Yay, another 330D issue :D

Knowing this issue reasonably well I'm saying LPP but dont rule out the MAF. Should be readily easily to diagnose too. Unplug it. This will set the ECU to default map and will let the turbo spool up normally.

Both poor MAF and LPP can cause non start, as can crank sensor, cam sensor and a host of other BMW sensor goodness!

The car never enters 'limp home mode' it is physically restricted by the dead sensor or pump. It doesn't say "oh crap, i'm broke, lets limit the car to 4k rpm" it just physically can't rev past 4k rpm. LPP or MAF won't trigger limp mode and cam or crank whilst driving would mean sudden engine lock up anyway.

The reason I'm not so sure its LPP is because you would have had a fair amount of diesel in the tank making the LPPs job almost pointless especially once moving. It would have been much more likely to die with 1/4 to half (or less) in the tank.

Hope you get it sorted anyway.

interesting, it has just over 1/4 of a tank now.
but then i only drove it 4 miles from work, it started at work, wont start out at home (started twice at work iirc).

LPP is basically a motor. LIke any other the brushes and commutator wear down over time. If the motor stops spinning at a point where the brushes are in contact then it will spin again (meaning pump). If it doesn't stop in contact, then it won't spin, meaning no pump, no start.

AA method used to be "tap it" with a hammer (its under the rear seat squab I think). This is a good get you home method as long as the fuel level does not drop too far (the HP Pump can pick up from a full tank even with the LPP disconnected).

They are fairly easy to replace if you have some spanner skillz but the pump itself is not that cheap.

Ok, well you can hear the pump and it is is getting something up (took the pipe off the filter and a little diesel was coming through).
Unable to get anything from the diagnostics, the AA stuff has nothing for diesels at all! Generic connection pickup up nothing.

Lucero - are you saying that putting say £20 of diesel in (which would put it back up to about 2/3rds), might temporarily sort the issue? (of course i would then need to keep it topped up)?

Going to have a look now for an Indy in north london - anyone have any recommendations? (though I can have the car towed wherever).

Yes. Its worth a try after all and in theory will cost you nothing to at least confirm the diagnosis. AA should have had something back, not even a CANbus error?

Pressure faults will show up when connected to BMW kit, MAF failure won't.

Do you have some easy start to hand? If you do, unclip the intake pipe to the EGR assembly and fire a squirt in there while someone cranks it. If it starts and runs then you can rule out your cam / crank sensor AND LPP. If it turns over then dies then its either fuel starvation or electrical (cam / crank).

Nah, it wouldnt connect at all. was saying that it wasnt connecting.
no easy start :/

i can get AA to tow it anywhere, so it might as well goto a garage tbh, as thats where its gonna end up anyway!

bit too far to get to work from there.
it will be towed to Beemer Redeemer in Bristol, I'll then go work in cardiff for a few days while its being sorted :]

tried knocking the tank last night. got a small flow of fuel through it, nothing much though.

seriously tempted to grab some diesel on the way home tonight and put it in. it worked twice 4 miles before not working on the next start! not like that would have burned much.
would mean that it could be taken home tonight, much easier than being towed!

I was going to suggest taking it to Promotive off junction 28, but as you are already going to Bristol...

yeah, my old one went to promotive a few times, i live in bristol (when not in london) though, so this place is easier for me :]
