XP SP3 gives speed boost

a 10% speed boost on one benchmark doesnt mean anything really, if you run the same benchmark multiple times it usually has small differences and there couldve being more processes running on the sp2 machine etc. 1gb of ram is abit low for vista which is probably the cause of vista being that amount slower, its like comparing xp to 98 on a computer with 128mb ram.

Giving it a go, cheers. :)

Edit, followed the links instructions, SP3 appears as a critical update!

Could'nt be easier, interesting to see if Windows collapses now.......:o:D

Don't know why people install Beta version if their system is running ok. Just a waste of time until they release the gold edition.

I never said my PC was running ok! ;)

I often run beta graphics drivers, to try to get my aged cards to run BF2 well on my pc's, if SP3 don't work, I'll just do a re-format, anything I need on my PC is backed up on seperate drives and I have nothing bar the time it takes to do a re-install of windows & the programs I use regularly, to lose. :) - I have 3 other pc's that are used for browsing, downloading & gaming when the lads come round, my machine gets Windows skins, game mods, hardware mods - whatever I throw at it. My machine rarely works properly in either hardware or software form, but thats all down me constantly twiddling with the OS and the side panel never being on the tower for more than a day at a time... The other 3 PC's all runs faultlessly bar windows update & new graphics (WHQL) drivers ,I never touch them.

Anyway imo, pratting about with your PC & OS & trying to get it to run better is all whats it is about. Computing would'nt be computing without user inspired major system crashes & hardware failures -would it? :p;):D

In my opinion thats what real inside Beta testers are for.
Anybody who downloads things like this without them officially releasing it the feedback won't be used anyway.

Sure & I don't disagree with you, I'm not doing this pro or against the beta test program, its nothing to do with me (and, had they asked I doubt I'd have had the time to really get involved had I wanted to) I'm just doing this for myself, to see if it works, not to mention, wind up my mate - I'll ask him what he thinks of SP3 & show him my thus patched PC - who I know will go then home and wonder why the update isn't showing for his version of Windows! :D - I've primed one of the other PC's with the reg hack, so I'll just let him "try windows update" on my other PC & let him see for itself it working.....

No doubt, he'll have the last laugh when my PC crashes due to this pre-release service pack.... :o

agree with you 110% its what i love doing also, when not playing games, im always mucking about with something on this pc, good job i have my laptop for serious stuff and the server for keeping all my data on.

Other half is always wondering what i am doing with my main rig lol :D

All part of the fun, trying latest drivers and software and such

Thing is though its beta for a reason, don't get me wrong I have nothing againts that type of user who likes to play, I used to do it myself but you will sharp learn when you relise unless your a real beta tester its a waste of time because there still will be problems with it. I still might download it and put it onto a vmware image but theres no visual enhancments only whats out now in hotfixes from sp2. This don't even include ie7 and wmp11.

From what I've seen (I've had a good look) I can't see anything different from my previously bang upto date install, which is all I downloaded it for tbh, just to have a look.

That said, Battlefield 2 seems to load maps faster than it did before which I'm probably imagining.... :o

If it subsequently screws up I'll re-format as its on the to do list anyway - again, another much quoted issue - do you or don't you regularly re-format, I do for the reasons I've already stated (i.e. to fix my previous OS crash!) but that said, a re-format has been on the to do list for about 13 months now, so I'm not doing too bad! :D

I'm probably just determined to try & kill this install of Windows, which despite my best efforts, I haven't finished off - yet! :)

Do you format all the time or you use images? I got a acronis image, which restores my pc in 4 mins (3GB). If people have installed it and all is good I could give it a try and restore my pc if needed. No hard feelings though *shakes hand*.

ok going back to the original xp versus vista speed comparisons :)

Just upgraded one of my 2 rigs (identical except for the cpu's, one x2 4200+, one opty 175 so basically the same) - for me the main applications perform as fast or faster than xp (went 64 bit vista) in my experience, 3ds max 2008 is roughly a third faster (down to 64 bit in my opinion). However the os feels slower due to all the fancy animations etc they have on each window, especially if you've tweaked xp to your liking etc.

Never tried imaging, just got Windows on my SATA drive and my IDE channels full of various capacity drives with all of my important stuff (anything from 100gb of films to all of my Battlefield 2 patches , family photo's - all sorts.)

Not ideal, but anything with fast loading required, I install on the SATA, which is partitioned with a relatively small windows partition, and everything else onto the higher capacity IDE drives, I usually just delete the dead Windows partition, re-format it (always do a quick format!) & get out my XP disc, set the machine to boot from CD & trudge through.....

I suppose a simple image makes sense and I see the advantage but not too sure where to start :o

I see something else going onto that rarely completed "to do" list! :D

The thin straw that was SP3 possibly curing my machine's habit of total lock up (regardless of browsing / gaming / idle) followed by Blue screen (NV4_disp) ,loud high pitch from speakers - no matter what graphics card it's got, Beta driver or not -was a vain one Grr! - Bloody Hobby!:rolleyes::D

No hard feelings either mate, my ramblings on this forum are often not taken as I intended. in the Motors Forum! that said, I do myself few favors! :o :D

*shakes hand & leaves a pint in behind the bar * :)

I installed it, got an oobe error on startup. Went after first reboot though. Remote desktop has been updated by the looks of it too, thats the only visual thing I have saw.

Seems faster here mate, although "seems" compared to me getting out my stopwatch & timing things is where I've always drawn the line! :o:D

Battlefield 2 is definitely loading maps quicker, I swear it! - I may even have to cross my own line & time it to be sure!! ;)

I'm hardly cutting edge here mind, A64 3000+ (Stock atm) 2.5GB DDR 400 & an AGP 7600GS 256MB

I have tweaked my delays etc in xp so it is more responsive for my tastes, I can't do this (or more precisely haven't found a way to do it yet) in vista so for me it does seem slower doing menu's etc.

Goto ControlPanel run System, Advanced System Settings, Advanced Tab, Performance settings... Visual Effects Tab.

Let me know how you get on.

Why - all that does is disable the fancy stuff, it has nothing to do with responsiveness of the os, the speed the windows open/shut with the fancy stuff on isn't an issue, that's not really any different, its more the physical menu's being slow which in turn slows me down - for example in xp you can adjust (tweak ui) the menu speed, none of the adjustments in the effects tab can change that.
