Your current Fish tank Setups!

20L tank is so small, you are better off using buckets to mix the salt water and if you use a tank you will just have to pump or siphon it into buckets anyway. You might as well just use a 20L bucket.

Anything will be fine to mix it, just as long as it mixes it.

Well my tank is only 136l, so taking into account rocks & sand etc, 20l is basically a 20% weekly water change. I have a spare top up pump as well, so figure I could use that to pump into the main tank, plus I think the 20l tank will just about fit on the shelf under the main tank so keeps it tidy and out of the way

That adds a bit of perspective but it is worth thinking about that it is only 20L to the brim. If you want to get all 20L out you have to get every last drop out. It’s not really advised to be picking up tanks to pour stuff out. The seems will break eventually.

If you are pumping there will probably be at least 4-6L left in the bottom depending how big the pump is and the footprint of the tank.

Hmm, this is true, think I'll have to measure exactly how much it actually holds!

I keep a couple of barrels of RO water, then just make a fresh 100 litre every two weeks for my water change, if you have the space just make a load up and store it already mixed perfectly fine for months.

I took your advice and ended up getting a 25l bucket to do the mixing in, got a new return pump as well to get a bit more flow, so using the old one for mixing.

Decided I might as well go the whole hog, so picked up a RODI unit as well!

Seems to all be working and means a water change now costs me ~£3.50 instead of £7, not much, but will soon add up :)

So now I'm making my own water, is it worth gradually moving to a better brand of salt? Currently using H2ocean since that's what the shop was using, but open to suggestions if there's something better (or are they all of a muchness)?

Dd h20 salt is the best salt ive used. Stick with that!

Yup best salt out there.

Bought a little nano tank for the pc room, gonna set up over the coming months.

Excellent, a quick and simple answer :) thanks!

Edit: make that 2 :p

Out of interest, what do people do with their waste water from RO production? I've read a lot of people use it for their garden, but these are posts from people who live in Florida and California with lots of sun... living in the Midlands the last thing my garden needs is more water!!

Can I use it for my tropical tank, or is it going to be too high in nastiness (my tap water measures at 76 ppm TDS, so it's not exactly high to start with)

Just ditch it if watering the garden doesn't appeal, water is like £3 per 1000L, not exactly expensive.

I wouldn't store it, if you have a 100L barrel for the RO you will need at least a 300L barrel for the waste.

Water making all going good so far, dare say the tank is looking slightly cleaner in the last week or so (maybe just placebo effect :p) conch seems to be doing a good job on the sand too. We got an emerald crab to try and clear some of the green hair algae, but he seems to be avoiding one side of the tank for some reason!

After watching one of the candy cane heads swallow a mysis shrimp that landed on it last night whilst feeding the fish, I'm keen to get some more corals, going to a local reef shop next week to take a peek, but looking online I can get cool looking frags for much lower prices even accounting for shipping. Obviously there are risks involved, but anyone ordered corals online and what were your experiences? Any recommended sites?

Wish they sold something similar for the ai hydras. tanks looking great. Got my tank back uo and cycling now so hoping to start building it back up again.

They do look good, but the one issue I had with the Radions was that the fans were permanently on. If I was setting up a tank again I would probably go with Hydras.

Good luck with the restart!

They have made the tank look a lot better with the colour blending, not the best with fit on one of them a little bit of light bleed you can see.

So iv got my DD Jumpguard ordered now for my RSR nano, Started feeding reef roids today too to my zoas, gsp and xenia. Unsure if i quite followed the instructions correctly but next time i don't think ill add as much water into the mix as it seemed a little thin/powder rather than a thicker food i could actually feed. Will try again in a week.

Also ordered a Tunze Care magnet nano as magfloats do not work well on marine tanks the algae is a lot harder! Lastly im now on the hunt for more livestock now iv sorted afew issues out and got it stable. Want to add a second hermit perhaps

Just had a look at that cleaner, looks pretty cool, please post your thoughts as I'm currently using a magfloat and have to get in there with a metal scraper every couple of weeks to get rid of the tougher stuff

Buy a flipper last cleaner you will ever buy. They are absoutly fantastic, dont even have to take it out of the water to change between hard and normal scraper
