Yessssss! Now it's good news about the Vulcan..

I've heard that said before, is there a bigger story behind why they were scared of it or is it just a myth? :)

Well - the American's were scared of it...

One requested permission to land at JFK
JFK responded with "Where are you? We can't see you?"
Vulcan responded with "25k above you and circling"

They had flown through the US air defences, over Washington DC, photographed a parade and then flew on to New York....

The US were not happy with that. :D

Photo's taken today - 455
Selected the best - left with 34... Not all are of the Vulcan. ;)

As were the Argies. ;)

Well - we did somehow manage to fly Vulcans across the world to drop bombs on them....

...and completely fail to cause significant damage *but thats another story...*

So they dropped 21 bombs and only one of them clipped the runway. That wasn't the point. It had far more effect as a psychological weapon both as a morale booster for our side but also to show the Argentinians that we still had the capability to deliver that sort of punch at that distance.

Yes, but the psychological impact was huge.
We did the impossible and flew Vulcans all the way to the Falklands and dropped bombs on them.
Next stop mainland Argentina.

Only one Vulcan made it to the falklands and it took 17 (IIRC) other Vulcans and Victors in an amazing air to air refueling ballet to get it from Accension (sp?) to there and it very nearly did not make it back.

i assume that's 25 Km (82-something feet), because 25k feet isn't very high (for aircraft) in which case the story is false because the Vulcan has a ceiling height of 62,000 feet, which is 19Km

It was a logistical nightmare, but somehow they pulled it off.

Meh, thats all well and good but if you ask me the only good thing about aeroplanes is they take you to altitude, a perfect time to bail out. There is no such thing as "a perfectly good aeroplane". ;)

Just ordered myself a copy along with Sharkey Wards 'Sea Harriers over the Falklands'.

Some interesting reading while I wait for first flight. :D

I bought Vulcan 607 last weekend in our local Asda - I have to say I'm only on Chapter 11 but its a cracking read, I'm dying to know what happened to the crippled Vulc in the opening chapter though
