, let us not forget that the original X-COM was ported to the original PS1 and suffered not at all that I can recall.
Yes, it was PORTED TO the PS1 - not the other way around.

It makes a massive difference, it the screen-shots we are seeing so far have X-box controls - not a good sign.

The best case scenario is going to be a clunky control system - I can't see how they won't dumb it down for the average x-boxer.

Everything gets a console release these days, it's not a big deal anymore. Deus Ex, Space Marine, Skyrim. All suffered terribly from having a console release too

Well actually Skyrim kind of did with the whole inventory thing, but it doesn't mean the gameplay is automatically going to be dumbed down for 'console tards'.

Deus ex was vastly inferior to the original (shallow), space marine was a mindless shooter (I've got it, played through once) & Skyrim had a **** poor interface - while a great game sky-rim was still dumbed down compared to the game-play in Morrowind - as was obvlion.

Your point?.

This is Morrowind that was out on the original xbox aswell? My point is that anyone who wants to make money these days doesn't restrict themselves to a single platform. Panicking about dumbing-down on this basis alone just doesn't make sense anymore.

Best remove the video link before you get a holiday...

My point is that the controls were absolutely fine, so quit whining about them. As for it being dumbed down, that has got nothing to do with it being console or pc based, it's down to whomever is running the project.

Nice article.
I'm impressed withn most of what I've seen, but I am very worried by the focus on small squads. I've seen examples using a 3-man squad and a 4-man squad.

The fun with the old game of haveing 10 or 14 man squads, is you could have half or more of the squad die, and still win the mission. (I remember a few nailbiting missions where only one or two survived.)

With a 3 or 4-man squad, each casualty is a much larger blow than losing one or two men in a 10-man squad. It seems like the game will be a lot less forgiving of mistakes.

Very cool.

I played one of the UFO games, afterlight I think but it was a bit meh.

Afterlight was one of the later releases that had nothing to do with the original.

when people go on about how good xcom is they are always talking about the first 2 UFO:Enemy unknown and Terror from the Deep.

Let's hope they don't try to add in anything silly.

Just the same as the original but with nicer graphics/resolution is all I want!

Yeah Shadez I understand that the later UFO games are made by a different developer and are simply "inspired by/similar to" the early XCOM titles.

I just mentioned it because its my only experience of these games (never played an xcom game in my life).

Enjoyable interview - looking forward to the next two parts...

I'd forgotten how big those cruise ships were in Terror From the Deep - and just how annoying it was trolling up and down the ship turn after turn to track down the last alien.

Really looking forward to this - and fingers crossed that they'll start on remaking Alpha Centauri next :D

Regarding the second point, there's a utility called UFOExtender which does a good job of that and allows a lot of other cool features to be added. It needs the 'Collector's Edition' exe, which I *think* is packaged with the Steam version for compatibility but is not used by default.
