Yawn...

I'm buying a few plants today for my nano. What is the name of the plant or plants that grow on the bottom of the tank like grass. I like that look a lot. Is it java moss?

Could be many different things, probably eleocharis acicularis (or the sp. mini variety).

There are quite a few good carpeting plants depending on what you want, with varying demands.

I need to get a pic up of my newly setup tank soon, just migrated to a 400l tank and bought a load of new fish for it.

Also bought a 2nd hand EX700 off the bay and it's leaking, don't know what is causing that yet though. my ex1200 that I bought new has never leaked.

Bought an Amazon Sword (Echinodorus Rosea) :

Will add one or two other species of plants as time goes on - maybe java moss. Might use a tiny piece of bogwood that I have lying around, or scout around for a small, colourful bit of rock.

With the ex700 check all the o rings, the two way valve assembly's o rings are usually the weak point. Give them a bloody good clean and a coat of vaseline. If that doesn't solve it, dissassemble the head unit and check the primer button's seals. That was a weak point on the ex1200 I had (before I lost my temper and replaced it with an eheim 2224)

The only seal I could see was the lid seal, I checked cleaned and vaselined it a few times before I decided to take the top apart, I then ran the pump overnight with just 2 clips holding the lied in place (as the other 2 clip onto the top cover I removed) and It hasn't leaked a drop into the bucket it is currently sat in.

So when I get home the job is to reassemble the top and try to stop it leaking with it fully assembled.

the 2-way valve you mention what is that ? do you mean the inlet/outlets ?

Vaseline destroys seals.. you need silicone based lubricant. Better yet buy some new o-rings. Better than destroying your carpet.

Yes, sorry the in out valve. depending on the age there will be two o rings at the bottom of each. Possibly one inside, but I can't remember. There's plenty of info about by people who have had similar leaks.

If Vaseline is bad for the seals, it seems odd that tetra would suggest using it in their maintenance instructions. I'm pretty sure my eheim manual does too. I assumed their seals where petroleum resistant.

But a aquatic safe silicon grease would probably be better.

If it says so in the manual then it's probably OK. Just got to be careful the seals haven't been replaced with anything else as petroleum does have a thing for destroying seals.

Silicon based is best all around and if it saves your carpet being ruined then it's probably worth it.

I'll check these later then. There was a small amount of water around them this morning though so this could be a possibility.

Interestingly enough the seller included a spare set of inlet/outlets with the filter, the ones that came fitted have a single O-ring seal and the spares have 2 O-rings on them..

I lost one of my Blue Gourami's last night. Right out of the blue.. No signs of disease and the other seems fine, everything seems in order. ph, nitrates etc.. Very odd.

The twin o ring model is the newer one I'd suggest using that. Tetra sent them out as a fix due to the single ring version being the cause of a lot of leaks.

Put the top back together tonight and test fitted the twin o-ring version, it just didn't feel as secure so I stuck with the existing one. I can soon change it if it becomes a problem though.

No leaks so far, so fingers crossed that whatever I did has sorted it :)

Horrible thing to have happen, not just for the loss of a fish but also the worry, I know the feeling!

Tests are ok to a point, but the tank itself is your biggest indicator. If all the other inhabitants are fine (notably fish of the same type) then I'd just keep a careful eye and you should be fine.

When you say "lost", what happened?
