Your current Fish tank Setups!

Mines only a tiny tank compared though mate. Just want the fish to be healthy and happy. Once i get this nailed down i'll persuade the GF (Trousers) to let me buy something bigger for more fish! :D

More reason to get a test kit mate :p

And I agree the OP either needs updating with links or there needs to be a setup thread

Couldn't resist in putting up my reefer cabinet before i ordered the carpet:)

Testing while cycling is pretty important but after that I only really do days of testing is when I make changes to the tank like:

Adding fish
Changed internal to canister filter
When I move a lot of decorations around and disturb a lot of gravel kicking up lots of fish mess.

I also wouldn't get hung up on the nitrate test anyway and its extremely unreliable. Also when cycling if you have nitrite present in the tank it skews the result further. Treat it at a best guess only.

Also there is no 'normal' nitrate level, 0 is fine, 40 can be just fine. Nitrate in my tap water starts at 32-35 before a weeks worth of fish waste is added.

Those red sea tanks are awesome, look forward to seeing it finished.

How often do you guys clear up old plant matter? Some of my new plants have dead leaves etc or there are some on the gravel, do you take them all out?

I have a trim up once a week. Keeps it short and sweet. A lot of dead plant matter will just fall off and decompose without you realising. 99% of aquarium filters can easily cope with the bio load.

Cheers rob :)

Edit:

Another day, another water change :o

Question, do you guys poor the water straight in to the tank? I'd have thought doing that disturbs the substrate etc? My tank says to do it via the top of the filter (as the lid comes off) but I read doing that disturbs things in the filter???? =/

Some nice looking tanks there.

Was eying up a Red Sea Reefer at the weekend, lovely bit of kit!

We need a cycle guide on this thread tbh. Written with all the levels and what you should be doing at that ppm etc. Iv finished my cycle now but the thread helped me along with other sources.

I linked an excellent fishless cycle guide on the previous page - linky

I use an electronic aquarium vacuum to suction the water slowly directly into the tank. Nothing at all is disturbed.

I do pour mine into the aquarium, but nothing is disturbed as there is a bar which acts to break the impact of the water, which is carefully added anyway.

Mine is returned from 25L buckets by a 1000L/H return pump and hosepipe :)

Aim it at the glass at one end so it settles in the water gently and doesnt disturb the bottom or make any extreme currents

I use a spare power head with some tubing attached to pump water out of a 50L barrel which I heat up with a spare heater over night. Before putting the new water in I use the same power head to bung 50L of water from my tank straight out the living room window lol

My discus are spawning again, each time they get a little further with the cycle. Last week was to the stage of proper wrigglers but they disappeared. Where can i get a spawning cone with a wire mesh to drop over?
