XFX 8800GTX power problem

Hi, I've just tried to install my XFX 8800 GTX today and discovered that I don't have the correct power connectors!! this card requires 2 x 6-pin connectors and I only have one.

What a muppet! I never thought to check PSU requirements (even though it *specifically* warned me in the product description) as I only bought a new PSU about 2 years ago. My PSU is only a Seasonic 430w. The specs says it requires 500w and recommends 600w.

I've had a quick search on the forums and there seems to be the odd post here or there that suggests that, depending on the setup, 400w is ample for 88000GTX. I've also seen that you can buy adapters from 4 pin molex to the 6-pin connector that I need.

I don't plan on running SLi, OC'ing hard, or running a huge number of peripherals...

Does any one have any advice for me? can I get away with the adapters or do I need a new PSU and if so what one should I get please? (without breaking the bank)

i think you should be good... just grab a molex -> PCIe adapter and you ought to be ok

i saw a link somewhere of someone running that card on 380... i wouldn't recommend it, but if you cut back on the parts and peripherals, you ought to be fine...

Ahhh... discovered why it didn't ship with an adapter - I just found a loose note in the box which says:

"XFX does not support the use of 4-pin to 6-pin power cable converters for these graphics cards. They are designed to work with high performance power supplie with 6-pin PCI Express connectors"

Guess that's answered my original question too. Cosmic :(

Load of rubbish that as an adapter will work, i bet theres a fair few 8800 GTX owners on here using them, as the adapters are for if you don't have any, or not enough already on your PSU. :)

Thats just like what EVGA are saying about the 9800 GX2, they wont supply an 8 Pin adapter with them, as they say they could cause problems, catch fire etc..., you have to have a PSU with the proper dedicated 8 Pin, yet theres BFG 9800 GX2's working fine with 8 Pin adapters, as they do supply them in the box with the cards. :D

Im sure the adapter would work just fine cus Ive seen many used the adapter to power their GTX :)

No, as how would they know you used an adapter.:)

They do work, as its like i said, they are for if you don't have any already on your PSU, or you don't have enough, its why every other brand supplys them.

Actually, I'm inclined to believe it is rubbish because the warning goes on to read: "...requires an SLi type power supply as deatailed on www.slizone.com"

Sounds like a blatant plug to me (excuse the pun)

In terms of warranty invalidation ~ surely it would be difficult for the engineer to establish 100% which power connections had been used.

8800GTX need 2x6pins PCIE cable from PSU directly meaning you need 2 of PCIE cable from PSU to card - no adapter - I used old XFX Nvidia Geforce 8800GTX Extreme and plugged 2 cables that work fine - big card are hungry for power so you need good PSU like Thermaltake Toughpower like my own one with 1000w PSU. 500w or more would be enough for your card.

ths card only need 2x6pins directly from PSU --- Ive used this one before sold out as Im now 2xGF9600GT XXX and plugged 1x6pins into each card (9600GT only 1 of 6pins)...

anyway let us know if you getting on with adapter or not.

I'm running an XFX 8800GTX using an adaptor with a Corsair VX450 PSU.

System is

C2D 3.0 @ 3.6
4 x 1GB DDR2
2 x Sata HD
1 x IDE DVDRW
Soundcard
NIC
4 x USB devices
4 x 120mm Fans

Its all running fine and the PSU fan does not even run up whilst gaming.
