I read something online also about someone saying that the strips are better, as although they're not as accurate, they're accurate enough to know there's a problem

Is there no decent, well priced digital solution yet? I previously looked at Seneye but it doesn't do everything and you need to buy the slides each month.

I found a good thing on Amazon that digitally reads the pH but unfortunately it only existed for pH. I'm guessing detecting the rest of the stuff is more tricky to do with simple electronics only

That's the reason I recommend them, accurate enough to know you have a problem and there not that worse than the liquid kits in terms of accuracy. Once you realise all kits are inaccurate it puts the strips ease of use into perspective.

I have a PH pen which is reasonable, can take up to 30 seconds to stabilise before you can take a reading unlike the TDS meter which is instant.

Got everything you see in the image below for £120 inc fish and everything else, plus load of extras, filters, testers, food, the lot! they are moving abroad so wanted rid. I plan to get a 3d background, or just move away from the print background, anyone had success in making one? I also would like to add sand as a substrate, I have read that play sand is a great cheap option, has anyone else done this?

Having used play sand I would try and source something with a larger grain size if possible but it can work. Try not to go too thick, no more than 1 inch otherwise you can run into problems with toxic gas pockets forming as the sand gets compacted down and anaerobic bacteria form. The counter to this problem is to have fish or snails etc that burro through the sand and turn it over regularly.

Thanks all

Went with the API master test kit in the end (drops) since a lot of people say they've had issues with the strips and I'd rather not take the chance for the small cost difference. The drip kit should last considerably longer too and seems a good middle ground between electronic and the strips like that website states

My flame angel has been missing all day yesterday and today, fed it thurs night and it was fine and had been a model citizen in my tank, absoutly my favorite fish.

Just found it stuck down my emergency overflow downpipe, only dismantled it coz the overflow was stinking. Absoutly devistated, quite litterally £100 down the drain

Best pic i got of him

Looking to get myself another fish tank. had one years ago then decided to sell them as I could not maintain them due to various things in life. now that i have my time back i'm now looking to get a new aquarium and have looked at and quite like the Aqua One vogue tank. Which has LED lighting, external filter and heater.

Are these any good ?

Sorry for the loss, such a nice fish :(

Is there anything you can do to stop it happening again like some sort of lid.

to be honest, id rather leave the overflow box open, the normal syphon drain has a grate on the bottom so theres no way a fish could get into it and IF a fish does jump it can survive in there untill i get home

the thing i cant understand is the emergency drain points upwards and is a good 3 inches above the normal drain so it was so unlucky that somehow the fish landed in the exact spot to get stuck in the pipe there, must be a 1% chance.

pics should explain it better

how unlucky can you get for it to land in that exact spot!

also fyi all the stuff in the overflow is sand kicked up by my pistol shrimp and goby doing some rearranging!

on the plus side, her is his replacement.

I want to increase the size of my RCS colony but not really sure of the most cost effective way to buy them. My last batch was from a forum, but that place shut down recently :(

My existing stock is mainly all males, with one or two females. I live in an area with high nitrates (40ppm from the tap) so they aren't breeding readily

Best thing i ever did when keeping shrimp was to buy an rodi unit and then re mineralise with the following http://www.theshrimptank.com/water-conditioners/salty-shrimp-bee-shrimp-gh/

My "production" doubled/trippled to the point i was selling them to my lfs and funding my hobby. Am hoping to get to that point with my saltwater tank and corals eventually

Depends on water pressure for if you need a pumped or non-pumped one.

If you have med-low pressure or if your going to run it off a hose in the garage/shed then for sure get a pumped one.

As far as brands go there all very similar really, I have a Vyair 50Gpd pumped and a 100L water but.

Can someone recommended a RODI unit for my freshwater / shrimp tank?

Maybe a beginners guide too :)

http://www.osmotics.co.uk/

buy all my ro stuff from there, make sure u get a 3 stage [ro + DI]

http://www.osmotics.co.uk/products/3-Stage-100-Gallon-Per-Day-Reverse-Osmosis-System.html

you will also need to remineralise for keeping shrimp, i always used the stuff i linked above but will give u an amazon link

https://www.amazon.co.uk/SaltyShrim...8&qid=1474762396&sr=8-1&keywords=salty+shrimp

almost guaranteed you will need a booster pump aswell, they need 100psi to work properly and my tap water comes out at 40psi. so budget for that aswell.

Quick question, I picked up a few rocks/stones while at the beech last weekend as they'll look awesome in my tropical tank. Just wondering whats the best way to wash them before putting them in my tank?
