XCOM : Enemy Unknown - by Firaxis Games - Thread

Is anyone else having a nightmare of a time trying to aim grenades, seems like the camera just goes flying off in various directions, and you really have to make microscopic movements towards your target to get it right.

For me, this game has really not lived up to the hype. Maybe I needed to be a fanboy of the original game (which I never played) but it just seems to be land on a small map, alien jumps out from behind a car, nice graphical cut scene ( although its not actually ground breaking gfx) kill alien and it's friend, normally by shooting a boat load rockets , rinse and repeat.

The novelty wore off after about 2 hours. I may be missing something, but it's just an average game, certainly not the second coming of the messiah that it was portrayed to be in some previews.

Mouse control is awful. Use a gamepad if you have one.

23. Smoke inhalation never causes unconsciousness.
24. No proximity mines.
25. Aliens don't appear to lose morale when all their mates die. Not seen an alien panic yet.

It's kind of staggering to realise that we took all of the complexity of UFO foregranted. I used to think games would get increasingly complex over the years.

I never anticipated when I was young that games would instead be "streamlined". In other news, I saw Idiocracy the other night ;)

Pretty sure I've seen an alien panic. I more regularly see them make tactical withdrawals after I gun one or two of them down (and it's announced to your team that they're falling back). Not quite panic in that instance granted, as its controlled, but has a similar benefit.

Edit: Oh - panic in aliens is only induced when using the appropriate Psi power to do it. Otherwise, only the fall back.

I'm from a similar background (never really played the original properly), also not a huge fan of turn based games normally...however I'm really enjoying this! I especially like that there's this whole metagame around the individual encounters (the base, finances, researching etc). I'm not bored yet anyway :) I guess it's each to his own? I can see why some people wouldn't enjoy it, and I can also see why huge fans of the original might not like changes/differences that Fireaxis have introduced.

Obviously up to you but I'd really give it more than a couple of hours. The fights did seem fairly straightforward to start with but got a lot more challenging after several hours, for me anyway.

Indeed.

This evening was a grim session. Having Cyberdiscs and Mutons in one's face from the outset only resulted in one outcome. All my veterans, including Dutch, Hudson and Tom Berenger were blown away in line of duty.

Bad times... Time to restart. :D

Been looking at open source alternatives, the best I have found is UFO Alien Invasion. The game is brilliant for Open Source (free) but the team are desperately seeking help for their 3d character models.

OK, I'm done with this game. It's just a game of roll the dice.

I just had a Thin Man, not in any sort of cover at all, and he's in overwatch so I can't run up to him. The game dropped him right in front of my squad (alien reinforcements). Anyhow, he was really close, like 6 tiles away from where my men where clustered.

I have four guys aim and shoot at him, with 78% chance to hit at best (the sniper), and 45% chance to hit at worst (everybody else). This guy is within arms reach.

Every single soldier misses every single shot for two whole rounds, and he kills 3 of my men plus the VIP I had nearly got out.

That's not bad luck. That's a combat system that is plain broken.

So yeah, I'm done with this. UFO was hard but fair. This is just a game of roll the dice and miss shots a four year old would make, let alone professional soldiers.

Let me repeat that: no cover for alien; arms length away; 4 soldiers shooting (had no 'nades), every single shot misses for two whole turns. He blasts two people with his plasma and poisons two others to death.

It's not Classic by a long shot. It's a "you're going to lose now, for now apparent reason" game. My tactics were fine. I know someone will be along any second now to say "bad tactics". All my guys were in cover - the thin man was dropped in on us - he had no cover. We all missed every single shot for two whole combat rounds. That's 4 shots round one, and 3 shots round two. All misses.

I don't care if the game says I have 45% chance to hit POINT BLANK against a stationary target. It's retarded. Firaxis, your game is disappointing me.

The game doesn't do random rolls, I believe there's a seed which is what it is. If you don't use a "roll" the AI does. It could actually pay to reload and take no shots at all, then the AI gets the crappy rolls.

At least that's how I understand it works.

Assault with flush, with sniper overwatching his position. Problem solved. In 2 turns you could have easily flanked him, sure he may have a reaction shot once but you got other guys out there then to get around him. In open ground your best shot with a sniper would be higher than 78%, he must have had some kind of cover.

With 4 soliders around the thin man 4 tiles away and a 75% chance of death you would expect a kill.He doesnt need to explain it anymore than what he already has.;)

saw this a few times in around 30 hours of play.

had a bloody major miss a clean shot from 3 tiles away on a beserker with 2 bars of health. I though pfft easy kill in close shoot it point blank.

no miss from 3 tiles away and my guy dies next round after my 2 other guys missed a iirc a 60% and a 48%

After the first turn of everyone missing I was so amazed that I deliberately didn't flank him. I wanted to see how far I could take this.

I didn't believe the game would let me miss 7 shots at point blank range, but I had to test it.

And yes, the game will let you miss 7 shots at point blank range.

I know I could have flanked, but I wanted to expose a design deficiency in the game instead. I think I did that pretty well.

7 shots at point blank range shouldn't all miss.

Think about what a turn represents. These 4 soldiers were focusing their fire on a single stationary target with no other distractions. They failed for two turns to hit something in front of them which wasn't in cover.

Forget flanking, that's broken.

I also miss having more than 1 grenade per man. Heck in UFO if there was a guy with good strength and good throwing accuracy he'd get a pistol and a satchel full of grenades.

I don't understand why they'd want to limit us so badly in some ways, then go ahead and give us infinite ammo?

How does that make sense? One grenade per man but infinite ammo for everyone? And why does wearing a vest mean I can't carry a grenade? WTF?

After 6 shots missing what are the odds of the 7th shot missing?

The same as the odds on the first one missing.

Hang on. Are you saying there was no cover for the alien, that he was very close, and that you had 4 soldiers shooting and every single shot missed for two whole turns?

I'm not sure you're being clear about this. ;)

I do find myself yelling, '******* hit the target' quite a lot it must be said.
