XP-120 Hotter than stock cooler

those scratches came on the heatsink when i got it but they dont actually come into contact with the ihs.

EDIT: im kicking my self now. one time i applied AS5 to the heatsink and the IHS and i booted up converted a film turned off and the As5 in the middle of the heatsink was still as smooth as it was when i applied it. ( it hadnt touched the IHS, the AS5 on both the IHS and the HEatsink base handnt touched in the centre

ive got the black platic mounthing thing. why do i need to buy something extra for it to fit?
EDIT: it was just the centre all the sides had been squished so this has to mean it is just badly concaved?

the website doesnt say i need a backplate... just says my PCIE will be blocked lol. which is true i need a fair bit of preasure to push the heatsink down. i think the clips/mounting bracket are fine. i suppose i will find out tomorrow once ive lapped the heatsink.

if i lap it till is smooth and completely flat. will is till have the correct ammount of preasure?

well ive instructed my dad to get me 200 400 800 1200 and 1600 wettodry he said they dot do 2000 which is used in some of the lapping guides. i will let you know more tomorrow about 6 o'clock i would imagine i'll try it out. thanks for all your help. i have rotten luck with computers :(

Started to lap my XP-120 about an hour and a half ago. there are pics on previous posts on what it looked like before i took a picture when i first started to take off some metal.

you can see that it wasnt flat in the slightest. i kept going with the lapping process and to get it completely flat i had to go right down to the copper. this is a pic of the final product. i will install the processor when i get home and post some results.

which do you want first? the good news or the bad news?

okay the goodnews first. i love how the base looks now. (why dont they ship like this????) and its lowered my temps by a good 10'c

now the badnews!!!! the temps are near my stock cooler just a little higher?

so to re-cap lapping your heatsink will gain you some degree's difference and mine still doesnt work. im getting as high as 48'c load. which is still higher than my stock cooler. the heatpipes on the heatsink arent getting hot so basically im no further forward after about an hours work lapping.

how much AS5 should i be putting in there?

and does anyone have any ideas on what could be causing the bad contact?

IM BACK! lol again. im sick of seing this bloody cooler now... i put a very small ammount of as5 on the heatsink sat it in took it out and took what was on the heatsink off so there is just enough to cover the scratched in the base (very small ammount) im idleing at 34-35 degrees. which is still more that my stock cooler. im just about to give up and throw it in the bin? what you guys think? heatpipes still arent getting hot... i might take off the fan and see what happes

HELP me please

your not kidding. its just a standard stock cooler form amd just a big chunk of metal with some fins?? and a tiny fan... nothing special. this is supposed to be a performace heatisnk is it not? and should out perform the standard cooler?

well im going back to my dad's tomorrow i was going to re-lap my xp-120 and sell it but i think i'll just keep it. so you want to see a lapped Stock amd cooler out-perform an XP-120 by more than it already does? okay lol. i'll post back tomorrow when i get some temps.

all the tests ive done are with the case door open with a 120mm blowing in and 120mm sucking out and the amber on the heatink.

EDIT: and if this was the case then both heatsinks would be suffering. but its just the XP-120 thats got the higher temps. which ive decided to keep as ive gotten them down to about 46 load

Im currently doing some tests in a relativly cool room. both heatsinks are performing equally now. i will lap the Stock heatink.

All of the following tests wgere done in the same room at the same teperature with the case door closed.

the XP-120 Idles at 32 and peaks at 42-44 - Lapped
the Stock Idles at 30 and peaks at 42-44 - Stock
the Stock Idles at 27 and peaks at 39-41 - Lapped

Pics.

it is actually. its got one of the spring clip things. push the handle down and it locks it in place. the xp-120 isnt as secure as the stock. so will taking some material off the bottom of my mounting bracket make some difference

and to answer your question... does a few degrees make that much difference, YES the stock cooler is beating my XP-120 and it shouldnt.

i will try the mounting bracket idea later today i think. Thanks
