Your current Fish tank Setups!

what external filters do people recommend ? i have all a external all pond solution one 1400ef started making a very annoying rattling noise, have taken the head off and pulled out the impeller cleaned it but noise is still there.

filter is under the tank in a wooden cupboard don't think that helps dampen the general noise down from it vibration ect..

thinking about getting a Fluval 306 External File heard they are near silent in operation, might be over kill though my tank is 120L

How old is your filter? May just need a new impeller. They may look as good as new but may just be slightly worn, hence the rattle. Had this on an Eheim, side by side the old and new impeller looked and felt identical. The old one rattled, the new one did not.

Well as I was watching corrie noticed something in the corner of my eye and turns out my bristlenoses have bred. Difficult to get a pic they don't stay still. No idea if the female in the background the mother as theres 3 of them in with 2 males.

Could do with a little help please as I'm looking into getting a goldfish with maybe another joining later on. Having a read around some beginner guides I am getting a lot of different size tanks I should be aiming for but I'm struggling to decide. Some say minimum 38 litres for a goldfish but this seems very small in comparison to the 180 litres another website mentions (+ 55 litres per extra goldfish).

What size would you guys recommend or any starter tanks I should be looking at? Or should I scrap the idea of a goldfish?

I think the tank size depends on what type of goldfish you want, fancy goldfish will have different requirements to what you would put in your garden pond. I'll let someone else with more knowledge on goldfish give more detail.

They're a type of ornamental carp. Carp get big and are incredibly messy. It baffles me when people want to keep them in bowls and what not, I guess it's just the whole ignorance thing.

I've heard minimum 40g for one and for each additional fish add something like 10/20g on top of that.

But really, the bigger the better. If it were me I'd go for something else as you don't get a great deal of choice when it comes to temperate fish. Drop in a heater and you'll have a whole host of options - and they're not difficult to keep by any means (tropical fish that is).

I'd go with at least 100l tank (at least 3-foot long, ideally longer) for a singleton fancy goldfish and then at least 40l for each additional fancy goldfish.

Just be careful about buying a "fancy" rather than a "standard" goldfish, because the latter should get huge (approaching ~30cm) and typically need to be a good sized garden pond.

IMO, if you have serious thoughts about getting several fancy goldfish, get the tank suitable to house them for life now rather than later (there are often many 200l + tanks available through Ebay etc. if you don't want to splash out on new) and get them around the same time so one does not dominate the tank at food time. A group would also probably settle quicker, they are reasonably social fish.

Great info thanks all, probably best to leave it for now then and look into different options. Amazing what a goldfish requires :)

Guys I need some advice ! My brother has just come home with a Marine Fish tank he has got of the internet , I don't know much about marine fish but I just tested the water and its at S 1.014 ? and I'm sure that is too low for clown fish :( It should be around 1.020 -26 All the pet shops are now closed and he doesn't have any marine sea salt , will the fish survive over night or are they going to die ? everything else is good , Ammonia o or N o & PH is good . Some advice would be great ?

Could someone link me to a good site for info on Protain skimmers as im clueless on how they work ?

I just did a water change and forgot to treat the last bucket I put in :(

Gave to wait and see what happens.

Unless that one bucket of untreated water was a very significant volume of the tank (eg. ~50%), don't stress about it.

If you see your fish start to gasp near the water surface shortly after this incident, then consider adding some dechlorinator to the tank.

I made myself a black background out of printed paper and cardboard earlier. It looks "special" when it's on its own, but sat behind the tank it looks pretty good :) Lights out at the moment, otherwise I'd grab a picture.

Hi,

My daughter has two black moors, which I've just moved into a bigger tank. Poor things were in a 15l tank, which was only supposed to be for a few weeks! But it ended up being 2 years!

Anyway, the tank has been set up for just over a week and I used the old filter media and some King British Filter Aid+in the new filter to help things along. Water tests show that everything is just fine at the moment.

We're going away for just over a week on Saturday and I've got my brother in law to pop in and feed them a couple of times during the week. But I was wondering if it would be a good idea to do a small water change before we go, or whether to leave well alone while things are still settling down.

PS. I know people go on about tank size and fancy goldfish and that's something that will be remedied in the future either by rehoming, or upgrading to another tank. But in the meantime they're much happier in their comparatively much larger home, which has natural plants (yes, I know but it can be done with goldies) and good filtration.

Treat the tank if need be. Dechlorinator takes seconds to work.

Everything's ok now, looks like a dodged a bullet :)

Any one know what is best way to cycle a new marine tank, I have heard adding ammonia liquid, live rock or fish(which is not best which I will avoid). Thanks
