XIM3 round the corner (mouse and keyboard support)

Generally not in Forza any more, although if you look at the people using pads they tend to have some form of addition to their controllers to make them more sensitive and accurate like kontrol freeks, which essentially means the game overcompensates for having a pad (the game essentially adds steering assists when you put in a controller, a pad is nowhere near gradual enough to handle well on a realistic engine, just try and run LFS with a 360 pad to get an idea of what I'm talking about, lock-to-lock and understeer everywhere).

This just went into its beta.

The XIM3 beta program has begun!

Over the next few days, the beta testers will start receiving their XIM3 beta devices. I've attached a picture of what these devices look like. The board and LCD have been mounted in a temporary enclosure for the purpose of the beta. I'd like to emphasize that these are temporary enclosures. :) The real professionally designed enclosures are just about done. The industrial design firm I've contracted has done an amazing job. I'll definitely be sharing pictures of the real enclosure the closer we get to launch.

I've also included a demonstration video of the beta device. This time it's Modern Warfare 2 on Sniper Fi (Special Ops). Like the Halo 3 "Bird Snipe" video I posted before, it's all aiming (no player movement) to show off XIM3's precision and micro-aiming capability. The MW2 Smart Translator is used which produces responsive and tight aim with zero configuration requirements.

The individuals chosen for the beta range from seasoned XIM2 gamers to those who have never even considered playing on the Xbox with something other than the standard controller. I'm not going to announce the names of those in the beta group. Nor can they talk about the device -- they have all signed strict confidentiality contracts.

The duration of the beta program is unknown at this time. The hardware and firmware the beta testers are receiving are very close to what I'd consider production quality. But, the point of the program is for the testers to put the device through its paces to uncover (hopefully) some compatibility or other serious issues I haven't seen. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing what they come up with. :)

Looking a lot more impressive then the XIM2. All my ex-PC friends are getting these now..bit annoying but hopefully it will bring them up to my level :p

Fortunately this thing will never be mainstream enough to make a significant difference to anybodies online experience of the current COD games, as for the arguments of "You wouldn't use a control pad with Rock Band" of course you wouldn't seeing as it's designed to be used with plastic instruments.

Luckily for me I'm on PS3 which means it's even less likely that people are going to be using keyboards and mice against me, and if they are, well I'll just have to get better with the joypad.

you'd hope that they bring out KB+M support in the future for consoles officially, and then just have different servers, meaning the only people to splash the cash on things like this are the hardcore sad ****s who feel the need to do better than everyone without even having a level playing field.

LOL.. can of worms bring this thread back from the dead..

The rage shown by people at the merest hint of having an XIM in some games has been getting laughable, If I've been on a very infrequent killing spree, I find myself quietly saying "This XIM is flipping brilliant", then await the mass of negative tirades, when in actually fact I got lucky and am using a standard controller..

:)

I suggest you actually use one, and then you'l know why everyone is raging about it.

The good news is, i got a reply from MajorNelsen about it, said MS are aware and want to do something to keep the playing field level and to watch this space.

So hopefully something will be done.

XIM3 removes deadzone points too? great, its basically impossible to compete with even an average XIM2 user.
Then add in being able to boost sensitivity past the 360's max, snap-aiming and you have monster.

I'm not interested in in playing online. But i want a Xim3 so that i can stick my G27 wheel on my 360 and play Race On, Fonza 3 and PGR4.

And use M+K for Halo games (again, not interested in online, i got burnt out on deathmatch with Quake3 and Unreal games)

Why is that such a crime?

Do you have a link to that?

MS cant really do anything about it other than releasing there own M+kb peripheral set. As far as I understand the Xbox reads the Xim3 as an xbox controller, it can't tell the difference.

Can't they go directly after the company for bypassing the security chip? Someone mentioned that in another thread.

I wouldnt pretend to know US law, but in this country, you can buy jammers to stop police speed guns/speed cameras getting you and are sold as garage door openers (despite everyone knowing what they are really for). He could market it as something un xbox releated. Especially since these things are more underground, anyone looking at an Xim3 will know what the device does and seek it out themselfs.

Really interested in one of these, I've tried for years to get the hang of using a Joypad in FPS but i just can't. I would love to play games like Halo as well as i play FPS games on PC. If i go online on XBOX and play an FPS on a Joypad it's no fun as i get completely owned!!!

The XIM offers a hope to people like me :)

It's no fun for the pad players when XIM users play, as it's vastly unfair.
