Xenoblade Chronicles

Me and the g/f gonna do awhole day on it tomorrow
luckily she like running around an picking up all the sparkly blue orbs, so I don't ever have to worry about collectopaedia

Have you actually given the game a chance? There's significant battle mechanics that don't even get introduced until 5-10 hours into the game. The final party character doesn't join until 50 hours in.

This is a massive game, but because of that a bit more patience is required before it pays off. Loads of reviews have said the same.

Well, I've spent at least 5hours on it. I'm not a graphics whore but the characters faces just seem to blow away any chance of me getting immersed into the game, they look worse than Final Fantasy X.

I've done about 20 subquests, from taking cookies to a grandson to collecting some items for kids to eat. Just all pointless. The main story has good potential I must admit, and will probably be the reason why I'll try to persevere.

If it helps, the sidequests are all completely unnecessary. It's very possible to complete the game without doing a single one. Levelling happens very quickly from fighting mobs so you never end up underlevelled.

I personally did all the hunt/challenge/collect items ones as 99% of the time i just happened to complete them as i progressed through areas. Also, if the quest doesn't have a red clock next to the name, it means you can come back at any time to complete them, even right at the end of the game. If it DOES have a red clock, there's usually a huge amount of time before the quest becomes inaccessible, and even if you miss it you only lose the money/exp, there are no storyline ramifications. Finally you can also replay the game with your save data, so if you wanted to do a storyline only runthrough you could then follow with a sidequest runthrough straight after. Basically this game accommodates for pretty much every type of RPG player.

I thought the cutscenes were excellent but each to their own.

Just pull her away from them. Use the D-pad to call your teammates over to you and she will follow, when when in a safe place instruct them to attack.

I also used shulks area attack that the monado has in order to keeps the orbs at bay.

But it is the hardest boss fight in the game, I had to level up a few levels above her before I could defeat her.

I never died at the hands of any of the cumpulsorary bosses, there was one named Mechon that i had to come back for as he was just too damn strong!

The final boss was the most difficult for me, as i say i didn't die, but i came very close several times.

what level where you streeteh? i am 72, I know to pull the party towards me, but when im fighting the bitch always pushes one of my characters out into the ether and they are out of my sight, I then have to go in myself to revive and use up all my blue bar reviving to get back out as keep getting toppled/dazed/confused in the stuff
using shulk for cyclone and as main, sharla for debuffs and healing and reyn dumbass ether wader as tank, have tried using melia and fiora for ether attacks but they dont heal enough and its over quicker

I was roughly the same level actually.

I ditched Reyn and Sharla a long time before then, they have far too low a damage/debuff output which means the tougher enemies eventually wear you down. While sharla has stupidly good healing spells, they have relatively long regen. Reyn is constantly taking damage so Sharla will always inevitably run out of abilities after some time, at that point it's pretty much game over. Replacing Reyn with Dunban is a more potent combination for two reasons, 1. Dunban deals much more damage and 2. Dunban rarely takes damage, so Sharla won't run out of healing abilities so often. With that said I ditched Sharla and Dunban towards the end and replaced it with this setup:

I used a Shulk/Fiora/Riki setup.

Shulk was the usual, however i avoided using specials often other than the one that inflicts slow so his auto attacks could build monado gauge. I also used his healing ability as required if anyone needed a topup of health.

Riki is the ailment master. Just equip him with every degen ability he has and he does silly damage. He also has an awesome AOE healing ability which makes him your main healer.

Fiora was the tank + chain attack damage dealer. Equip her with speed armour so her evasion is good and make sure she's got the multi-hit special attack feet armour equipped. Put her at the end of the chain 'trio' and make sure you deal two of the same colour attacks with Shulk + Riki, then use her multi attack special and it deals insane amounts of damage. (100k+ often). Make sure she has the absorb strength ability to further increase her damage output and decrease enemies' and self heal ability. Also ideally you want some form of auto attack health regen crystal as her fast attack pace means she heals herself VERY quickly with one of those equipped. A combination of the self healing ability, auto attack regen and high evasion means she typically can soak up anything most enemies have to offer, and when she starts to falter Riki and Shulk can top up her health.

Had another go at Lorithia today, went with Melia as main, fiora and riki, she beat me again, but I got her down to half hp. Had a bit of free time so put 2 hours in killing all the big telethia in bionis interior, especially the lungs, for big xp, went up to level 75 in the process, went back and absolutely annihilated her in a couple of minutes, without losing hardly any health, just spammed ether attacks with melia and fiora was doing her drain thing, just needed the extra levels.
Good tips about the regen crystals though, I wasnt using them just relying on a healer, got me through no problem up til this boss, with that on fiora, and melias regen buff plus rikis healing makes fights so easy.

Just wish I could get that key from the traders post now

Right I'm finally getting some time on this, just finished up prison island 1st time? As I'm assuming you go back later as lots seem unexplorable atm.

Nice for the characters to finally realise what the faced mechon are after we've known it since near the beginning! :p

Was a nice surprise to actually see the monado change form though, was kinda get bored at looking at the same weapon.

Currently using a party of Shulk, Dunban and Sharla, although as Streeteh advised once Dunbans got some extra AGI he seems to just dodge everything which is pretty sweet.

Still feeling pretty over powered at the moment, the fight with metal face felt less difficult than some of the named mobs i've been coming up against, but still, thats my fault! :p

best game Ive played in a long while, and the end is a bit of a revelation, at some point in the future I will go through it again with my endgame party just to see what is behind the giants treasure door, as I couldnt get the traders key for the last treasure before I finished the game

Bought a Wii, mainly just for this and I'm really disappointed. After playing Tales of Symphonia on my Gamecube for hours on end until I finished it, and not being able to really get into Tales of Vesparia I thought this was the ONE to give me the experience I had playing Tales of Symphonia.

Not so. The battle system is not to my taste, getting the hang of chains is just too much hard work. The characters are just the stereotypical JRPG ones, the graphics are no where near as good as I was lead to believe( the characters faces are crap at best).

Side quests garbage, as are the collectibles scattered all over the place.

Waste of a lot of money, unless Resident Evil 4 does turn out to be better then the Gamecube classic using the remote... I shall see. Got Zelda and Monster Hunter too, as well as Chrono Trigger (over the moon with this on the big screen).

Thumbs down for this title from me.

My mate tried this recently too...although not on Wii... just to see what it was like as he said if there is enough games he might grab a cheap Wii.

Echoed the same opinion as you to be honest. Didn't sound like anything amazing considering there isn't exactly a shortage of JRPGs to start with.
Mind you, that market in general has been shocking lately so an average game will seem amazing compared to the last few years of JRPG releases.

Still, everything I see about it still makes me want to try for myself. Maybe i'll do the same as him just to give it a go without taking the plunge into getting a Wii as there is currently only 2 other games I'd even think about trying.

For those that missed this gem, stock seems to be reappearing. I recommend any JRPG fan to give it a try, it really is a wonderful game imo and still strong in my memory months after completing it.
