XCOM : Enemy Unknown - by Firaxis Games - Thread

It can be a bit if you're not careful, but I'd still take squadsight over snapshot any day.

Would battle scanner allow you to hit the target that's out of sight, without actually moving? I went for disabling shot, which seems to have been a waste. Every time I have used it the enemy then throw a grenade instead which causes more damage :o.

Loving the double tap ability that I have on both my snipers. They completely wiped out 3 of them Mutons and one of them armoured flying things in one turn on my last mission. It would usually take me two turns to deal with that lot as my other squad members tend to get awful hit percentage on the Mutons for some reason, and miss a lot of the time.

Snipers can still be useful with plasma pistols in all honesty after they've moved.

Disabling shot is always useful if one of your squad gets mind-controlled too.

I routinely use pistols with overwatch on snipers if I've had to move, I have started to move less and try to ensure my squad are always covered. Lost too many groups of guys from either splitting or having the last guy find some aliens with the last action!

Nothing worse than moving your support guy to a safe spot last just to find out he's woken 3 Mutons right next to the squad..

Just finished my impossible playthrough and this is my main complaint with the mechanics, the "monster closet" effect where you ensure you always have the maximum moves available to you before any engagement definitely makes the gameplay more formulaic and slightly boring.

While a squadsight sniper is more useful I'm still considering taking the snapshot on my next playthrough purely to keep the action moving and more interesting.

Completed this on normal difficulty easily enough, every single country was at minimum panic levels. Just focus on getting all the sat's up asap and don't skimp on the airforce. The money just comes rolling in. Don't spend any money on lab's at all, get 2x sat nexus up and 4x Engineering and you've cracked it.

Ignore lasers completely, just go straight for plasma. Apart from pistols, which are totally useless the plasma is a game changer. Use the arc gun to capture all the weapons you need so no need to make them.

Problem with this game is the very poor difficulty settings. The difference between Easy and Normal is hardly noticeable at all. However the jump from Normal to Hard is insane!!! Normal is fairly easy to complete but just give the very first couple of levels a try on Hard! All my shots miss and no matter what cover my soldiers have the aliens with their pistols just hammer my guys, who panic and run off... It's just frustrating and not fun at all.

If you dont build any labs, does it not take forever to research the plasma weapons and that Demon alien jet that you need for the later ufos? I found even with my 2 adjoining labs that it too long to research, but it could have been that I just left it too late.

I started on Normal but had to change it to easy once I got to the first Chryssalids as half my team got wiped out in one hit by them .

Is the dlc worth getting before a second playthrough?

The only real issue I had with this game was the luck factor, I want to now go on classic and then impossible but I got ****ed over several times in the campaign on normal. Classic and Impossible have straight accuracy and crit buffs for aliens and lower % for the player, even with godly tactics it's going to take so much luck.

:(

If you're talking about the slingshot DLC I probably wouldn't bother, it doesn't really add that much, I'd only really pick it up in a steam sale which is what I did.

If you're talking the upcoming Enemy Within expansion then that will add loads of stuff, but no harm in a second playthrough while you wait for that if you've only played once.

I think there's a couple of mods that enable slightly more "fair" AI on higher levels. You can also get a mod that allows you to shoot down enemy abductors before they land (so you typically get more ground missions per month and can make sure that panicking countries have better air cover etc).

I've played through once on normal and almost twice with slingshot aggressive play with assaults is probably the most fun way to go. My assaults had easy 4x the kills of anything else.

For a really exciting early, I thought I'd been sent my preordered code a day early. Got as far as adding the code only to find out it was Lego Batman

I've done the original campaign, is it worth redoing it with the added changes or can / should I just jump into the expansion stuff?

Damn, forgot to start this downloading when I got home from work. Need to wait 2.5 hours on my poor connection, don't think I'll be playing tonight. :(

Ive started again and imo its much harder this time round and also a lot more fun.

snipers are no longer the gods they were, in fact im considering just not bothering with them anymore.

theres loads more stuff to research and build and yet no more sources of income.

the missions come at a much faster pace than before. you will need multiple squads of people as you have zero chance of your "elite" team doing mission after mission.

The AI has got more inteligent, the new units are lethal at first and overall the AI plays like more of a team.

The "meld timer" makes the first few turns very aggresive and fast paced. You have to advance, so you will loose troops.

I'm loving it so far, already played on loads of new maps. Even with just that it feels a lot fresher, never mind all the new enemies and research options.

I agree, also seen lots of new maps. If I had one criticism though, it is that everything comes along a bit quickly now. I usually like to plod along, but you seem to get something new introduced every mission now, without having time to get used to it!

Edit- Argentina close to leaving...so I get a choice of missions in Japan, Germany or USA, all at lowest panic:rolleyes:

Just getting annoyed now tbh. Some very strange things are happening.
