Your current Fish tank Setups!

3 things stop me Tom.

- That amount of uncovered tank, the amount of evaporation, damp in the house.
- Uncovered tank + cat = trouble
- I haven't even got the hang of basic low tech planted tanks yet, so I'll keep learning to walk before I jog or run!

Yeah you do lose a bit to evaporation...I'd guess something like 2 litres per square foot per week, although it varies considerably with air temperature and humidity. I don't find this an issue as I always have my window open a crack, but you'll get some condensation if you're one of those people that likes to live in a hermetically sealed environment.

We looked after a friends cats for a bit; one completely ignored the tank while the other was very interested in it until accidentally falling in!

I wouldn't say this is any harder than a basic low tech tank though... in fact, it is a basic low tech tank but even more forgiving thanks to the ability of emergent plants to reduce any fluctuations in nutrient/ammonia levels.

Well I've suspected for a while that my cherry shrimp population is pretty mongrel... have had a few really dark red, almost black looking females, and now today I spotted my first completely blue 'cherry'. Any shrimp experts fancy a guess as to what they've hybridised with?

I have no idea what its hybrised with but its a pretty cool looking shrimp.

I used to have a True Peppermint Shrimp but something ate it. :( I found its carcass bitten in half.

These are my new favorite Shrimp. Sexy Anemone Shrimps, they are tiny but are fascinating to watch, they sway from side to side.

my butterfly pleco has developed a bad case of pop eye and has a swollen belly, its been like this for a few days. ive seen that you can try epsom salts but the thing is i dont have a spare tank to treat it in, would i be able to use a bucket to treat it in and then put it back in the tank? from what ive seen though once it has the symptoms its hard to cure. its about 7 years old so its not done to bad really

Bucket is fine as long as it's clean (i.e. no cleaning chemicals in there - I'd suggest rinsing several times with hot water), and I'd use tank water in there to avoid shock to the pleco. Also try some blanched cucumber as fresh foods can assist if it's a gastric issue.

I've gone from gravel to sand after one of my Black Moors got a piece lodged in his mouth. No harm done and he's fine now.

My other Black Moor has got a cloudy eye (just the one). I've tried aquarium salt and then a dose of Gold Disease Safe for one week with the carbon filters removed. I might try Melafix next but I hear mixed reviews, any one else used it? Would you add to the aquarium water or remove the Black Moor to a separate tank? Water quality is excellent BTW.

One of my Orandas has an ongoing issue with bloating after feeding. She takes in air during feeding which is a sign of an indigestion problem, apparently they are well known for it. I have reduced feeding, stopped feeding, changed food to New Life Spectrum (pre-soaked in aquarium water for 10 minutes), tried peas and broccoli but the problem continues.

Anyone any suggestions?

I've found these people very knowledgeable and helpful in the past :

my mrs saw me scoping out some shallow tanks with lots of plants growing above the water etc, she swiftly said no.

but she has agreed to a normal planted tank...

but after the wedding, which is sept.

ive got about 100cm of width to play with so im looking at a rio 180 and a none bow front.

One or two of you may recall that some time back in June last year I bought a Kessil a150 'Amazon Sun' from a guy in Australia. Well, thanks to the combined incompetence of both the Australian and British postal systems (ParcelFarce, I'm looking at you), it arrived yesterday! It's been around the world at least 4 times, and in the end we had to resort to having the guy's Mum bring it back to the UK in her luggage.

Anyway, I know a few people are interested in these lights so thought I'd do a quick comparison with my trusty 70w metal halide. Both lights were suspended 50cm above the water, camera was on a tripod and in manual mode, with white balance set to 4150K which best matched my perception of the room without either tank light on. I think the results give a fairly good idea of the rendition of the two units, but make sure you're viewing them in a colour managed browser (ie, not Chrome or IE) if you want an accurate view.

Impressions so far after 2 days with it.... overall I like it. It's very small and means I'll be able to retire my somewhat ugly lighting frame and get a more minimalist fitting of some sort. The colour rendition is pretty good (I tried one of those cheap ebay floodlight LEDs once and it was ghastly, this is much better and nicely contrasty without giving harsh shadows).

The one major issue I have with it is the noise of the little 40mm fan - it's louder than my PC and you can hear it over pretty much anything else in the room. Definitely enough to be annoying in a bedroom. I've opened the can up and it looks like its a standard PC northbridge style fan, so I've ordered a supposedly quiet replacement fan and I'm hoping it'll be pretty straightforward to swap out.

So... 70w halide with (I think) a 6000k bulb in -

And the Kessil a150 (rated as 6700K) -

So, not actually much different!

Afraid I don't have a par meter to check that, but visually it looks similarly bright to my 70w halide. Photoshop reckons the cropped underwater section of the image is about 20% brighter with the Kessil, which seems believable.

Some advice.

My tank is a Juwel Rio 180. My GF took out the 3D background as it was disgustingly filthy. Maybe a bad move I guess, but I'm wanting to replace it. I have a small tank I can move the fish to when I do this, but I'm struggling to figure out what sort of background it is. The only one I can find for certain is £75 on ebay which makes me want to buy a new tank as this one is a little tatty around the edges. Anyone replaced theirs?

Guys a little advice please ? :)

Looking to change the 30l tank thats in the lounge for something a little larger. Is the interpet 64 fish pod any good? Should I be looking at something else?

Regards

Very few people replace them, most people just get rid of them! They'll always get filthy very rapidly. Have a look at places like zooplus.de, charterhouse aquatics, aqua essentials, aquacadabra, swell uk.

What's your budget and size? Something like a nice little 2ft tank would give you a lot more options, e.g. a Juwel Lido 120.
