Your current Fish tank Setups!

I'll post some a few pics of mine later, its nothing special, but does the job.
Was struggling with water temps last week, had to do an extra water change this weekend and keep the lights off.

The trick is a very high plant biomass, particularly floating or emergent/riparian plants because these have access to atmospheric co2, and carbon availability is normally the factor limiting plant growth in an aquarium. These plants then remove pretty much all the nitrates and a lot of other waste products from the water column.

However, I (and several other people who have run non water change systems, such as Diana Walstad) tend to find that fish health can deteriorate after long periods without water changes, so I would recommend doing a few nice big water changes at least every now and again in order to 'reset' things. Basically, there's no good reason not to do water changes, other than laziness, but you can get away with it in very specific circumstances.

Or cheat like me and have a Drip change system plumbed into the mains

*I know I know, technically this isn't a no change system, but it means I don't have to change the water manually myself (or at least very rarely)

So mines took a turn for the worse, had a power cut and when I reset the fuses it had blown up all the water pumps in the tank. It happened at night so could do nothing until the next day, by that time most of the corals were stripped or dying, but luckily the fish all survived.

Things go bad real quickly!!!

Get yourself a UPS? Can pick them up pretty cheaply on the bay, buy some new batteries and away you go?!

I've had to remove all the gravel from our tank as it was more snails than gravel. Her indoors got some plants some time ago from the local place and ever since we've been fighting a losing battle with snails. The assassin snails couldn't keep up so have removed them, removed gravel and put them back.

I have a black bucket full of trumpet snails and gravel now!

Ordered a 406 which should come soon, this one is brand new so should be fine. Almost every review of external filters has at least a couple of folk saying they leak, how many of you use external and which are best?

Had no issues with my 306 other than it's noisy and can take a long time to bleed the air out of its self after maintenance adding to the noise.

Just make sure you follow the instructions and use silicone grease on the seal every time you open it.

Bought this little beauty a few days ago:

Problem is i cannot get him to eat anything, like he is puting his nose up to anything i put in the tank. Tried flake, frozen bloodworm and shrimp.

Any ideas?

When I got mine he was picky at the start, in the end he liked King British pellets, the small ones. eats those fine.

How about live blood worm or the other lave type things? Assume you've tried 'Betta' specific pellets?

He's probably sad, make sure he has places to hide as well.

I took him away from PAH, he should be happy as larry! :p

Rybo, what temp is your water at?

Bettas are quite known to take a while to settle in before they will eat. Some up to a week.

A little tip someone told me to get a betta interested is to take some betta pellets and garlic juice. In supermarkets you can buy jars of garlic cloves in water. Take some of this water and soak some pellets in it for an hour or two, then try feeding them. The garlic smell often makes them go nuts for it.

Water is at 25-26, plenty of hiding spots. Literally doesn't even have sniff at the food i have put in the tank. Though i haven't bought any of these betta pellets yet (didn't know they existed to be honest). Ill grab some in the morning.

I normally research fish before buying but this betta just caught my eye and i had to have him there and then, lovely blue. Was only nipping in to grab some dog treats...

My 405 is very quiet and gets rid of the air really fast, it just leaks :( I tried a new seal and I've tried vaseline but nowt gives yet.

406 on the way so should all be good.

Vaseline is the complete opposite of what you should do. It's oil based and will break down the rubber in the o-ring and plastic. You should use a silicone based lubricant.

Amano wont reproduce at all in freshwater.

All of my shrimp keep dying :(

In contrast to the above quote, I must now be doing something right - I have babies!

These little fellas are tiny, about 5mm across

My Ram fry sadly disappeared a couple of weeks back. This morning though, woke up to find another clump of fry dumped in a little hole by a plant, both parents patrolling.

They must be at it like rabbits!

That's a good idea, and now I have a vortech again it makes sense to buy a battery back up. I think I was very unlucky for so much stuff to blow in one go. Turns out it was a dodgy wire in the kitchen that tripped out the whole house.

what external filters do people recommend ? i have all a external all pond solution one 1400ef started making a very annoying rattling noise, have taken the head off and pulled out the impeller cleaned it but noise is still there.

filter is under the tank in a wooden cupboard don't think that helps dampen the general noise down from it vibration ect..

thinking about getting a Fluval 306 External File heard they are near silent in operation, might be over kill though my tank is 120L

I thought I should pop in my first post as I have had my aquarium set up for just over 3 months now and everything seems to have been going really well, considering it is my first attempt at anything like this. Apologies for the long post in advance :).

My aquarium setup consists of a 90 litre Fluval tank, lights, heater and Fluval U2 pump/filter and was a gift for my 30th Birthday.

For the first week or so I just had a few plants installed to get the ecosystem going along with starting bacteria. I then introduced my first fish; 2 Leopard and 2 Zebra Danios, as the water conditions seemed reasonable at this stage.

These were my only inhabitants for the first 4 weeks or so whilst the water conditions stabilised as for some reason the Nitrite level was higher than I ideally wanted. This was sorted with regular 10-20% water changes every couple of days with feeding happening in between each change for around 2 weeks.

The Nitrite level had now dropped down to zero, Ammonia was at an acceptable level for the pH, however Nitrate had to be monitored closely due to it being quite high even in the tap water. I then introduced my next fish; 2 Angel fish and an Ancistrus which all seemed to integrate really well to the tank, however it freaked the Danios out something chronic as they didn't want to leave the top of the tank for a good couple of weeks.

Fast forward a month and that brings us to tonight which, to my surprise, has harbored some new additions to the tank.

Apologies for the picture quality, trying to get a decent photo seemed rather difficult.

The parents appear to be taking it in turns fanning the eggs and guarding the area so I'll have to see what happens over the next couple of days.

With regards to the eggs, I was thinking about getting some sort of small floating tank for them, however it appears that after reading online, if I'm serious about trying to keep them I would need to pop them all in a secondary tank of around 10 gallons in size.

Thanks for reading and any comments/suggestions/criticisms are welcomed as, like I say, I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to this.

Anyone had any experience of Thai Red Claw Crabs? I bought two to put in my 80 litre tank and they are escape artists. They shimmy up air lines and power cables I am at the end of my tether. We have had to tape the lid shut on the aqaurium
