XCOM : Enemy Unknown - by Firaxis Games - Thread

Loved the originals, especially the music.

Is it open ended with random maps or is the game on rails with a set campaign?

Its on my list to buy.

As far as I can tell pretty open ended, not there's much point like the original, at some point you achieve all the research and upgrade your men as much as possible. But there doesn't seem to be any time limit to do the story line base assaults.

So I'm about to start a new game for the first time. The only strategy games ive really played are starcraft 2, old C&C and a bit of Company of Heroes. I'm not bad, but not awesome at these games. I'm guessing I should go for normal, but would ironman just be frustrating to add onto that?

Im a sucker for getting physical copies of games - so I Cruised into the green supermarket for this during my lunchbreak - they had the display boxes on the shelf but the woman at the counter checked the stock and they hadnt been delivered yet.

Anyone else had any issues getting a physical copy today? (walk-in style rather than pre-order). Im going to try the purple place after work.

If you've never played xcom before then I suggest normal to start with, if you fancy a bit of a challenge then go for normal ironman.

I'd only recommend going for classic or harder if your familiar with xcom and know which things to research first :)

Also do not skip the tutorial on your first play through, it makes life easier for a starter as you get a few extra bonus items.

If your sadistic and like pain and suffering then go classic ironman or impossible and prepair to die.... a lot.

Yup new to XCOM (bar my hour session with the original last night :P ).

Think I'll do Normal Ironman. I appreciate a challenge, but considering I have no idea about literally anything in this game yet I think a higher difficulty would be silly. I have no problem losing though, hence the ironman option. Here we go!

Good stuff, another hero taking on ironman! :D

I had to really force myself to play ironman on the originals and on other strategy games (total war series are a good example) where it was not implemented as an option.

It is difficult, and can be frustrating when you take losses, but I think it adds so much to the game, and it makes it actually possible to lose rather than save->reload->reload->reload "oh I did it".

I have decided to not name my troops until they earn a nickname, I was tearing through good names at an alarming rate.

My current playthrough, casualties:

None of them had earned a nickname yet, so default names. It sucks to be Victor Soto...

Even worse to die on a mission called "MORBID RING" hahaha! Oh the inhumanity. Chi Deng, you took one for the team.

Perfect!
Look forward to playing it.

Cheers

should have said, just be aware I haven't completed it, but so far I haven't seen any time limits to do the base assaults, which advance the story line.

Running it on Normal iron man and so far i've only managed to loose Jean-luc Picard and Korban Dallas so far. Picard was mind controlled by the first sectoid commander i met and promptly caused panic in the ranks and 2 of my guys blew his face off.

Korban Dallas was killed off by a floater. THe only reason most of my men currently live is because of Rick Astley the sniper with his double tap ability he has taken out so many men about to be devoured by chrysalids.

OK - Finished it.

That was pretty fantastic.

I love turn based games. I have problems with games that have too many controls as I get overwhelmed.

Here is me playing another game the other day.
