Your current Fish tank Setups!

So iv got platy fry now. Mother and other fish grabbed the majority of them but one has survived a few weeks swimming around in the plants hidden away (even from my plecos) he's about 1/8 inch in size and iv netted it today and put it in a fry keeper box inside the main tank. He's a sole survivor as far as I can see (unless any more pop out).. Now I'm due on holiday in two weeks but I want to see if I can get it to survive but I don't want to release him back out and let nature take its course. Best way of keeping it alive whilst I'm away for 8 days?

My low tech tank is finally taking shape. No chems, no ferts, low light, never done a water change since its started though i do top up 1 liter of water a day lost to evaporation.
Feed 4 times a week and add a drop of glute every once in a while, other than that i let it do its own thing.

How it started

Wanting to add a few more crypts and another school of fish possibly some Odessa Barbs.

Tanks looking great Famas. I used to run a no water change system and it can work, but I think on balance I'd definitely do at least some to stop the organics going through the roof.

Just did a bit of an overhaul on my biggie -

Very very nice. Are they Bolivian rams in the vid?

Thanks! No they're young Guianacara stergiosi. There's an adult pair in there as well (about 5") but they didn't make an appearance. The youngsters are 5 that I've kept from a spawn of 60 that were raised in the tank but have since been rehomed.

Bought this little beauty a few days ago:

Problem is i cannot get him to eat anything, like he is puting his nose up to anything i put in the tank. Tried flake, frozen bloodworm and shrimp.

Any ideas?

How about live blood worm or the other lave type things? Assume you've tried 'Betta' specific pellets?

He's probably sad, make sure he has places to hide as well.

How do you even run a non-water change tank? I do weekly water changes at the moment on my small tank, although I have found a way to make it less cumbersome :D

The trick is a very high plant biomass, particularly floating or emergent/riparian plants because these have access to atmospheric co2, and carbon availability is normally the factor limiting plant growth in an aquarium. These plants then remove pretty much all the nitrates and a lot of other waste products from the water column.

However, I (and several other people who have run non water change systems, such as Diana Walstad) tend to find that fish health can deteriorate after long periods without water changes, so I would recommend doing a few nice big water changes at least every now and again in order to 'reset' things. Basically, there's no good reason not to do water changes, other than laziness, but you can get away with it in very specific circumstances.

Rybo, what temp is your water at?

Bettas are quite known to take a while to settle in before they will eat. Some up to a week.

A little tip someone told me to get a betta interested is to take some betta pellets and garlic juice. In supermarkets you can buy jars of garlic cloves in water. Take some of this water and soak some pellets in it for an hour or two, then try feeding them. The garlic smell often makes them go nuts for it.

Aye :)

I'm still battling a snail infestation so shan't be anything yet! I was just interested in all honesty. It would be ncie to have plants that helped out more though, rather than you having to battle to keep them alive.

Which is another point, what do people do in terms of plant food? Currently I've got liquid form from SeaChem that I put in each week. Do people also advise using tablets?

Just buy a good all-in-one complete powder and make it up as needed. LUSH Max (ebay) is pretty much the cheapest way of going about it. Unless your nitrates and phosphates are already high, in which case LUSH Trace mix might be better.

My fluval 405 suddenly cannot be stopped from leaking, I've cleaned all round the top and changed the seal but it still leaks about half a bucket a week. I guess I've had a couple of years out of it......I did expect more but I got it second hand on gumtree for £30 lol.

Ordered a 406 which should come soon, this one is brand new so should be fine. Almost every review of external filters has at least a couple of folk saying they leak, how many of you use external and which are best?
