YouFibre

On support chat trying to get a replacement router.
The eero is garbage and getting worse.

Gf can no longer take teams calls.
And support says the signal is unstable.
The technician can even see issues on my laptop.

She's 2m from the router.

Garbage considering the old talk talk 3 year old router was absolutely flawless
YouFibre provided me with the rather generic looking "Arris" router for my GB connection. Although initially worried, as everyone else seemed to be getting the more recognised Eero - it has been absolutely flawless.

Eero is the worst router I've ever had.

1 ethernet port.
Terrible speed on 2.4ghz.
Can't create 2 SSIDs for 2.4 & 5ghz (which I really liked).
No ability to tweak advanced settings.

Apparently they are quite expensive. I even wonder if mine is faulty.
2m away and an unstable connection? How is that even possible?

Hope they can get it sorted one way or another for you @413x.

I've still got the Eero they provided and whilst not great I haven't experienced the issues you have. Looking to swap it out at some stage anyway for better performance and I'd like more control.

The one ethernet port is a pain and is resolved with a switch but it shouldn't be needed really.

That's what I think it's going to be replaced with

Me and the engineer did indeed decide to go from the eero to the arris.

Night and day difference.

In the end to bump the connection reliability up the router (eero) was allowed to choose the band. In a last ditch attempt to sort it.
This resulted on my work laptop being put on 2.4ghz. And Gfs too.

Gfs laptop is 2m away from the router and achieved 50mbps on 2.4ghz

Mine is 6-7m away and achieved... Drum roll.
8mbps.

Ridiculous.

So tried the arris.

Mine: 5ghz and 150/100
Gfs: 2.4ghz and 150/120

Crazy difference. No idea how the eero was so bad!

Being closer to the Wi-Fi Access Point doesn't necessarily mean you're going to get a better/faster connection, but it seems that the Eero devices you have are duff. Probably too busy sniffing all the traffic and sending it to Amazon to target ads.

For such an expensive piece of kit. It was ****.
Maybe it's to make people "mesh" them no matter how small their house is.

Glad it's gone. Only good thing about it was it looked nice.

But just like a woman.. Looks aren't important for long if shes unreliable and doesn't deliver!

Bit of a long shot here but wondering if anyone has been in a similar situation in the past.

Currently our only option for FTTP is Virgin Media as Openreach only serve VDSL/G.Fast despite us being surrounded on all sides by FTTP enabled properites from ducts and telephone poles.

Earlier this year/late last year I noticed a few "Netomnia" boxes being installed next to the BT/PO floor boxes and various Netomnia nodes being installed on telephone poles.

Checked my address and other peoples in the area and got the "We are expanding but aren't here yet reply" however sending them an email asking if our address was in scope got me the following response:

"I have had a look into this and it seems currently our build within this area is on hold due to redesign. We will work to complete and finalize our design. When this has been done, our dedicated team will build the spine of the network within your area, we aim to do this in the next few months.

When the spine has been built we can begin to offer a suggested go live date for your community as we are able to calculate the remaining timescale for the infrastructure build."

Anyone else got to this stage before? I'm a bit nervous about the being "on hold" element having being in ORs plan for a 2023 roll out only to get removed alongside many houses serviced by ducts (Practically all houses that are served by pole are FTTP enabled with ducted being left behind unless they are new builds).

Sorry to say you likely won't get it. YouFibre are heavily PIA so anything that requires work will likely not be included if not already serviced by Openreach.

If you really wanted it your best bet is to go up the food chain from low level support. Go on linkedin and get the details of YouFibre staff that oversee your area and explain that you really want service and can be an asset in getting others to sign up, they can likely accomodate if it means guaranteed customers. Most likely you want to track down contact details for Ian Mills (Head of Sales) who can direct you to the person to talk to e.g. for Scotland you would talk to Joe Scott.

I had a suspicion that would be the case but thank you for the info.

I'll have a go at emailing them, the irony is if they said "You need to commit for X to make this viable" I'd be happy to as I'm looking to get a second line, I'm just fed up of being behelden to VM for any sort of decent modern connection.

I suspect the redesign is probably due to the Openreach cut back on the area so they will be doing the same as there are floor boxes and their optical kit all over the place where BT have been but nowhere else

Pretty much this, one of Netomnia's selling points to it's investors is it's comparably low build cost. The reason for this is they utilise BTOR infrastructure wherever they can so if there is fibre thrown over poles by BT, Netomnia will do it, as you've seen, floor boxes, they'll follow them. Fresh build costs at least double what they usually pay so there is no apetite to do it.

Yep, you and @GregI were right, after pushing them today for more information on the roll out it's been clarified as "No progression until re-plan" and when chasing on my street being included their response was pretty much as you put that they use PIA and would need to conduct assessments to see if the cost/benefit was there to roll out to our street.

Well, guess there was no harm in trying but looks like I am back to being at the mercy of Openreach if/when they decide to include the several streets in our local area which haven't been included because they aren't easy wins.

Depending on how much you want to take on. You could identify all properties around you that won't get it then start a lobby group. "Hey YouFibre! We are X amount of people who will all take it if you can deliver it". Obviously you're talking "real" numbers of people not 3 or 4. May leverage your position a little but that will take time and effort.

Probably a bit out of my scope from what I was hoping for as running round all the neighbours trying to get them to sign up might earn me a reputation :D

I've got a couple that I know are interested but no more than 4 so it's likely not something I'll undertake (For now anyway, we will see how desperate I get if OR haven't decided to install Fibre by 2026)

Just like to report that getting rid of the eero and replacing with the much bigger and uglier arris router has fixed all the issues.

2.4ghz is still hitting 140+ mbps
And 5ghz is hitting the full 150+ mbps
The issues with various devices not working properly and the quite frankly dire performance on the 2.4ghz band is all gone.

2.4ghz was achieving single digit mbps speeds 5m from the router.

No need for boosters or anything like that either.

Oh. And multiple ethernet ports too. So I no longer need a switch as well as the eero.

Only thing I liked about the eero? It was a nice looking device.

Good thing with a ONT box is you can use any router, I changed mine on the first day to my ASUS DSL-AX82U and its been solid.

Yeah that would have been next step. Replacing for something else. Least I didn't have to pay out for something with the arris

Only need to look at alternatives if you have problems but sounds like its solved all yours so thats good.
