Your current Fish tank Setups!

Thinking about getting into the fish game again after many years. Im looking to install a tank in the lounge that can be seen through a hole in the wall into the hallway.

Ive always fancied a salt water setup but think the tank would be to small sadly.

Can anyone advise of some good sites/advice pages? i used to run a community but thats shutup shop a long time ago

I'm beginning to think about replacing my rather small tank, now that were moved and settled into the new house.

Does anyone have any tank recommendations, up to 1m wide...

Needs to be hooded (as the cat will start snacking otherwise)?

I quite like the idea of the Askol Pure XL (https://fishkeeper.co.uk/product/askoll-pure-xl-aquarium-black), with built in filtration, heating & lighting. But i'm worried the filtration isn't great & the £15 per month replacement filter medium is crazy!

Otherwise i may look at a canister filter but the difficulty with that is keeping the space tidy & the canister out of the way.

NB, I don't want a cabinate - will be building a shelf (with some very serious support) into the alcove its going in :)

You don't want to be replacing your filter media every month, or your tank will be permanently cycling! I replace one pad in mine on rotation every ~6 months...

Imo, this is a good site for information and advice, despite being quite poorly organized / laid out.

+1

Personally, I'm inclined to replace the media only when it starts to fall apart.

yer, i know! its their easy maintenance system. You replace 1 of 2 foam filters every month and a chemical filter sachet thing. Theres also a ceramic biological filtration section that sits under the foam so your not trashing the bio evey month.

"Easy maintenance"? Sounds like a lot of hassle and money to me :p as long as your tank isn't overstocked and you aren't overfeeding, I cant see any reason why you'd need to change media that often except to line the company's pockets

Dont waste money on replacing those foam blocks. Rinse them in old tank water and keep reusing untill they disintegrate and when they do replace then with filter floss for 1/16th if the price.

Classic case of making it "easier" but making you pay for the privilege.

Also remove the chemical packs and fill the compartments with more bio rings. You wont need any of thos things (likley carbon and a phosphate bag purgen or something) if and when you do need to run some carbon (water smelling/yellowing) buy a tub of it and it comes with filter socks which you just fill up and empty out as and when needed, these just get put anywhere in the tank/filter compartment basically.

cycling a marine tank what truth is in this statement?

drop 4 flakes of fishfood in a day until you spot ammonia in your daily tests. Keep feeding imaginary fish daily---and 5 days after you fail to provoke ammonia, you are cycled.

i thought about using pure ammonia or even the one of the various quick start products.

the tank has been cycling since saturday with live sand and cured live rock, just waiting for that ammonia spike to kick in.

currently ph is 7.8 nitrite 0 ammonia 0 and nitrate 5.0

Did a complete teardown last week, in preparation for a re-stock/sort/adding second filter.

Decided to move away from odd-balls and back into a fairly mainstream community tank
2 x Angels (existing)
7 x Columbian Tetra (1 was existing)
6 x Kuhli loach

New DIY moonlight now makes the tank look like this, although the camera makes it look much more blue than it actually is!

Took out a load of the floating plants, and reduce the cover, and testing out a silk plant (which I subsequently arranged to be "growing" up through various parts around the bogwood) to see how it gets on.

So, now running a Fluval 205 through the default outlet, and the new EFX 200 via a submerged spray bar to keep the floating plants at one end of the tank, this means the moonlight is more effective, and gives an area of fairly static cover.

Once the new stock has settled, I will look at adding something top swimming to enjoy the floating plant roots :)

I've never cycled a marine tank, but I do know that the quick-start products should usually be avoided. Ammonia is dirt cheap anyway.

OK - my angel fish laid eggs on a leaf. I moved this leaf to a segregation net I got with the tank (thrown in without thought). They were at a wriggler stage for about 2 - 3 days, then I thought they would die, I could let the kids down due to nature, say maybe next time but a few days later the little buggers are zooming around free swimming!

So I have read up bits on looking after fry and feeding them bloodworm (as all my fish now) I am prepared to get a second tank but pronto as I would need to get it cycling etc. Is this a good idea? I dont know.

I am currently thinking of a way of segregating 25% of my tank to keep them away from the rest of my fish but struggling to find such a product to fit the size of my tank, thinking of making something. I am over due a water change due to this now so need to decide quickly. Should I see how far I can go?

thats what im using! but its collecting dirt fast, and cleaning it by syphoning would suck the little sods with it, not to mentions the parents picking at it and being pretty aggravated understandably.
