Your current Fish tank Setups!

Got a piece of driftwood. Its sat in a bucket of boiling water at the moment to see if it leaches any tanins. It does sink though so am hoping its pre-cured

If it does leach, which it probably will, my driftwoods still leaching nearly 5 months later, then a 100ml bag of Purigen in the filter will sort it out.

Ok folks. I'm going to dive into the marine side by getting a 30 litre tank starting with just some live rock. then getting a clown and a shrimp and some soft corals when it's stable after a month or so. I know that getting 100 litres plus would be better to mitigate water quality issues, but the fact is I need to limit the money going in just in case it goes pear shaped.

On a tank this small, what maintenance things do I need to consider? Such as dosing, filter media etc?

I think 30 litres is too small for a clownfish tbh. I would go for 60 litre minimum. Can you not stretch to the Aquael Reefmax http://www.seapets.co.uk/products/a...-aquariums/aquael-reefmax-aquarium-black.html

As for going pear shaped, buying a much smaller tank will increase the chances of that significantly. A false economy if you will.

Will have to knock the clown on the head in that case. I want to keep this tank as small as reasonable. I've worked out a budget for a 30 litre tank and that tank doubles it, let alone any extra equipment.

Im happy with my ability to look after a planted tank, so looking after a marine tank won't be alien in nature.

Bigger is better, water is more stable in larger tanks, the golden rule in marine is to take it really slow otherwise you will crash your tank and have to start all over again:(

11 hours. Crystal water still. Replaced with fresh water before bed and sank it in bucket (it began to float :()
I have cut it down though after 11 hours so am unsure if curing will now essentially reset as iv opened a fresh side of the wood to the water.

Or make most fish happier, by letting the tannins release into the tank water.

Or make your tank into tea.. Haha

I don't think they ever stop leaching tanins they just reduce.

I bought a BIG piece of bogwood, I had it boiling in the biggest pan I could borrow off my mates takeaway for an hour, I put it in it's own 50 litre tank for about 2 months changing water every 2 or 3 days with the hottest I thought the tank could take.

I then put it in a 400 litre aquarium and if I didn't do a weekly 25% change I could still see the colour in the water.
It's fine now although I have a drip system so I never in effect miss a weekly change.

Oh this piece is small, it will only sit somewere out the way (maybe even inside a cave since the pleco's don't like to leave there) .. Think one has claimed the rock and one claimed the cave but they will go anywere.

The two plecos are babies essentially (inch each roughly) how much should i be feeding them on top of what they eat all day long. I have Tetra Pleco Multi wafers. There around my thumbnail size.

Drop a whole one in or half it or two of them incase they fight? Am clueless because i won't be awake to watch them feed as it advises u drop it in when lights go out

I'd start with two quarter pieces of wafer dropped to the front (day or night, not an issue if not many fish in tank), so you can see how long they last.

Excellent, ill give that a try tonight. Tank is cloudy at the moment as iv re-arranged to add the driftwood for them and kicked up quite abit of ****. Iv got it perfect and both bits weighted down with rocks/caves.

Cycle has been completed 1.5 weeks now iv not cleaned any filter sponges yet.
I know the idea is do one at a time over few weeks so u don't kill any bacteria but they still look.. White? Not clogged or anything so should i just leave them until my flow becomes an issue. Fluval U3 internal is what im using i do intend to go to an external eventually as id prefer the inlet/outlet at opposite ends of tank so it picks up junk abit easier.

10 days time after new carpet is fitted then i can start really setting up the tank, skimmer placed in sump ready :)

5k..........FFFFFfff...Bloody Hell! I had no idea it was that expensive to get started.

lol well it could be done cheaper i am sure it could, but some of the kit is top of the range hence the prices they charge, i just knew if i had gone the cheap route i would just be upgrading in a year or two, i love this hobby:)

Yeah, I can see why you wanted some high end kit. There's no point in buying cheap tat. I guess for someone like myself with a smaller budget, maybe I could get started for around half that, maybe a little less? It's not something I plan to do just yet, but maybe in the future.
