Your current Fish tank Setups!

the outlay costs

I'm completely new to this, so I have no idea about a lot of things, but I can tell you how much it's cost me to get a tank that size setup how I'd like it....

As an idea, my tank, the Fluval Roma 200 is 1m wide. It holds 200 litres and cost £285 the cabinet should have been £130 but they had a deal on so it was free.

The pump was £125, but I let them keep the Fluval that came with the tank so they took £45 of that making it £80

So that's £365 for a tank (which came with a heater and lights) a decent filter and a cabinet.

Then you need substrate. I've bought...

2x bags of light coloured gravel = £9
1x 20kg (I think) bag of JBL Manado = £17
1x 10L bag of JBL Aquabasis Plus = £32
1x JBL pro flora starter kit which includes 2.5L of aquabasis and some weekly and daily fertaliser £15.70 (mine was reduced to £5 because the box was dirty.)

So that's another £63

Then I bought some wood and rocks... think I spent about £40 there.

So that's £468 before any fish or plants or cleaning equipment lol

doh! must admit I didn't realise I'd cained so much haah!! Glad I got some deals along the way!

It can be done WAY cheaper than I have, especially if you don't want plants. But yeah... it's an expensive hobbie.

Looking forward to it though :)

G

My plans for the future include... better lights... possible CO2 etc :)

It can be relatively cheap even for a large planted tank. My initial costs were -

Tank (3'x3'x1' 240litres) custom made - £150
Stand (old wooden pallets with a blanket thrown over) - free
Substrate (pond soil and playsand) - £16
Rocks and wood (collected myself) - free
Light (70w metal halide shop spotlight off ebay) - £21
Light stand (made from modular curtain rails!) - £30
Initally filterless, but you can get old Eheims on ebay for about £20-30.

Flora and fauna were the most expensive thing - probably about £200 in total but spread over quite a large period of time.

Admittedly I've upgraded a few things since then (lights, filter) but the initial outlay needn't be huge.

Just don't feed them. Fish are cold blooded and can easily go a week or two without food. Better than having some horrible thing dissolving in your tank.

The contents of the holiday fish feeders are generally rubbish, full of ash and very little protein. If it is a planted tank with some algae then they'll have enough to feed on anyway.

hi i am setting up a new tank for cichlids do u think coral sand will buffer the water enough or will i need to buffer it with some thing

Looking good Tom.

Why the change from ferns to crypts, and where did you get so many from!?

I find that because I never do any trimming most of the scapes mature and peak after about a year then start looking increasingly messy, so once that's happened I tend to get a bit susceptible to the temptation to change things around a bit. Just so happened that coincided this time with someone offering all those crypts for sale on the UKAPS forum for £30, I just couldn't resist! Bargain of the year really, although they have inevitably melted now - going to take a few months to recover I reckon, but I was expecting that.

Much prefer the crypt layout, very nice. Is that an e. tennellus carpet too?

Cheers. The carpet is mainly Lileaopsis brasiliensis, with some Eleocharis, Glosso and Micranthemum 'monte carlo' mixed in.

Last 4 times we have nipped into pets at home we have seen at least 5 tanks with multiple dead fish in there.

Yesterday there was 3 tanks with fish being torn apart in there.

No1 for caring for pets? lol

Are marines really that hard to keep? What makes them so hard compared to tropical...is it the pH levels etc? I get that its significantly more expensive but the fish look awesome, I guess you cant get Nemo as a tropical? :p

hopefully getting a tank at the weekend, just need to figure out what to put in it.
