Ronaldo
Maradonna
I would agree with you that they were all against better oppo, but the only goal that I would say is better is the Ronaldo one where he ran from the half way line for Barcelona and beat five players or something (assuming thats the one you mean).

Not that special; went past about 2 players and the shot was deflected in, good goal but nowhere near as good as the others mentioned.

And your forgetting Barnes's goal vs Brazil (plus many more he got for Liverpool) and the Owen goal vs Argentina.

The reason Ronaldo's was great was because of the opposition, we were awful that game and Ronaldo was the only player performing. We managed to beat Fulham at Craven Cottage which a lot of top teams struggle, he ran past 2, but actually beat 4 players and smashed it into the bottom corner. In terms of beating people it wasn't as good as the others, but because of the moment and importance of that goal it's up there.

I did genuinely forget about Barnes' and Owen's goals though.

Messi is undoubtedly lazy; in the Liverpool games last year, both he and Ronny literally waited on the half way line every time we were on the attack..

I don't think he's lazy, I think he's ordered to stay up in attack by the manager. Same, last barca match I was at, himself and Roni never come back to defend, manager must reckon it's just not their job.

Mate of ours who isn't really into football (he's a Leeds fan) came away with the impression that Ronaldinho is: "fat and he doesn't track back".

Presume manager wants to maximise their attacking potential. Besides, I can't see the likes of Messi making too many last-gasp crunching tackles without getting injured.

Well if that is actually the case then the manager should be sacked, we knocked them out the cl because of there lazyness.

Simply sublime from Messi, shame he's a cheat.

Depends on what your definition of cheat is really. I think you will find 99% of players 'cheat' in some way or another but I wouldn't go around calling every player a cheat. Some players have different beliefs, someone once said it is only cheating if you get caught ;)

I already said I'd take Kaka out. I would definitely put Ramos at 5th then, he was awesome last season.

Ronaldo has improved incredibly every season, I dare say if he went to Spain he'd just end up embarassing people.

Last season he improved a hell of a lot as his performances showed but in the other seasons imo he had bee very hit and miss, once he got 'must show off before passing or shooting' thing out of his head he has turned alright eh. And yes he would do well in Spain, as you will see in a couple seasons time ;)

How often do players like C.Ronaldo, Henry or RvN get back to help and defend? Those two players are strikers not midfielders so they aren't required to defend, in an ideal world you would like them to help but much of Barca's deadly football comes when they can break quickly and those two are high up the pitch

You knocked them out because this season they didn't have that same desire of the previous season and your lot played well. That crisp passing, fluid movement and real desire to just keep scoring goals and destroying teams was gone. Had you played Barca with the same system and players a year earlier they would have beaten you as they were desperate for the CL and gave it their all.

That was also the comments made by large sections of the Barcelona support at the start of the last season.

Punching a ball in the back of the net a'la Maradonna will get you labelled that. For all the greatness Maradonna had he is known by millions around the world for being a cheat. Messi is following the very same path, just with less ability.

I don't doubt he will be in Spain in a couple of seasons. He doesn't owe us anything as it is. Fans of other football teams say this to rile us clearly, but it doesn't bother us :).

Actually, up until the 05/06 season RVN did track back all the time and help, it's when he became 'lazy' that we sold him. As for Ronaldo, he's our quickest break, so we leave him forwards and clear our positions towards him as he's a good target man, however, Ronaldo does also help cover the overlap at RB when required.

Liverpool won because they played better, they got through on credit, not because the other team played poorly. Credit where it's due.

I'd disagree.

For me, there are 5 wonderkids in the world.

1) Ronaldo
2) Kaka
3) Fabregas
4) Rooney
5) Messi

And yes, that's my order too.

For me it's really hard to say how many wonderkids there are in the world, because I don't watch South American football. All the players you listed (including Ramos) play for massive european clubs so of course get a lot of exposure. But in the Brazillian/Argentinian league there may well be some incredibly talented kids I just haven't seen enouugh of. Note that many of the South American 'wonderkids' like Kaka, Messi, Ronaldo (the proper one) etc came over to Europe before they were full established on the world stage. Or in other words not considered true superstars until we got to see them playing every other week.

Of course, Some Might Say that to be a true wonderkid, a player would have gleaned enough exposure through their national team. Not necessarily with Brazil or Argentina given how strong their player pool is.

So because others don't track back that makes it ok then?

Also when your playing a 4-3-3 then you need the 2 wide attackers (wingers) to get back otherwise you get over-run in when defending, especially when sides have got attacking fullbacks.

Rubbish, they left players up-field expecting us to sit back and defend and we ended up controlling the midfield and took the game to them, with Finnan causing them lots of problems because of Ronaldinho not getting back and helping the fullback.

Ronaldo DID cheat and DOES cheat for Portugal. However, for Man Utd he doesn't, last season his temprament was nothing short of outstanding. As I said, Man Utd do have cheats in the team, but Ronaldo isn't one of them.

Oh my goodness, I can't believe you said that. Let me guess, you:

  • are a Man Yoo fan
  • are smoking a lot of crack these days
  • have a guide dog named Christiano

Wonderfully talented player, but he dives in practically every match. Watch the video. Why did you not want to watch past the first clip?

Because the first clip was a stone wall penalty.

I'm not a Man United fan and I know Ronaldo cleaned up his act this season. I think Fergie gave him a boot up the backside for it and he learnt to take the hits and not go down at every chance. He's still by no means an angel but if you're suggesting he hasn't improved his ways then you're wrong.

Yeah a few people have said that, it certainly looks like he has ordered Messi and roni to stay up, even for corners, even Etoo was tracking back. But he's the manager that won the Spanish League and the CL for them so they're not going to sack him for being overly attacking - especially not at barca.

I think you knocked them out because you defended better than they did - Bellamy scoring from a header inside the box? Belletti is a wonderful attacking player but a defender he is not. Still, if that Ronaldinho shot in Anfield that hit the post had gone in they would have gone through, it was that close, but Barca were fairly poor by their own standards over those two matches.

Yeah it definitely looks like Fergie had a word with him but he still hasn't cut it out. Makes me wonder if Fergie is implicitly condoning it, if it gets a result.

This thread should be closed, it's gone way off topic and full of nonsense like this comment:

What are you basing this assumption on? And please don't say a video on youtube because if it is, discussion is over. I could make a 3 minute video dedicated to John O'Shea and make him look like a world class player but it doesn't make it so.

I am a Man Utd fan, but the rest of the post is ********. You are also clearly another blinkered fan.

I have never used the forum ignore feature on here before, but I am not far off unleashing hell on SA, soon there will only be the Man Utd lads, Baz, Anderson, daz.wallace, Gilly, andybtsn, HangTime, kkd and a couple of others :(.
