If 2FA is on I think you need to turn it off and back on again to get a new code. Might be wrong but on another site that’s the way I did it last.
Yes, I think that’s correct. The backup codes get you in so you can then disable and re-enable 2FA.

It's an age thing, but I have totally forgotten my password. Because of using 2FA I have not needed to use it recently and it has gone totally. This is embarrassing because as you know I need it to follow these protocols. Please help.

Start a thread in FCD and one of the admins will sort you out.
This may sound counterintuitive, however, I have a spreadsheet with all of my game codes and passwords.
I can't see anybody hacking my DT anytime soon and as you say.... age.
Wouldn't be needed if you'd let people opt out of the MFA back when everyone was asking, just saying

I've just had to use my backup codes.
Moved my authenticator to a "new device" (same one just needed to factory reset). Reset my 2FA using the QR on here and it denied 3 separate codes....

Are you all back and re-set up now? Did the backup codes allow you to reconfigure 2FA successfully?

Backup codes just logged me in and didn't ask to reset. Prior to the codes I reset the 2FA authenticator on my PC. It's those new auth codes that were rejected when I tried to login on my phone.
Do I need to re-reset them?
I would disable and re-enable 2FA on your account then make sure you save the new set of backup codes you’re given.
/edit - if you have problems either start a thread in FCD or (if you get locked out) use the ‘contact’ thing at the bottom of the page but you should be OK.

So I've re-reset the app auth & enable email as a backup to that. Also regenerated and saved new backup codes.

Back, after losing authenticator a while ago. All sorted thanks to Feek, and this time I've saved the backup codes! Also using an authenticator which does backups now...

Bumping this because I too failed the basic steps of saving my backup codes and got myself locked out. Bailed out with the help of Feek.
I'm normally vigilant with this stuff but for some reason completely failed on this occasion.
Backup codes are now recorded and my account has been upgraded to three security keys!

Sorry @Feek I bought a house on Friday and we are moving tomorrow. My head hurts but nothing compared to my back.
Well jsut HAD to use a backup code as suddenly for no reason the Auth App numbers are not being accepted to my account any more.
I understand but this all seems like a total mess of codes backups etc....for a web forum. Utter mess trying to log in on a new phone.

2fa is a login overhead/annoyance up until it actually protects you from someone gaining access to your account. It's like data backups. Another adminstrative overhead, up until you actually need to restore something.
Personally, I wish more sites enforced 2fa.

And did email verification… I don’t know how many accounts I have in random places where people have used my email address in error.
