XCOM : Enemy Unknown - by Firaxis Games - Thread

Damn this game sticks it in and breaks it off dont it, my first run ironman/normal i got real far plasma rifles titan armour etc had 2 guys who had been with me almost from the get go, colonels, i get into one landed mission, unidentified UFO, grabbed the high ground colnel snipers poised with laser rifles upgraded scopes everything, cryssalids just flood me out of nowhere there was nothing i could do, tried to retreat to the evac but no one made it.

Rerolled thinking, oh well play like a roguelike and will be much better now, about 6 missions in get pinned down and wiped and this is on NORMAL and im a veteran of xcom ffs!!!

Everyone else seems to be playing and I'm just happy to see my physical copy actally being despatched. :o

Tonight I'm going to play the demo again, for a couple hours, while I patiently wait for the unlock...

Come Friday night, I'll be starting an Impossible Iron Man playthrough, and uploading to Youtube. So anybody who wants to see a total XCom rookie* attempting the ultimate challenge straight off, have a watch ;)

Also if anybody wants a solider named after them, I'm happy to oblige. You'll be dead within the first two missions, most likely :p

*UFO and TFTD veteran, mind ;)

Lasted 92 days before I got defeated.

Was doing well for quite some time but the I lost my best soldiers in one mission.
From there it was just a cascade of failure.

Might try it on normal next time. :P

Later in the game question
anyone found the base at North Pole? If so anyone gone in, is it über hard/the end
Also which aliens drop plasma rifle, so far only found aliens that drop light plasma rifle

badcompany reporting in ;)

Caved in and used a VPN. Really liking it so far. Probably should't have seeing as I'm now playing this instead of doing my Uni work. I'll do it tomorrow... He says

Victory!

I'm pretty disappointed with how short the game was, felt like I was just getting into it, and then its over! :(

Its a step in the right direction, but lots of dumbing down and cut content makes this no more than an 8/10 in my opinion. Still, lots of fun whilst it lasted.

Lots of stats prior to the end credits:

Overall score = 26914 (IRONMAN CLASSIC)
Days Until Victory = 228
Soldiers lost = 14
Soldiers lost to one hit kills = 10 (lol)

Where you from, private badcompany? England? Only steers and queers come from England, and you don't much look like a steer to me!

Heh. You're top of the list, first off the Skyranger ;) I've got to say, the odds don't look good :p

Was this on normal difficulty? Apparently the game is a lot longer on harder settings.

Classic Ironman, I did play the original UFO:EU and TFTD loads when I was young, so didn't find it too tricky.

I also didn't hang around on the tactical maps, I played very aggressively with good results (2 x heavys, 1 x assault, 1 x sniper, 2 x support, 3 of which were PSI experts by the end).

You could easily add on 4-6 hours of play if you were very slow and methodical. I tended to use my assault with run + gun to uncover the aliens, then blast them to pieces from range with my heavies and sniper. Probably why I struggled to capture equipment and aliens! :D

Count me in too, I'll be right behind badcompany all the way...

Alan "Dutch" Schaefer - Heavy weapons, ged to the choppa!! :D

My heavies are useless(although he's been on starting gun till this mission, now has heavy plasma, so I hope to see improvements), even with 60+ % chance, they seem to miss 80% of the time, assault class is the best, back up by double tap sniper, good god, double tap is like god mode.

Yeah, the range on the heavy weapons (MG, laser, plasma) seems to be somewhere in between shotguns and rifles in terms of optimum range, I tried to get up close as much as possible.

Their main strength is when you upgrade their rockets to do extra damage and also give them HEAT rounds, they dish out some fantastic AOE damage. My heavies definitely saved me from wipes so many times due to their rockets.

And yes, the sniper double tap is god mode!

This is my rifle. There are many others like it, but this one is mine. My rifle is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. Without me, my rifle is useless. Without my rifle, I am useless. I must fire my rifle true. I must shoot straighter than my enemy, who is trying to kill me. I must shoot him before he shoots me. I will. Before God I swear this creed: my rifle and myself are defenders of my country, we are the masters of our enemy, we are the saviors of my life. So be it, until there is no enemy, but peace. Amen.

I can't get the vpn to work. I try to connect to a us server and get a "Error 628" tried disabling firewall, data encryption, opening ports... Guess it's for the best, I have work tomorrow :)

Only 24 hours to go. I've played the demo about 15 times now :p Learned some useful stuff about the alien AI.

Like floaters always want to flank, 3 soliders in overwatch and one "bait" soldier, was fun :p Except the one time where they all missed :p

The other thing is aliens when disturbed always run somewhere where you don't have line of sight on them. Thus by placing your soldiers before disturbing, you can herd them exactly where you want them :p

How much of this will work in the real game I don't know, but it's fun trying to work some basic strategy out.
