XCOM : Enemy Unknown - by Firaxis Games - Thread

OMG!

First mission of the day, upgraded with lasers an stuff and got a complete ass kicking. My A-Team, they're all gone. :( For good measure, I even lost an interceptor that same day. That's game over man, game over...

Think I may have to focus a bit more on armour next time around... Or find a way to stop them shooting through walls. :D

Yes, getting the Carapace (sp?) armour makes a world of difference, it at least stops a large portion of the one-shot kills from plasma pistols and occasionally the light plasma rifles the sectoids/floaters/thin men wield.

Okay, couple of quick questions.

I'm only just starting out in the game having only done about half a dozen missions. Are you limited all the way through the game as to what you can carry in your backpack?. It's annoying that despite it being part of a weapon, your SCOPE takes up a slot in the backpack so it stops you from carrying first aid kits etc.

When you want to open a door quietly by pressing 'V' do you need to be standing directly in front of it or can you be stood to either side of the door?.

I've got my initial base in Europe located in Germany. And a second satellite up over North America with one Interceptor covering that area. Is there a 'best' way to proceed with this as far as bases go, building them etc?. Also, what is a good path to follow regarding research when first starting out?.

Lastly, whats a good way to make money?. I know about the grey market but I recall in the original game there was a fairly quick way of making a fast buck which involved selling corpses of aliens?.

Grey market isn't great in this game, you need to get Satelites up ASAP, after building generator, next building should be satelite link, place it by the old satelite link and you get a bonus satelite uplink.
You can sell corpses in grey market but its only $5 each.

In the old game as the aliens dropped weapons, you could sell them and roll in money. Can't do that in this game, can't even sell them if you stun all aliens.

Later in the game, you get deep pockets which adds one more slot. Look on promotion screen it's the penultimate slot.

Can be stood by the side.

"Bases" are cheap $20, get one in each continent ASAP.

You also need to reserch the priority reserchs untill you get arc thrower. Once you got arc thrower, use it wisely. You don't want to stun all aliens, as you won't pick up weapon fragments. Howerpver you do want to stun at least one of each type and some you want to stun a few more, untill you have enough weapons to supply your people. Wande you research plasma weapons, they are extremely expensive to make, better to harvest a few.

Also stunning aliens and into rotating them, will give you lots of upgrades to build in the foundry and reserch tokens, that massively reduce research times.

Well I only just got around to playing it last night for a short 30 min go. 2nd mission and 2 of my guys panic, one of them shot my only promoted soldier and killed him, the other missed the alien who then killed the other squad member not panicked :(

I guess I'll have to try and have a proper go again now and hopefully it won't be as bad. Also, people have been saying to try and get laser weapons first, but which research thing leads to that? I have the starting options of weapon parts, alien materials and autopsy.

This game has the best 'one more turn' factor since Civilization; and the best before that was the original XCOM IMO.

Only gripe I have is the stupid low dollar values for everything. Add a couple of zeros to all the prices and it wouldn't feel like I am running a worldwide defense organization for less than the average US lawyer makes in an hour :-)

To anyone who ordered from GMG who hasn't got their Civ5 key for pre-ordering (I'm not sure if they sent some keys out, or none) they have said that people should start receiving keys shortly in an email and the keys will also be able to be viewed on the Keys page of your GMG account. I haven't got my key just yet but at least I know my free civ5 is coming soon :)

Good stuff, another hero taking on ironman! :D

I had to really force myself to play ironman on the originals and on other strategy games (total war series are a good example) where it was not implemented as an option.

It is difficult, and can be frustrating when you take losses, but I think it adds so much to the game, and it makes it actually possible to lose rather than save->reload->reload->reload "oh I did it".

Yeh, I love the fact that you can actually lose. Really gives more impact with decisions and the results. I'm really surprised how much I'm enjoying this game.

Though I have to capture this outside alien alive atm, and it's giving me hassle. This mission with UFO's aren't coming up enough, and last time I was ready to shoot him with my crappy pistol then capture him, but I crit'd and killed him!

Still, loving the game and I can't understand why you wouldn't play ironman. It seems like that's the point of the game to me, and alien invasion with a real thread that you can actually lose. No 'oh mission failed, restart till I complete it and move'.

I'm suffering severe bouts of Rage Quitting at the moment. :o I think yesterdays sadly ill-fated sadist-mode campaign must have been a fluke, I can't make it out of the first handful of missions without being owned. I might petition Firaxis to remove cover, after all it does nothing.

Oh well, time to start another campaign... ;)

This game is just as addictive as the original :)

That it certainly is. Only downside so far is that your sense of time passing goes out the window, as does your social life.

The 6 mad squad is slightly annoying, as is not being able to pick up a dead soldiers' equipment during a mission. Great fun though regardless.

2xSnipers + 2Heavies + 1Support + 1Assault= frag-fest & lots of collateral damage :)

For half my game I didn't see a ufo :PP realy annoying couldn't make or research anything as I needed alloy then much larger ufo's started turnung up and I didn't have the tech to shot them down :P got some after one landed :)
