Your best PC blunders.... *OOPS!*

I used a screwdriver to get the HSF on my old Tbird and managed to slip, cutting my thumb (resulting in blood on the mobo) and also bent a few capacitors over. It still worked, though :)

A common mistake I've seen other people make is plugging the modem cable into the ethernet port... cue 70-90VAC on ring destroying their etherner controller and/or mobo :p

Actually the number of times I've seen people pick up or try to hand me a modem phone cable instead of an ethernet cable is stupid.

I've done it once myself when I wasn't paying attention :o

Couldn't work out why the computers network was down, went into our server room - checked the switch was all plugged in and that a network cable was plugged into it's designated number...

Got back and looked at the cable I'd plugged in... *DOH*!

Upgraded my psu and plugged everything rather blas'e-ish.

On booting the blue genie escaped from the windows drive (dual boot with Ubuntu on separate drive). On inspection, without using ANY force, I'd manged to n00b the molex in the wrong way !!

Just as well it was only the windows drive.

Not being funny mate, but how the hell did you get a molex connector in the wrong way around without forcing it

They're angled to stop you from doing that!?

Unless it came from a Hiper Type-R PSU... I've had unrounded cables that I've had to shave myself with a screwdriver to get them to fit (rounded edges that were square) and completely rounded cables on that PSU

Not my error but a friends:

I built a new pc for a mate, installed everything fine and turned it off before heading home. 20 minutes later I get a call:

Me: Hello?
Him: The pcs not working, can you come back and have a look?
Me: Whats wrong with it?
Him: It just won't turn on
Me: What happens when you press the power button?
Him: Nothing at all.
Me: Can you press the big round button about halfway down the case?
Him: Ok
<Sound of fans spinning up and a tell tale beep>
Him: Oh

Turns out he kept pressing the reset to turn it on.

was about 9, pc parts were a wonderous thing and rather intresting to faff about with.

got an old PSU. took the casing off (was completly oblivious to the capacitor charge thingy) and cut all the wires inside of it. then tied them all together and turned it on.

it instantly popped but still seemed to funcion strangly. so i touched all the cables that were tied together

BRRRZZZTTT!

tripped the house and gave myself a nasty shock.

Not really a blunder with a computer... But i had the drill out to make some holes in the top of the case to mount a radiator... I was just fiddling with the drill and tried to hold the end bit still in my hand whilst i turned it on :o

Span at full speed and sliced my hand open... cue lots of blood :p

hehe I did that with one of these bad-boys: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FG-003-DE was 'testing' it and got my fingers on the blades... Any deeper and it would have required stitching.

Just to give you an idea how many beans this fan has in the tin: when I put one of these in the back of my case underneath the psu, it managed to suck air in through the psu extract fan!

Cracked the core on first fitting of a spanking new S754 A64 4000+ mobile that I had imported from Los Angeles.

VGA Cooler Fiasco

Really you lot are a bit daft with all of these silly blunders.

You would never catch me fitting an third party cooler to a 9800Pro (top card at the time) and then forgetting to tighten it up before fitting.

Also, I would never sit there thinking "Oh there are some strange coloured patterns I haven't seen before, I'll Google that in a bit when I've got a cuppa and some breakfast". Then to return and think "Did I switch that off ?"

Tee hee.

Funny now but clearly emotionally crippling for a while then.

Done that too, I thought I'd done some sort of magic trick at first... "Wow... where's the CPU gone!?"

*Looks at the underside of the heatsink*

"Oooh crap..." :(

Completely borked my Northwood s478 P4 that did :(

I did exactly that - I think it was my friends laptop and he'd already tried to fix it - when I pulled it off I literally thought "What the hell...that's why it's not working!!!! I am a genius" until put the heatsink down and noticed it was leaning to one side, supported by the CPU- DOH!

Spending an hour on a PC at work, trying to get it to work on the LAN again after I'd messed around inside for some unrelated matter. an hour! then my colleague phoned me, wondering where I was, he came down - I'd spent an hour pluging the CAT5 cable into the mobo port, that didn't work - the PCI ethernet card worked fine though :)

Also stacked about 8 new PCs on parcel truck, so I could put them in the back of a car (not as dodgy as it sounds :)). I misjudged the bump of the curb and the cart tipped over  I think they all still worked though, thank god :)

I can't say much to that other than
