XCOM : Enemy Unknown - by Firaxis Games - Thread

Agree about some of the dumbing down, but I still think it's a fantastic remake. Haven't put so many hours into a game in such a short in years.

And the cinematics are great, jeez, lighten up.

The cinematics are brief, you can skip them with a quick click or ESC key for map load.

I love the fluid nature of the game - there are no load times and you're constantly jumping from battle to planning to research to manufacturing.

As others have said, would be nice to be able to aim manually to knock walls out. And there are a few small bugs that could do with a patch.

As someone loving this game but having not played the original what do people think has been dumbed down exactly? (all i know is that in the original you could have multiple bases but know very little re. gameplay) Seems to be quite a bit of nitpicking here as of late regarding what is imo a fantastic game but having not played the original may be im missing some massive glaring omissions. Guess the devs can't really please everyone though.

Let me first say I'm enjoying XCom. But it is very dumbed down, I'm afraid.

1. No stats. Original had strength, health, two kinds of accuracy, stamina, reactions, and more...

2. Reactions in the originals were based on a sliding scale of how much you moved in that turn and how many TUs you had left as a % of your total. Reactions in this new one are always on or always off.

3. You always get your Skyranger and *all your squad equipment* back even if your entire squad gets wiped out.

4. You can't pick up stuff on the ground.
5. You soldiers don't have an inventory.
6. Only one base.
7. You can't shoot walls, vehicles or terrain objects except accidentally.
8. There's no incendiary weapons (I don't think)
9. Fire doesn't spread.
10. No electro flares (portable light sources).
11. Smoke doesn't affect line of sight (which is very weird).
12. Grenades never miss ;)
13. Darkness doesn't appear to affect line of sight (my guys can see just as far, I think, at night). Nightime appears to be cosmetic only.

There's probably more.

Anyway I've just lost on Classic iron man after 122 days.

14/3 successful/failed missions.
110/18 aliens/soldiers killed.

In one month 3 nations left, the month after 2, and that was that.

I think you basically have to go all out for engineers and satellites to win, no? In this game engineers are basically the most important thing, ever.

Whilst I agree with absolutely everything that has been said here, I still love this game.

I am really enjoying it and will continue to enjoy playing it in further walk through's of the single player campaign and that says something now days

Also,You had much bigger squads, you had to buy all your ammo even for your fighter jets, there were alien resupply ships always in the vicinity of an alien base, which you could rinse for goodies but the aliens would come after you and attack your base for doing this.Theres lots more also.....

Anyhow ive uninstalled XCOM,luckily i bought a physical copy so im off to sell it in the week.

Its a great game at first but once you play it for a few days you can see how shallow it really is,once the dust settles people wont go back to playing it as its very much on rails dont matter what difficulty you play.

Had a 6 hour blast on it yesterday, Ironman, Normal. Enjoying so far but like others have said it's extremely, and unsurprisingly, dumbed-down.

Some of the missions, crash sites for instance, just have aliens sat around the map not doing anything, dormant. It's only when you enter their LOS that they become a threat or scarper for cover.

I want them to blow up my ship before I could even get out like in TFTD.

14. Infinite fuel for your interceptors.
15. The tactical part is so simplified it almost plays itself. With time units in one turn a guy could move a bit, look around, move a bit more and if an enemy was spotted you could select the type of shot you wanted with several different chances of hitting (or if you were feeling lucky on Apocalypse you could blow the building up next to him and have it fall on them). Now all we have is, move anywhere in the blue zone and if you see an alien you have this one pre determined chance of hitting them and you have no say in the matter - where are my options!!
16. No proper black market. On Apocalypse the faction that had turned to the aliens would attack your base with the very weapons you had just sold - that was a seriously good idea!

This game is still ok - but that is only due to the sheer greatness of the original that you can take a piece of it and dilute it right down and still have something better than 90% of other games coming out now.

You do realise Apocalypse was a sequel right? This is Firaxis's first installment of course it is never going to be as content heavy.

Stop feeling hard done to by constant comparision and just enjoy it for its own merits like the rest of us are.

I'm really enjoying it. I wasn't expecting a faithful remake as it was never intended to be a faithful remake. When I want to play a faithful (modern) remake I load up Xenonauts.

I've given up on 2 games so far on Classic difficulty due to money/squad issues. Doing much better on the 3rd run through.

Most of the 'greatness' in the originals is rose tinted hindsight to be honest. A challenge overcome in formative years. For many of us xcom is a peice of who we are and who we were during the early days of discovery on PC as a platform. Firaxis havent dumbed a game down, they have removed many many barriers to entry whilst maintaining the spirit of the original, at least in my opinion. I think a lot of you are just whiny autistic nerds who need everything 'just so'. As has been said there are much smaller games out there catering to the super hardcore crowd, but they wont need to sell as well as this one.

Played a ton of the original and TFtD in the past (which I loved), and am still enjoying this remake.

I can see some areas of the game have been simplified - in some cases for the better, some cases not, but it seems to be a matter of personal taste.

Currently kicking ass on normal whhile I learn all the techs and so on, when Im done with this playthrough Im looking forward to a sterner challenge in classic mode.

What sort of party comps are people using?

Ive been doubling up on "heavies" with 1 of everything else, but Im thinking having 2 "Support" might be better as I love their abilities, particularly the second inventory slot(!)

Also, Im always strapped for alloys, any tips on getting more? (aside from just running more missions ofc).

really enjoying the game. I'm having a problem with getting to attached to my soldiers thought once I name them.

Anyone else having issues where it stops on the mission control screen when coming back from a mission and wont do anything then loses all my progress since last save.

I understand that some people wanted a HD remake of the original game completely unchanged, but I think a lot of the stuff that has been removed makes sense, in terms of stream lining the whole experience somethings were bound to be cut, making Xcom more accessible to a new audience was always going to upset the purists no matter how well this game turned out, on the whole I think it's a fantastic game with a few rough edges, the UI could do with an overhaul IMO & the movement of troops to higher/lower elevations is poor but they are my own minor niggles which will no doubt be fixed in patches or by community made mods.
This could have been a disaster that completely **** on the memory of the original but IMO this is a loving homage & it's not like you can't still play the original or Xenonauts when that's released.

My only problem with this is that between Normal and Classic cover is reduced in effectiveness a bit too much, and the aliens destroy solid brick walls REALLY easily.

Apart from that it is fun and addictive.
I think that other games will fill the niche for being as close as possible to the original, and I will probably enjoy them more, but this is a good game in it's own right.

I go with 2 assault guys armed with ark throwers, I try and stun at least 1 alien per game to get their plasma gun as I've read that they are really expensive to produce yourself. My squad size is only at 5 right now, when I get the 6th slot I may go with another sniper. I've got 1 set up as a long-range dude and another with the Gunslinger talent and hits really hard with his pistol. He'll hit even harder after some Foundry research.

Run n Gun and Rapid Fire is a seriously potent combo, especially on a suppressed target with holo-targetting on it.

It's still a brilliant turn based strategy game. I'v put a ridiculous amount of hours into it already and I'm still really enjoying it. I don't think the replay value is going to be as good as the old Enemy Unknown and TFTD though just because you don't have the same freedoms. I'm disappointed that I can only have a squad of 6 and only one skyranger. I used to like using a small core of officers and then loads of meatshield redshirts :D
