Your current Fish tank Setups!

I’d definitely add another support just to be sure, better safe than sorry. We definitely over engineered the supports under our reef aquarium.

if you keep it to the edge of the desk so the leg provides support you should be fine, you could also add a couple of the little kitchen cabinet feet or block of wood ontop of the drawers below which would do the job

That’s what I would do.

Painted our white/pine aquarium today. Light and plants being added later in the week. Will post pictures when the next phase is complete. Looks so much better in black, really draws your focus to the tank itself. Went for a satin finish which is just glossy about enough (and matches the turtle aquarium more closely).

Basking lamp, UV etc also ready for the turtle tank.

I keep randomly going through that phase for no obvious reason. Usually associated with raised phosphates in our case, but I’ve failed to directly pinpoint the cause. Not a huge breakout fortunately unlike a few months ago. Just part of an ecosystem I guess.

Thanks, putting supports on the drawers does sound like a good plan.

It now matches the turtle tank. I’m also hoping the plants will stand out a little more when the lighting goes on. That’s tomorrows job. Not bad for a free aquarium!

Think I'm going to go out at the weekend and look around the LFS, see if I can spot a decent 10gal with a hood.

I am now kinda toying with the idea of 2 female pea puffers, but worry about the hassle of feeding them frozen/fresh food.

Looking for a HOB filter, something with low flow. Can anyone recommend 1?

I had pea puffers, they were great little critters until the honey moon period passed and the realities of keep them set in. Never again.

Feeding them is a proper pain in the rear, as they’ll only take frozen or fresh. You also can’t just bang on an auto feeder and go on holiday for 2 weeks.

HOB filters are generally pretty cheap and built to a price, it’s what I used when I had mine. Just bear in mind the ‘water fall’ can be a bit noisy.

Yeah, that's what I was worried about, think I'll stick to the betta idea.

I'm a bit worried about the HOB being noisy, especially since the tanks going in the bedroom, but I need something that's not gonna pinball the poor fish around the tank.

Plants added to the smaller aquarium and a new light.

Turtle aquarium has had some more rocks and artificial plants added, also blocking up some smaller gaps. Looks like it’s going to need another heater too, 300W isn’t getting it above 21C.

HOBs can be loud as the motor isn't submerged.

I made my own internal filter with just some good quality, hollowed out foam and a powerhead. It's totally shrimp safe and simple. Contains a lot more filter material than an off the shelf one.

I love these little HOBs from all pond solutions, they are basically little external cannisters, i fill the trays with alphagrog or your media of choice and top tray has the foams. Flow can be adjusted https://www.allpondsolutions.co.uk/products/hob-500

Edit.
Thats the size for comparison on a 20gallon (90l)

How have i not found this thread before, Have owned many tanks and fish in the past, but had to get rid as moved to a new build house and they wasnt keen on a large fish tank. Would love to get another one eventually, but i think i would either go with an oscar aquarium or a Fish only saltwater tank.

Well went looking earlier and bought this on impulse.

56 litre tank which came with a hood, lights and internal filter.

Got a lot of work to do now. Despite being in a box and all sealed up, the tank is filthy. Tons of marks inside and outside of the tank.
Any tips on what I should clean it with? Want to clean it tomorrow, just so I can make sure there's no actual scratches on the glass.

The tank is not sitting flat, it's rocking a little bit.
Is getting an aquarium mat, my best bet?

Does anyone know a good website for decor, driftwood/rocks? My local selection was pretty poor.

I'm still undecided about what filter to get. I asked on the betta reddit and everyone said get a sponge filter, but I'm very concerned about the noise those air pumps make. I havn't had an air pump in years, but you could definitely tell when the thing was on!
Following Sharpgsxr advice, I do like the look on this HOB.

Says it can handle a 60 litres and has adjustable flow. I am just worried about the waterfall noise.

Need to get my nerd on with some aquarium plants, would like some nice moss on the driftwood. Would also like a carpet plant for the front of the tank, but with the low light LED's this thing comes with, I don't think I'm going to get many options.

1 thing that has disappointed me today, I went to 3 pet shops, 2 of which were dedicated fish shops. In all those shops, there was only 1 betta for sale. Have they gone out of fashion? They used to be everywhere, stuck in stupidly small bowls/tanks. I'd rather not buy fish online, but I may how no choice when the time comes.

I do find the all pond solutions stuff great for the price, the one i got isnt the waterfall type so isnt noisy and has room for more media. The one you linked looks fine for that size of tank and has a surface skimmer attachment.

https://www.aquariumgardens.co.uk is my go to.

Just on the point of planting..obviously you've identified the light being a potential issue but also a lack of co2 is going to limit what you can plant successfully.

Betta fish are not beginner friendly fish tbh...they require very specific tank requirements, their absence from the stores is a blessing really ... plus you don't have a heater? So you currently wouldnt be able to keep them anyway.

My only two bits of advice on filters are. Bigger is better and the more media it can accept the better.

Other than low(ish) flow for very long finned varieties, a Betta is pretty adaptable to a wide range of tank perimeters. They are bred in a wide variety of tap water these days. If your referring to the more specialist/wild verities, sure but that’s not what you’ll find in your local Maidenhead aquatics.

Pretty much every fish store I walk into typically has a range of Bettas on sale, perhaps they were just low on stock.

That filter will probably be fine, I’m fairly sure I had that model in the past. Manage your expectations when it comes to quality though.

I bought two All Pond Solution "2000l per hour" external filters 10+ years ago, actual flow was well below spec at ~800lph, but more annoyingly they were really noisy. The impeller magnets were chipped and so were the replacements they sent me, used one in my garage tank until I decomissioned the tank but the other ended up being an emergency spare as the noise indoors upset the neighbours and us to a lesser degree.

Fish temperature requirements are an emotive subject, none of my indoor tanks run a heater unless it's an usually cold winter snap, ambient room temperature is typically 18-32C through the seasons. All the fish I have these days are "tropical," including a Leopard Bushfish and a group of Upside Down Synodontis that are ~14 years old.

Thanks for the replies.

I am going to get a heater, just a bit lower down on the priority list at the moment, which is why I didn't mention it.
Once I get the tank all planted, I'll buy 1.
