Your favourite gpu, ever? Blast from the past..

Favourite card would probably be my old ATi 9800se that could be soft modded to 9800 pro as it lasted me so well and performed excellently.

One that will always stick in my memory would have to be my Leadtek Ti4600 (twin fan with heatsink that covered the entire card, front and back) as it was the biggest PC purchase I had made to go into my Uni PC.

I had the 9800se and modded it, performed really well. :)

Really?!

I also bought a GF4 Ti4600 on release, and it was the "worst" card I've owned in over 15 years as far as longevity is concerned. Just a few months later the ATI 9700pro was released, and it absolutely wiped the floor with my shiny new GPU!

I really got good use from that card and never a problem with it, I went from a Hercules GF2mx to that and it served me well. I only got rid of it when it was unable to run BF2. Different strokes I suppose.

8800gtx. It just redefined single card performance, blisteringly fast at the time. Followed by the unlocked 128bit 9500non-pro and the unlocked x800gto2 for their sheer bang-for-buck.

Matrox Mystique was the first graphics card I had to save up to buy. Still got the thing, tucked away in a drawer. Nice card at the time - what 15 years ago ;)

Riva 128 (stb velocity 8mb) 15 years ago.
My first proper 3d card -remember being blown away loading up Quake in gl mode and marvelling at the graphics.
Since then always owned nvidia cards so it must have left a lasting impression.

9800 Pro, 6800 GT, 8800GT and GTX 470 have all stood out so far.

If I had to pick one it would be the 6800 GT.
I remember getting the conductive pen from halfords & joining the 2 points on the circuit board to volt mod it, then flashing it with the ultra bios so it was like having a 6800 Ultra for half the price :)

  1. 3Dfx Voodoo 1 (just changed the way I looked at games)
  2. nVidia 8800GT (lasted so long was insane)
  3. ATi 6990 (because it's insane and shouldn't have been made lol)
