XCOM : Enemy Unknown - by Firaxis Games - Thread

Amazingly addictive game... I bought and installed this last night. My 'quick test before bed' turned into a 4 hour session!

I may restart though as I seem to have restricted myself by not grinding a little to get a few more satellites. Is there a punishment for grinding the random missions and avoiding any 'priority' researches etc?

No punishment - in fact in can be very useful to delay priority stuff to get some key upgrades (armor, weapons and so on).

Be warned the random mission difficulty will still creep up over time regardless of whether you delay priority research & construction though.

Well I've completed it. Ending was disappointing and I have no desire to play it again as its not going to be that different just frustratingly harder.

Stuck on the last mission, a set of doors haven't opened despite killing everything, it's a known bug over on the 2k forums. Can't be arsed re-starting the mission, I was already running with my support stuck in panic mode - he could do everything except use a medkit :rolleyes:

Classic is not that hard, tbh. I've not tried normal. Impossible was frustrating and I'm not bothering with that again.

After completing on classic I gave normal a go and didn't like it, the hit percentages are just ridiculous. You begin to wonder if you really have a crack team of marines or just some drunk hill billies they picked off the streets.

Normal is a lower difficulty than Classic isn't it or have I been doing it wrong? if so I'm getting worse!
Still loving the game though, I can see me replaying this a lot maybe next time round I'll only select the lesser options in each units talent tree see how I fair then or even try out a mod or two, any good ones I should be aware of?

Yep. Annoys me too.Exposition at the start of the game saying they have put together this amazing group, when in fact they are totally rubbish, can't shoot straight and actually turn around and start shooting each-other over the smallest thing!

Another example of game design not fitting narrative(which is becoming all too common nowadays)

I think the aliens are supposed to just be better, so your soldiers seem inept by comparison.

Im about to finish C/I for the 1st time (previously played on normal with reloads), learnt some harsh lessons during this playthrough (boy did I get punished for some errors on both the tactical and strategic levels) and I cant wait to do it again from a different starting continent.

after some restarts I have found 'the perfect base' 2 steam blocks close together not too deep :D

Thats not perfect, you've cut off your Satellite uplinks from gaining any extra bonuses. Should have not put that power generator there, and had the Uplinks going down in a column.

I would have it like:

OTS-SU-PG||WS-LB-LB
TG-SU-TG||WS-LB-**
**-SU-PG||WS-WS-**
**-SN-**||FD-**-**

Ohhh didn't know you could link downward?

Unbelievable end to this evenings session. :(

Just crashed and burned in a terror mission comprising of the usual horde of Crysallids and with 3 cyber discs crashing the party. Hardly fair for June, especially as the RNG decided to give me only 2 heavies for the entire game, and Rambo had eaten it in early May. :(

After my avatar got one shotted by the final cyber disc I ended that campaign in mild rage.

Start again tomorrow. :D

3 discs? Ouch!

Those terror missions can be such a pain. Ive taken to effectively ignoring the civilians, taking two heavies, nades, and just blowing the crap out of everything.

I usually free the civilians in my immediate area after being caught out by five crysilids who quickly became 8 after turning civilians, 3 of my early game troops got panicked leading to a whole squad being wiped, it was horrific but it was a great sweaty palms moment that few games can match.
