I've got Yamaha RS202D & Dali SPEKTOR 2 that I use in a small office/mancave. I bought them on a bit of a whim as I wasn't sure if I'd use them much, but I really enjoy them for gaming & TV/movies. I was thinking I could do with a bit more bass, however not sure I could add this without changing the amp as it doesn't seem to have a bass output connection?

PC is connected via 3.5mm to RCA and TV is connected via Optical to RCA.

If the Yamaha amp isn't compatible, could anyone suggest an alternative amp and also a good "mid range" bass unit?

The low level sub in via an RCA connection isn't the only way to connect a sub.

Have a look at the BK range of subs. They use a parallel speaker wire connection as well as low-level RCA. You have a choice then of either as both connections are featured on their subs. Other brands do something similar too.

Ye parallel connection is very high resistance, so it is virtually invisible as far as the amp is concerned. This avoids the usual problems associated with driving two sets of speakers from one set of speaker terminals.

Take a look at the Gemini II sub from BK as a starting point. It goes deep enough to fill in as low as you'd get from small floorstanders such as Dali Spektor 6.

Gemini II is under £250. Using this or an alternative sub from BK or another brand with a high level input would give you the extra bass you want without the cost of changing the amp.

What does that mean exactly, are you saying I would double up the connection to the amp with one of the Dali speakers?

Depends on the sub. With my svs sb12+ if I was using high level I'd use left and right.

But if I had a bk I'd use the neutrik cable which has three cables.

It's a old model but the svs sb12+ is a great sub when used for hifi it has quite a few useful features, which are placing on most subs..

High pass on high and low level inputs
High quality metal speaker binding posts
Room compensation
One channel peq
High and low level stereo inputs and outputs

In answer to some of the previous questions:

The high level connection uses both the left and the right amp speaker feeds. There's one ground connection shared for then two channels, then the left and right positive signal feeds are summed to mono to drive the sub. Three connections in total.

My budget is around £200 and I would like something relatively narrow due to where I'll be placing it.

Would this be compatible?

Nope.

That just has the regular low-level input on an RCA socket, and so you'd need to change the amp in order to use that sub.

If your total budget is £200, and that's got to both fund an amp change and buy a sub or buy a sub with a high-level input, and that sub has to be slimline, and you're expecting it to be up to par as a music sub, then I am afraid you're **** out of luck.

The sorts of subs that are slimline and make the grade as a music sub don't have high-level inputs and are very likely out of your price league even second-hand. (KEF HTB-2, circa 2007).

Your biggest hurdle is size. It narrows the product choice quite savagely.

Thanks for the info so far. I think in such a small office I may be overreaching here. A better option may be to upgrade the Dali speakers at some point, although I do think they sound great and just lack a little bit of bass in certain moments, like movie scenes where you get that effect sound when slow motion scenes are being played out.

Overall I'm pretty content with the system and my idea for improvement might be a bit of a cash cow with little gain. :)

I didn't do anything with this, but have now moved the setup to a larger room and again interested in upgrading the sound.

I would be happy to change the amp as 2.1 from the Yamaha unit probably isn't enough, and hoping to add some additional speakers. I suppose what I'm looking for is a new system spec where I might retain the Dali's. :)

Budget is £1k

The best choice of amp in the budget appears to be the Denon AVR-X2700H at around £630. If so, would £370 be a decent budget in order to pick something up to compliment the Denon + Dali's?

If your looking to go full 5.1 £1k is a pretty tight budget but here's what I think would be worth a look...

Your Dali Spektor 2 for front channel
Dali Spektor 1 £179 for rear channel
Dali Spektor Vokal £179 for center Channel
Q Acoustics 3070S £199 Subwoofer
Yamaha RXV4A £449 Receiver
Total £1006

If your willing to stretch the budget then the Denon Receiver and a better sub (REL T5i is available for £399 at the mo as REL have launched a new model) would be a step up. Better speakers will need a much bigger budget, for example if you use your Spektor's as rear channels but went for Dali Opticon's as your front they would be £349.

Decisions, decisions

Just checking back in, this must be my longest research period for anything I've ever bought. :p

With Black Friday imminent, I thought I might see if I can sniff out a deal on an AV receiver that I'm happy to run with only the 2 Dali Spektors and then pick up the rest of the system after Xmas.

Is the Denon AVR-X2700H still the best option in the £600-700 price range?

I'm starting to get a little concerned that I'm diddling so long that newer models have come along - especially when I'm seeing low stock levels which may mean superseded?

I have the REL T5i in my 2.1 system. I found my Focal Aria 906 speakers just needed a bit more low end. Hooked up the T5i and it transformed the sound. Blends in so naturally. Once dialled in it just sounds like you have great full range stand mount speakers.

I bought mine a couple of years ago. Mint secondhand unit for £299. Money well spent.

You've got a 2.0 music-based system. I really wouldn't opt for a Denon if you hope to continue enjoying music to the same standard.

Aside from running hot* the Denons are good for movies but music is not their strong suit. Go Yamaha.

.* look in to this as several other Denon users have reported issues with the amps cutting out due to overheating

Ok, time to get the trigger pulled and maybe even a Black Friday deal!

I'm going to add a subwoofer to the current 2.1 and see how I feel with it added with the Yamaha RS202D & Dali SPEKTOR 2. I'd like to hedge my bets a bit and buy something that I could use with a 5.1 in future if I do decide to upgrade the amp.

I can't find the Rel T5i in stock so I'm assuming it's eol? Could anyone suggest a decent alternative in that price range e.g. around £350?

Edit: actually, is this the new model? https://www.richersounds.com/rel-t-zero-mk3-gloss-black.html

Edit 2: Would this unit compliment the Spektors? Dali C8D Subwoofer Black Ash https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07CHW742N/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_fabc_EBEE9K020NA7KQY1BP1K

Also, the speaker cable I'm currently using is linked below. It's too think to double up one of the Spektors and the subwoofer so I need an alternative quality cable that is thinner. Again, any suggestions welcome.

Current (too think) cable: KabelDirekt - Pure Copper Stereo... https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01C79XV5W?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
