Your best PC blunders.... *OOPS!*

I once spent a while trying to find out why my HDD in my new build wasn't working.

The IDE cable was plugged in at the HDD end and the motherboard end.

Except that it wasn't. There was an IDE cable plugged into the HDD and there was an IDE cable plugged into the motherboard. Two different cables. I had a bunch of spare cables and stuff, as you do.

Incorrectly setting the jumpers on a board for a K6-2, overclocking it from 300 to 550. The chip survived, though.

Not bothering to put the outer section back on an old tower case that had a framework and a removable outer section that covered the entire case. So I had a very open case. I was going to get around to putting the outer back on, but I wanted to play with my new toy right away! Then I knocked a pint of fizzy lemonade over it, while it was on. I recall the CPU socket fizzing and bubbling with lemonade when I took the CPU out. I washed everything in water, dried it off and reassembled it. It worked. That was the same CPU as above. Tough kit, that was.

I have absolutely no idea! But it's running perfectly. I do remember sliding it up the screws slightly to make sure it was high enough to take the PCIE cards, so it's probably not quite touching the tray...

Haha! Normally the rule "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" applies with computers, but in this case I would seriously consider putting some raising screws in before it explodes or catches fire or something similarly exciting  :D

Yes, definitely first on my "to do" list when I get home from work today. :p

We should start a new test thread: "Number of hours stable on Orthos with no rising screws". :D

Trying to put those damn front port fiddly things in the motherboard, i slipped and stabbed my finger on 1 of those little prongs, the bugger :(.

1)
Working on a PC at work, had a deadline to get a system fixed and the phone was going non-stop whenever I got a second to work on it.

Turned out to be a borked raid card and just wouldnt come out, when it did come out I stripped the sata connectors off 4x disks.

2)
Bought a Qtec PSU. Plugged in a Fan (to see if it works) while PC was on, BANG... W T F? Fan worked fine in my new psu! Which was a HIPER! That's right folks, over 3 years old and still going strong in my parents PC now.

dropped an athlon 64 3200 CPU back when they were brand new (this was right after killing an NF7-S/barton2500 combo with an oversized heatsink which shorted onthe board thus killing everything in sight)

As of dropping it i jumped backwards in a sort of "oh ****" motion.......only went and stood on the moterhboard >_<

needless to say i threw a bit of a tantrum at that point :(

I remember last year I was sitting in General Hardware for around a week advising people if they had fitted the risers in their boards as loads of threads hit about their pc's not booting up.

There were loads of them that had not actually fitted the risers. Amazing what little things can be missed that could potentionaly balls your build up.

Surprised how common that is actually.

You'd think that case manufacturers would come with a preset of risers in generic positions.

the very first PC i bought and built myself (in the late 90s iirc) was from ocuk. Built it all by the book and it wouldn't post, couriered the bits back and it worked on the bench. got it back, rinse and repeat.... turns out the metal risers were shorting the mobo :( little plastic washers between the board and risers fixed it in the end :)

The worst was plugging in a front mount USB header the wrong way round, turned the machine on and the USB chip caught fire  bye bye mobo :(

The voltage switch on the back of the PSU, thought MAYBE IT WILL GIVE IT MOAR POWER and then POOF.

Also I had a 9800pro, and it was overheating all the time. Anyway I had a thermometer, a electronic one with a metal tip. I put it on the back of the GPU to measure the heat lol and sparks came from the card!

I'll raise you a PC Chips motherboard from some time in the early/mid 90's.

I'll see you a very cheap motherboard. To be fair that PC Chips board wasnt too bad. Wonder what happened to them.

I dropped a P4 onto a wooden top beofre. Had to bend a few pins back but it worked, shame I tried to flash the BIOS while drunk on that same machine

This isnt one of mine but still thought it was funny. My brothers a computer tech and one of his mates were telling me that a company phoned them up...well it was one of the companies staff, She was panicking about the PC not working and he said 'is the mouse plugged in'...to which she replied 'whats a mouse'.....

When I was 14, I placed a AMD CPU in a Intel motherboard not knowing they incompatible.........plenty smoke came out the computer with a continuous loud beeping sound. Motherboard still worked after though:)

Using test rigs, thinking i need to change the memory. then doing so whilst the computer was still on. About 2 months ago.

Also did the 110v switch when I was a kid.

sprayed feser on a mobo last month whilst it was on, they lie it defiantly conducts. :D
